In {{OoT}}, the {{Term|OoT3D|Big Octo}} had made its home {{Term|OoT3D|Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly|link}}, where it is the {{Term|OoT3D|Sub-Boss|link}} of that {{Term|OoT3D|Dungeon|link}}. When {{Term|OoT3D|Link|link}} arrives at its lair, he throws {{Term|OoT3D|Princess Ruto|link}} up on top of a platform to get the {{Term|OoT3D|Zora's Sapphire|link}}. Upon grabbing it, however, {{Term|OoT3D|Princess Ruto}} is taken up to the next room by the platform. The platform then sinks, revealing the {{Term|OoT3D|Big Octo}} in its entirety.<ref>{{Cite|Keeeyaaaah! What is this?! An octopus?!|Princess Ruto|OoT3D}}</ref>

The {{Term|OoT3D|Big Octo}} circles around the spinning platform and chases after {{Term|OoT3D|Link}}. {{Term|OoT3D|Link}} in effect, must do the same thing- circle around until he reaches the {{Term|OoT3D|Big Octo}}. The {{Term|OoT3D|Big Octo}} is susceptible to the {{Term|OoT3D|Boomerang|link}}, which when hit by it, stuns it and forces it to turn around. Its only weak spot is on its back, which is only revealed once it is stunned. {{Term|OoT3D|Link}} must run around the circle and try to hit its back before it starts to run again.

In {{MM}}, {{Plural|MM3D|Big Octo}} appear in the {{Term|MM3D|Southern Swamp|link}}, blocking the way to the {{Term|MM3D|Deku Palace|link}} and the {{Term|MM3D|Deku Shrine|link}}. They attack {{Term|MM3D|Link}} by sucking him in and spitting him out if he gets too close. They can be defeated by ramming into them with the boat on the {{Term|MM3D|Boat Cruise}}, thus opening the way to the {{Term|MM3D|Deku Palace}}. They can also be killed with the {{Term|MM3D|Bow|link}} once {{Term|MM3D|Link}} retrieves it from the {{Term|MM3D|Woodfall Temple}}. Upon completion of the {{Term|MM3D|Woodfall Temple|link}}, they disappear from the swamp.

In {{TWW}}, {{Plural|TWWHD|Big Octo}} are large, squid-like creatures that inhabit the waters of the {{Term|TWWHD|Great Sea|link}}, and will appear if {{Term|TWWHD|Link}} sails nearby. A total of 6 {{Plural|TWWHD|Big Octo}} can be found in the {{Term|TWWHD|Great Sea}}, one has 4 eyes, three have 8 eyes, and two have 12 eyes. To defeat one, {{Term|TWW|Link}} must shoot and destroy all of its eyes with a projectile, either with the {{Term|TWWHD|Bow|link}}, the {{Term|TWWHD|Boomerang|link}} or with {{Plural|TWWHD|Bomb|link}}.

The {{Plural|TWWHD|Big Octo}} cannot be seen until it rises out of the water, but there is always a large flock of {{Plural|TWWHD|Seagull|link}} circling above them.<ref>{{Cite|If you see seagulls flying all around some sea water, that's a sign that you need to be wary, fry. If all of its eyes are not destroyed before reaching the center of the whirlpool, the {{Term|TWWHD|Big Octo}} sucks {{Term|TWWHD|Link}} up and spits him out, sending him out to the edge of the quadrant. However, if {{Term|TWWHD|Link}} manages to defeat the {{Term|TWWHD|Big Octo}} before he is sucked in, the {{Term|TWWHD|Big Octo}} will leave behind a reward.

Their appearance is an 8-bit representation based on their appearance from {{TWW|-}}. On Map squares with a {{Term|HWDE|Big Octo}}, a {{Term|HWDE|Great Sea Rule|link}} is applied to the {{Term|HWDE|Battle|link}} that causes all damage to the {{Term|HWDE|Warrior|link}} to become devastating, reducing them to one quarter of a {{Term|HWDE|Heart|link}}.
