The Baneful Zone is a Level in Tri Force Heroes.[1] It is the eighth and final Level of the Den of Trials, and is preceded by the Shadow Zone.

Features and Overview

The Baneful Zone comprises Floors B36 to B40 of the Den of Trials. Rather than being based on the scenery and Enemies of a particular Area of the Drablands, the Baneful Zone is a dreary place with dark, swirling clouds and crumbling ground, where all of the Enemies are the "dark" variants which deal twice as much damage and curse the Links on contact. It is initially unlocked and accessed by completing the prior Shadow Zone; if all three Links have already unlocked the Baneful Zone, they can access it directly by standing on the final Triforce Gateway in the Den's hub Level.

Each Floor of the Baneful Zone is octagonal stone platform with no walls around its edges. Floor B36 has a large, X-shaped divide that breaks the stage into four sections; the Links begin on the southern section where they can select any of the eight Items, while on each of the other sections are three of a different type of Enemy. A dark Keeleon also hovers around the northern section, and several Cuccos in each section allow the Links to glide across the gaps between them. Once all of the Enemies are defeated, a Triforce Gateway appears in the northern section.

Floor B37 is affected by strong winds that continually push the Links to the south. Toward the north edge is a Shock Switch which temporarily raises a wall along that edge when it is struck, blocking the winds from that part of the stage, though the Links will need to fight past several Enemies riding on dark Totem Armos to reach it. Near the northeast and northwest corners are two small towers, from which the Hinoxes throw their dark fireballs at the Links. The trio can reach and attack these Enemies by forming a full Totem; however, striking the Hinoxes from the south will knock them off the towers, allowing them to freely chase the Links around the stage. By taking advantage of a railing on each of the towers, the Links are able to keep the Hinoxes trapped by attacking them from the north. Once all of the Enemies are defeated, the Triforce Gateway appears, and the northern wall is permanently raised.

Floor B38 is a wide-open stage with no traps or obstacles, but two waves of dangerous Enemies; first, a pair of dark Wizzrobes which float at different heights, as well as a dark Sky Fire Chain Soldier, followed by two dark Super Aeralfos. The Links should attempt to avoid their simultaneous diving attacks, then approach them to strike from the rear after they swing their blades or begin breathing flames. Once the Enemies are all defeated, a Squiddy and a Treasure Chest appear along with the Triforce Gateway, allowing the heroes to replenish their Hearts and gain an extra Fairy before battling the final Bosses of the Den of Trials on Floor B39: a triumvirate of Shadow Links who carry a randomized selection of powered-up Items.

Floor B40 is the final treasure room at the bottom of the Den of Trials. Covered in lush grass and colorful flowers, in contrast to the other Floors of the Baneful Zone, three large Treasure Chests await the Links; two of the Chests contain the same random, bronze-rarity Material from the Sky Realm (Cucco Feathers, Carmine Pearls or Sky Dragon Tails) and the other contains a random, silver-rarity Material (Pretty Plume, Mock Fairy or Aurora Stone). However, if the entire Den of Trials is completed in a single session, starting from the Forest Zone, there will instead be eight large Treasure Chests, each containing a gold-rarity Material from a different Area of the Drablands (Mystery Jade, Rainbow Coral, Star Fragment, Ice Rose, Vibrant Brooch, Crystal Skull, Sanctuary Mask and Steel Mask). If any of the Links have completed the Den of Trials for the first time, they will also find the powerful Fierce Deity Armor at the bottom of the Chest.[2][3]

Trivia

  • The music that plays during the battle against the Shadow Links is an arranged version of the Link's Shadow battle theme from The Adventure of Link. The fanfare heard when they are all defeated, as well as the calm "ending" music heard afterward, are also arrangements of songs from that game.
