Red Darknuts,(TLoZ | OoS | OoA | TMC | TP | TPHD)[1][2] also known as Red Dark Nuts,(TMC)[3] are recurring enemies and Sub-Bosses in The Legend of Zelda series.[note 1] Red Darknuts go unnamed in The Wind Waker.

Characteristics

The Legend of Zelda

Red Darknuts are weaker than Blue Darknuts in The Legend of Zelda. They are able to shield themselves from any attack and are thus invulnerable if attacked from the front.[6] Link can harm them by attacking them from the side or behind with either his Sword or a Bomb. Red Darknuts cannot be stunned by the Boomerang and they cannot be harmed by the Magical Rod, Arrows, or Fire. They have a health of four. When defeated, Red Darknuts may drop either a Heart, one Rupee, four Bombs, or a Clock.[note 2]

Oracle of Seasons

Red Darknuts appear in Oracle of Seasons with a similar appearance and behavior to Darknuts from Link's Awakening, attacking by throwing spears or charging at Link with their sword.

Oracle of Ages

Red Darknuts appear in Oracle of Ages with a similar appearance and behavior to Darknuts from Link's Awakening, attacking by throwing spears or charging at Link with their sword.

The Wind Waker

The Red Darknut found in Ganon's Tower from The Wind Waker

Red Darknuts are Darknuts that wear crimson-colored armor but otherwise behave identically to basic Darknuts. A Red Darknut without a Shield appears at Hyrule Castle along the road to Ganon's Castle. A second Red Darknut with a Shield appears on the stairs leading to Puppet Ganon's room in Ganon's Castle. Crimson-armored Mighty Darknuts also appear atop the stairs to Puppet Ganon's room.

Red Darknuts share Figurines with Darknuts and Golden Darknuts. When presented with a Pictograph of a Red Darknut without a Shield, Carlov will make a Figurine of a basic Darknut. However, Carlov will instead create a Figurine featuring a Golden Darknut when presented with a Pictograph of a Red Darknut that bears a Shield. Despite the latter's description, Red Darknuts cannot be found in the Earth Temple.

The Minish Cap

Red Darknuts are commander-rank Darknuts who possess greater strength and endurance than the standard variant in The Minish Cap,[3] though they have the same attack patterns. A Red Darknut appears as the Sub-Boss of the Palace of Winds. Two Red Darknuts later appear as enemies in Dark Hyrule Castle after Link defeats the Black Knight.

Twilight Princess

Red Darknuts are fought the same way as regular Darknuts. They are found in the Cave of Ordeals's 48th and 49th floors, alongside 2 Aeralfos in the former and 1 Darknut and a Green Darknut in the latter.

Other Appearances

Cadence of Hyrule

Red Darknuts appear as Minibosses in Cadence of Hyrule where they are the second strongest variety of Darknut. Although their movement is limited to the beat of the music, they can move on every single beat, rendering them faster than most enemies and Minibosses. They also carry a shield that protects them from frontal attacks and can push the heroes backwards as they move, making them dangerous in areas where they can pin the heroes against walls or push them into holes and other hazards. Every few beats, they will lower their shield which will temporarily expose them to attack. When their shield is down, they will only swing their sword if the hero is either standing still or tries to run to their sides.

When the opportunity to strike the heroes arises, they will hold out their sword for one beat and 5 warning tiles will flash in a horseshoe formation before they swing their sword on the second beat, dealing damage to anything within 3 spaces in front of them and anything that was already standing at their sides.

Equipping the Ring of Piercing, the Great Bow, or Fragarach will enable the heroes to attack them through their shields.

Notes

  1. Red Darknuts were referred to as Red Knights and Soldiers in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages—Official Strategy Guide by BradyGames.[4][5] However, as these contradict the name given in Encyclopedia, they are not considered Canon.
  2. If Link defeats 10 enemies without getting hit or teleporting with the Flute, then the 10th enemy defeated will drop five Rupees. However, if the 10th enemy is defeated with a Bomb, then it will drop four Bombs. If Link defeats 16 enemies without getting hit or teleporting, then the 16th enemy will drop a Fairy. After the 16th enemy, Link must get hit and reset the counter to zero in order to achieve this effect again. Defeating Armos, Like Likes, Keese, or Gels will not be counted.[7]
