"Destroy Ganondorf" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

When Link speaks to Purah after completing "Crisis at Hyrule Castle", "Find the Fifth Sage", and "Recovering the Hero's Sword", she comments how useful it is that the Mineru is helping him and the other Sages fight Demon King Ganondorf.[2] After hearing that Link has found the Master Sword, she is shocked to hear that it was on the head of the Light Dragon.[3] She thanks Link for finding it, reminding him that Zelda sacrificed herself so that it could be restored.[4] She remarks that without the Master Sword, Link does not look like himself.[5]

Since Link is ready to face Demon King Ganondorf, Purah declares that they must figure out his location.[6] She discerns that he must be somewhere in the Depths, as Hyrule Castle and anywhere else on the Surface seem unlikely.[7] For more information, she suggests that he speak to Josha, who has been leading Chasm Research.[8] She informs Link that she is relying on him.[9] At this point, the "Destroy Ganondorf" Main Quest will begin.

When Link faces Master Kohga at the Abandoned Hebra Mine during the "Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan" Side Adventure, he reveals that he serves Demon King Ganondorf, who is dwelling in the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle.[10] This portion of the Central Hyrule Depths is only accessible through the Hyrule Castle Chasm. While traversing Gloom's Approach, the Sage Avatars and Mineru's Construct will disappear.[11]

Link and the Sages

After passing through Gloom's Approach, the Forgotten Foundation, the Imprisoning Chamber, and Gloom's Lair, Link will find himself at Gloom's Origin. There, the first wave of the Demon King's Army will appear as part of the War in the Depths of Hyrule, which consists of several Gloom-Wreathed Bokoblins and Boss Bokoblins that charge towards him. However, they are deterred by a single Arrow shot towards them. Tulin tells Link that he does not need to fight alone as he and the other Sages arrive.[12] He activates his Secret Stone and continues, saying that they are unstoppable when they fight together.[13] Yunobo's Secret Stone activates as well, and he claims he will make his ancestors proud by fighting with Link.[14] Sidon activates his own Secret Stone, promising to protect Hyrule alongside Link.[15] Riju's Secret Stone is also activated, revealing that since the Gerudo owe him, she is here to help him as well.[16] Lastly, Mineru activates her Secret Stone of Spirit, vowing to atone for her past failure during the Imprisoning War by defeating Demon King Ganondorf now.[17] All five Sages gather behind Link, drawing their Weapons.[note 1]

As Link and the Sages fight the Demon King's Army, waves consists of Gloom-Wreathed Lizalfos, Gibdos, and Moblins will appear in succession. Once all four waves have been defeated, the wall of Gloom will dissipate, and Sidon reasons that Demon King Ganondorf must be there.[18] However, they are interrupted by a gathering of Gloom behind them, which revives Colgera, Marbled Gohma, Mucktorok, Queen Gibdo, and the Seized Construct. Riju declares that the Bosses are not enough to stop them,[19] and the Sages rush to face them. Sidon tells Link that it is their fate to fight the Bosses and that he should not worry.[20] Yunobo assures Link that they will handle them, before taunting Marbled Gohma with the power of a Sage.[21] Tulin claims they will be fine, since they have already defeated these Bosses before.[22] As she prepares to face the Seized Construct, Mineru informs Link that the rest is up to him.[23] Several Boulders fall in front of Link, forcing him to continue on toward Demon King Ganondorf.[note 2]

Demon King Ganondorf's introduction

Further within Gloom's Origin, Link will find Demon King Ganondorf sitting atop of a pillar of Gloom. He is disappointed that he has yet to destroy the world, and he believes that since Link is fighting for peace, he in an unworthy opponent.[24] Using his Secret Stone, he summons a cloud of Gloom, which reverts him to his appearance from before he became the Demon King. He vows to reshape the world and rule over it as king.[25] Jumping down before Link, he tells him that he is witnessing both the revival of a king and the birth of his new world.[26] Link then draws the Master Sword, and the two proceed to battle.[note 3]

After depleting all of Demon King Ganondorf's health, he remarks that he almost forgot what the thrill of battle felt like, and he claims to be far away from his power's limits.[27] Surrounding himself in Gloom once again, he activates his Secret Stone and assumes his form as the Demon King. He tells Link to enjoy his final moments, threatening to take more than his arm.[28] He then continues his fight with Link. During their battle, the Sages return to fight by Link's side, allowing Link access to their abilities once again.[29][30][31][32][33] When half of Demon King Ganondorf's has been depleted, he unleashes a Gloom attack that knocks out the Sages, and he tauntingly beckons Link to face him on his own.

Once Link defeats Demon King Ganondorf, he falls backwards and shouts. He claims that there is still a way for him to rule over the world and that he cannot be stopped by Link.[34] Tearing his Secret Stone from his headpiece, claiming that he is willing to sacrifice himself if it means he can destroy Link and shroud Hyrule in Darkness.[35] Demon King Ganondorf then swallows his Secret Stone, beginning the process of draconification. He is overtake by Gloom, and as beam appears above him, the Demon Dragon begins to take form. He grabs Link in his mouth, and the Sages shout as the two burst through the ceiling.[36]

The Demon Dragon's introduction

The Demon Dragon emerges from beneath Hyrule Castle, still carrying Link in his mouth. Suddenly, the Light Dragon appears, and the Demon Dragon roars as she approaches. This causes Link to fall out of his mouth, though he is caught by the Light Dragon and carried further into the Sky. Link manages to stand as the two Dragons face each other, and he draws the Master Sword yet again.[note 4]

During the battle, the Light Dragon carries Link above the Demon Dragon, allowing him to drop down and attack the weak spots on his back. After Link destroys a weak spot, the Demon Dragon will fling him off, but he is yet again caught by the Light Dragon and carried upwards. After all four weak spots have been destroyed, a Blood Moon will rise, and the Demon Dragon's Secret Stone can be seen on its head. When he lands on the Demon Dragon's head, Link will be able to attack and shatter the Secret Stone, defeating the Demon Dragon.

The Demon Dragon writhes, causing Link to fall off its head and be caught by the Light Dragon one last time. The Light Dragon flies away with Link, and after the Secret Stone finally shatters, the Demon Dragon flies into Sky. Several beams of light appear from his body, before a large beam encompasses him and destroys him. Link and the Light Dragon watch from a distance, and afterwards, "Destroy Ganondorf" will be completed.
