Fairy Islands are heart-shaped landmarks on the Great Sea in The Wind Waker.[1] They are the residences of the five different Great Fairies. While these islands may look alike, the method used to enter the Great Fairy Fountain is different for each, as is the equipment upgrade that Link receives as a gift for visiting each Great Fairy.

Overview

Northern Fairy Island

Main article: Northern Fairy Island

Northern Fairy Island is located on quadrant A3 of the Great Sea. Unlike the other Fairy Islands, the entrance to the shell is not blocked by any obstacle. The Great Fairy within will upgrade the holding capacity of Link's Rupee Wallet to either 1000 Rupees or 5000 Rupees, depending whether or not he has received the wallet upgrade in Outset Island.

Western Fairy Island

Main article: Western Fairy Island

Western Fairy Island is located in quadrant C1 of the Great Sea. The entrance to a shell on the island is blocked by a ring of fire, though by hitting a plunger with the Skull Hammer, the fire will recede, allowing Link to enter and receive a Quiver upgrade from the Great Fairy within.

Eastern Fairy Island

Main article: Eastern Fairy Island

Eastern Fairy Island is located in quadrant C5 of the Great Sea. The entrance to the fairy shell on the island is blocked by a giant boulder, so bombs or Power Bracelets are necessary to get inside. The Great Fairy that resides within will grant Link an upgrade to his Bomb Bag. Interestingly, despite its name, the island is actually in a portion of the Great Sea's northeastern region.

This island is home to a rare Blue ChuChu, and it's also where the Korok Olivio and one of the withered trees can be found.

Southern Fairy Island

Main article: Southern Fairy Island

Southern Fairy Island is located in quadrant F4 of the Great Sea. The entrance to a shell on the island is blocked, but by using a Fire Arrow or bomb, Link can open the entrance and enter to receive an upgrade to his Bomb Bag from the Great Fairy within. This is the only fairy island Link can warp directly to with the Ballad of Gales melody.

Once Link has bought the Treasure Chart from the expensive Beedle Shop, Link can retrieve a Piece of Heart from the bottom of the sea with the help of the Grappling Hook. Also, after every ship and wall-mounted cannon have been destroyed in every reef, a treasure chest will appear in this island containing Treasure Chart #40.

Thorned Fairy Island

Main article: Thorned Fairy Island

Thorned Fairy Island is located in quadrant D7 of the Great Sea. The entrance to the fairy shell is blocked by vines that will only disappear by hitting the three switches with the Skull Hammer. Once inside, Link can receive a Quiver upgrade from the Great Fairy.

A Piece of Heart can be pulled from the bottom of the sea once Link finds and opens a Treasure Chart from the Wind Temple.
