"Mattison's Independence" is a Side Adventure in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

At the Hudson Construction headquarters in Tarrey Town, Link can find Hudson and Rhondson discussing Mattison's upcoming move.[2] Although Mattison has been acting cheerful, Hudson is worried that she is only pretending to be brave about leaving soon.[3] Rhondson claims that he is making the journey more difficult for Mattison, and she tells him that they should be supporting her.[4] Hudson agrees, revealing that he wants to do something big for Mattison before she leaves.[5]

Rhondson notices Link nearby, welcoming him and asking if he is in search of a dream home.[6] However, she claims that Hudson Construction is not yet ready to open for business.[7] The pair then recognize Link, and Hudson reveals that Tarrey Town has been thriving due to his help.[8] He also informs him that they have a daughter, Mattison, which causes him to become emotional.[9] Rhondson tells Hudson to put himself together.[10] He apologizes and decides to head back to work, though he promises to think of something to do for Mattison.[11] Following this conversation, "Mattison's Independence" will begin.

When Link speaks to Hudson again, he apologizes that he and Rhondson were unable to make time for him.[12] He laments how indecisive he is about Mattison, which contradicts Hudson Construction's motto of "It's son and done."[13] When Link asks about her, Hudson reveals that she will have to move to Gerudo Town soon, since it is Gerudo law that their children cannot associate with men until they grow up.[14] Once a Gerudo child starts becoming aware of the world, an escort from Gerudo Town comes to take them.[15] Despite it being considered an honor among the Gerudo to spend time in Gerudo Town, Hudson is having a hard time letting Mattison go.[16] Since he and Rhondson are so busy, he wishes someone would spend time with Mattison before she leaves.[17]

Mattison can be found in the Room on the Second Floor above the Hudson Construction headquarters, where she is using her Notebook to study the Gerudo language.[18] When Link asks her about it, Mattison is surprised, believing her escort has arrived.[19] She explains that since she is moving to Gerudo Town soon, she is memorizing as many Gerudo words as she can to teach to the residents of Tarrey Town.[20] She offers to teach Link as well, inviting him to join in on a Gerudo Quiz she is giving Monari.[21]

Mattison with Monari

Mattison meets with Monari in front of the Goddess Statue and the Unity Bell in the center of Tarrey Town. She greets Monari, who asks if they are having another lesson.[22] Mattison confirms this, revealing that Link is joining their class as a new student.[23] For the first question in the Gerudo Quiz, Mattison asks what the Gerudo word for "grandmother" is.[24] Monari struggles to find the answer,[25] but Link is able to give the correct answer, "vaba".[26] Monari is pleased that there is someone else who is knowledgeable about Gerudo, since she has learned a lot from Mattison's lessons.[27] Mattison hopes that by teaching Gerudo to the residents of Tarrey Town, Rhondson will feel less lonely when she leaves.[28] Next, Mattison wants to help Hudson, so she decides to ride the Railcar help him at the Hudson Construction Site.[29] As Mattison runs off, Monari shares her belief that Mattison is too young to be worried about her parents' happiness.[30] However, she does not think that she will be able to make it to the Railcar due to how strict Hagie has become about it.[31]

At the Railcar station, Mattison appears despondent, and she reveals that Hagie will not let her ride unless she pays him.[32] She wants to get onto the Railcar without him noticing, but she needs someone to block his view for her.[33] Using Ultrahand, Link can place an Object in front of Hagie to prevent him from seeing Mattison. Alternatively, he can also throw a Puffshroom at Hagie. Afterwards, he can tell Mattison it is safe to go, and she decides to trust him and run for the Railcar.[34] When she reaches it, she celebrates and thanks Link for his help, before she departs for the Hudson Construction Site.[35]

When Link arrives at the Hudson Construction Site, Link can find Hudson and Mattison inspecting a Hot-Air Balloon outside of the Workshop. Mattison is pleased to see Link, and she notes that Hudson has been mumbling to himself.[36] Turning to Link, Hudson reveals that he decided to make a Hot-Air Balloon to help Mattison reach Gerudo Town.[37] However, he is unsure of how to make it special for her.[38] Mattison claims that she already loves the Hot-Air Balloon, comparing it to the sun.[39] The inspires Hudson to color the Balloon's fabric yellow, but he needs 10 Sundelions in order to do so.[40] Mattison offers to help search for them, but Hudson informs her that they are too rare.[41] Mattison claims she saw one attached to a Fallen Ruin from the Sky before, which intrigues Hudson.[42]

After Link has gathered 10 Sundelions, he can return to the Hudson Construction Site to give them to Hudson. He and Mattison are shocked to receive them, and they celebrate him for doing so.[43] However, Mattison is disappointed that she was unable to help Hudson find them.[44] Attempting to assure her, Hudson asks if she wants to help him dye the Balloon.[45] Mattison agrees,[46] and the two sing the Hudson Construction theme song as they work through the night.[47]

In the morning, Hudson declares that the Sun Balloon is complete.[48] Looking toward Mattison resting nearby, Hudson comments on how happy he is to watch her.[49] Rhondson then arrives at the Hudson Construction Site, and Hudson realizes that Mattison's escort has arrived.[50] Hudson decides that they should ride back to the entrance of Tarrey Town using the Sun Balloon, and he invites Link to fly back with them.[51]

Floating in the Sun Balloon, Mattison states that she feels like a Bird.[52] Rhondson tells her to calm down, concerned that she will fall out.[53] Hudson directs everyone's attention to the sunrise, which intrigues Mattison.[54] Rhondson calls the sunrise a blessing for Mattison's journey, and she claims that no matter where they are, they will always be under the same sun.[55] As a result, she says that she will always be with her daughter.[56] Hudson then warns everyone to hold on, as they will be landing soon.[57]

After they land, the residents of Tarrey Town gather to see Mattison off. Mattison expresses her gratitude to Hudson for making the {{Term}|TotK|Sun Balloon}}.[58] Hudson starts to tell Mattison she can come home if she ever gets lonely, but he decides to be strong instead.[59] A Gerudo Soldier then walks up to the group, and Hudson asserts it is now time for her to leave.[60] Monari promises to look after Hudson and Rhondson for her, and she is looking forward to hearing her stories when she grows up.[61] Hunnie promises to come visit Mattison and play with her.[62] Mattison thanks them, vowing to become a wonderful woman like her mother and meet a nice man like her father.[63] She then waves goodbye to the residents of Tarrey Town, and she and the Gerudo Soldier leave together.[64]

Now that Mattison is gone, Hudson asks Rhondson if he was able to keep smiling.[65] Rhondson assures him that he did great, stating it would have been bad if they cried when Mattison did not.[66] She encourages Hudson that, if he is ready, they need to pull themselves together and start a new phase of their life.[67] Hudson agrees, and he is able to compose himself.[68] He apologizes to Link and thanks him for his help.[69] As a reward for the Sundelions, he gives Link a Silver Rupee.[70] Rhondson then gives him another Silver Rupee.[71] Should Link ever visit Gerudo Town, Hudson asks him to check on Mattison, though Rhondson reminds him that men are not allowed inside.[72] The two of them then return to their work,[73] and "Mattison's Independence" will be completed.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 Hudson and Rhondson of Hudson Construction were discussing the pending departure of someone named Mattison. Rhondson seemed upbeat about it, but Hudson looked sad.

He appears to be worried about something.
2 It seems Hudson's only daughter, Mattison, is moving to Gerudo Town on her own in accordance with Gerudo law.

Both Hudson and Rhondson regret that they are too busy to play with Mattison, especially since it won't be long before she leaves.
3 Hudson and Rhondson's daughter, Mattison, is studying the Gerudo language in preparation for her move.

She's going to find Granny Monari, and said something about giving her a quiz...
4 Mattison has been teaching the Gerudo language to the people of Tarrey Town so that her mother, Rhondson, won't feel so lonely.

Now she's headed toward the railcar. She wants to help her father, Hudson, who's been very busy with work.
5 Mattison wants to go to the job site to help Hudson with his work—but Hagie, who's in charge of the railcar that extends to the site, is charging a toll.

Mattison doesn't have any money and is, instead, trying to figure out a way to obscure Hagie's line of sight.
6 Mattison managed to evade Hagie and ride the railcar. Was she able to meet up with Hudson at the worksite?
7 Hudson is trying to make a balloon for Mattison to help his daughter's departure feel like a grand celebration.

He needs 10 sundelions so he can dye it yellow—Mattison's favorite color.
Complete Along with Rhondson, Hudson, and the people of Tarrey Town, you saw Mattison off on her journey to Gerudo Town.

If you go to Gerudo Town, perhaps you can see Mattison again.

  32. "I want to ride the railcar so I can get to Papa's construct-son site and help him get his work done. But I forgot that guy won't give me permiss-son to ride unless I pay him. I never had to pay until he took over." — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. "Guess I'm gonna have to hop aboard the railcar without him noticing. But how am I gonna do that all my myself? What I need is for someone to maybe cover his eyes or something." — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. "[You can go now!] Huh?! Mister, did YOU do that? I'm kinda nervous about it, but...I trust you. I'll run straight there!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. "I did it! My miss-son was a success! Yay! I can finally get to Papa. OK, I'm off! He's gonna be so happy to see me! Thanks for helping me with my miss-son!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. "Hey! You didn't ment-son you were coming here too, mister! It's strange... Papa keeps mumbling to himself, "hmm, hmm, hmmm."" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. "Oh, it's you. So, you know, I've been doing a lot of thinking... Trying to figure out what I could possibly do for Mattison. And, well, what I came up with is this. Gerudo Town is pretty far from here, and there are plenty of monsters along the way. So, I thought I'd make Mattison her own special air balloon!" — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. "But...I want to make it really special. Something just for her. I'm just...not sure how to do that." — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. "Special or not, I love the balloon you made, Papa. It looks like the sun!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. "The sun... That's it! Let's color it yellow like the sun. I've seen sundelions around here. I could use them to make a dye. Bet I'd get a beautiful shade of yellow from them. But for me to dye something this size, I'd need 10 of them." — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. "You need sundelions, Papa? Those are the bright yellow flowers, right? I'll make finding them my new miss-son!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
"I appreciate the thought, but it's much too difficult. Sundelions are quite rare. I'm not even sure where you'd find them." — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. "Don't worry! I've seen a sundelion before. It was attached to the ruins that fell from the sky." — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
"The sky, huh?" — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  43. "[Here's 10 sundelions.] Huh?! That's awesome! You did it! You really and truly collected 1o of them!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
"What's this? You found them all for us? Looks like I'll have no problem dyeing the balloon the color of the sun." — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  44. "Awww, I wasn't any help at all. I failed my miss-son." — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  45. "That's not true, Mattison. Your papa is about to turn this balloon into the sun, isn't he? I know, why don't you help me with that?" — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  46. "I will! I will, Papa! I'll help you make the sun!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  47. "♪Quick and quality, blink and we're done!♪" — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)

"Yes. Her escort has arrived and is waiting at the village entrance." — Rhondson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  51. "Let's all go together, then. In Mattison's special sun balloon! Would you join us as well?" — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  52. "Wooow! I feel like I've turned into a bird!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  53. "Oh, Mattison, don't make such a ruckus. You do not want to fall from this height." — Rhondson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  54. "Hey, everyone. Take a look at that." — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)
"The sun is waking up!" — Mattison (Tears of the Kingdom)
  55. "It's blessing the start of your journey, Mattison. Whether you're in Gerudo Town or Tarrey Town, never forget that we are all standing beneath the very same sun." — Rhondson (Tears of the Kingdom)
  56. "The only distance that matters is the distance between our hearts. So you see, your mama will always be beside you." — Rhondson (Tears of the Kingdom)

  67. "Now, this is the start of a new life for us too. Let's pull ourselves together...if you're ready?" — Rhondson (Tears of the Kingdom)
