amiibo is a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.(BotWBreath of the Wild | TotKTears of the Kingdom)[1][2]

Overview

amiibo is primarily used by Link in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom to summon Items into the world when an amiibo is scanned.[3][4] The items summoned can range from useful Materials to Treasure Chests containing rare Equipment and Armor. Some amiibo can also be used to summon Epona or Wolf Link.

In order to use this ability, it must first be enabled in the options menu,[5] and Link must have progressed far enough in his adventure.[6][7] Upon activation, a cursor will appear a short distance in front of Link, which can be moved to aim where the amiibo's effects will generate. At certain locations, the ability will be deactivated, such as when the landing point is obstructed by something above, in certain locations, or special scenarios. Most amiibo figures can only be scanned once per day.[3][8][5][9]

Breath of the Wild

In Breath of the Wild, the amiibo ability takes the form of a Rune for the Sheikah Slate.[10] It is unlocked for use after Link has completed one Ancient Shrine on the Great Plateau, provided that the option has been enabled. It cannot used inside Ancient Shrines, during the Eventide Island trial, or inside the Sword Monk's Shrine.[11]

Any time that a Super Smash Bros. series Link amiibo figure or The Legend of Zelda series Link (Twilight Princess) amiibo figure is scanned for the first time on a save file, it will summon Epona without any other item drops, provided that the Rune was not used in an area where Horses are disallowed, in which case the Rune will summon items normally.

The The Legend of Zelda series Wolf Link amiibo will summon Wolf Link to serve as a traveling companion for Link, however he cannot be summoned inside towns or Dungeons, and will disappear if Link enters either.[12] If the amiibo is scanned inside one of these areas, it will not have any effect.[citation needed]

Drop Table Logic

Most Zelda-related amiibo will summon random Materials or other items, as well as Treasure Chest, which will sometimes contain amiibo-exclusive items. Some amiibo can also drop Wooden Boxes, Barrels, or other containers, which can drop Arrows or Materials when destroyed.

The common items (Normal) are guaranteed to spawn when an amiibo is scanned, although is there is a range set for the amount of common items, there is an equal chance for each amount with that range to be spawn. The rare items (SmallHit) each only have a 20% chance to spawn at all. For the Treasure Chest, there is an 80% chance for the item inside of the Treasure Chest to be a BigHit, and 20% chance for it to be a GreatHit item instead.[13]

If an amiibo scan has resulted in four consecutive BitHits from the same figure (regardless of any other amiibo figures being scanned in between), then the fifth consecutive scan of that figure is guaranteed to result in a GreatHit item.[13]

There are three main stages of progression which can affect the available items from Treasure Chest from an amiibo. At the start of Breath of the Wild, the Normal table is used, and once Link obtains the Paraglider, the Parasail table is used. After at least one Divine Beast is freed, the Remain table is used for the remainder of the game.[13]

There are also some special conditions that affect what can drop:[14]

  • For Armor sets from amiibo, any Armor pieces Link has already obtained cannot be spawned again until the full set has been acquired.
  • Link cannot receive the Traveler's Bridle and Traveler's Saddle again after obtaining them.
  • Ancient Arrows cannot be obtained through amiibo until they have been obtained elsewhere first.
  • If a GreatHit Treasure Chest is obtained from scanning any of the Champion amiibo figures, then the corresponding Divine Helm is guaranteed to spawn as long as at least one Divine Beast has been freed and Link has not already obtained that Divine Helm.

Weapon Bonuses

Main article: Weapon Bonus

Weapons obtained through amiibo are guaranteed to have Weapon Bonus modifiers. Unlike Weapons from normal Treasure Chests, whose modifier values are random within a specific range depending on the item, amiibo chests will always have the maximum value for their applicable modifier tier (white or yellow). However, the text will display as white regardless of which tier is actually received. Additionally, due to a bug, Shields obtained from amiibo chests which are meant to have the white Shield Guard Up bonus will apply that value to the durability and correctly display it as a Durability Up bonus. This means that Shields from amiibo cannot receive Shield Guard Up, and have two possible values for Durability Up. This does not apply to the second-tier Shield Guard Up+ bonus, though as mentioned this will display as white bonus.

amiibo Drop Tables in Breath of the Wild

Tears of the Kingdom

In Tears of the Kingdom, the amiibo ability appears as an Ancient Power, and is automatically available after completing a single Shrine of Light on the Great Sky Island, while the option to use amiibo is enabled in the settings menu. amiibo is disabled inside Shrines of Light and Dungeons.[15]

Similar to Breath of the Wild, when a Super Smash Bros. series Link amiibo figure or The Legend of Zelda series Link (Twilight Princess) amiibo figure is scanned for the first time on a playthrough, it will summon Epona with no other items, as long as it is outside of an area where Horses are not allowed, such as the Sky or Depths.

Drop Table Logic

When scanned, most Zelda-related amiibo will summon various items, usually Materials, in addition to a Treasure Chest. Some amiibo can also spawn Wooden Boxes, Barrels, or other containers, which can be destroyed to obtain Materials or Arrows.

When scanned, each amiibo will spawn a certain amount of Normal items, based on a set range. If the range is set to 8, then 8 items will spawn, and if it is set to 3-4, then there is an equal chance for either 3 items or 4 items to spawn. The SmallHit items work in a similar way, however each item only has a 20% chance to be spawned at all. The item obtained from the Treasure Chest has an 80% chance to be a BigHit item, and a 20% chance to be a GreatHit item instead.[16]

If a single amiibo figure has spawned a BigHit item four times in a row, then the next time that figure is scanned will result in a GreatHit item.[16]

Certain items from amiibo are not available until after the Great Sky Island has been completed, and others are not available until Link has visited the Depths for the first time. Paraglider Fabrics are the only items (aside from Epona as a mount) which are amiibo-exclusive in Tears of the Kingdom. Once a Fabric has been obtained from an amiibo, it cannot be obtained again, and the rest of the drop chances in its table will be scaled to compensate.[16]

Unlike in Breath of the Wild, Weapons obtained from amiibo chests in Tears of the Kingdom will never have Weapon Bonuses.
