Dharkstare is the Boss of the Ice Ruins in A Link Between Worlds.[citation needed]

Characteristics

Dharkstare guards the Painting of Rosso in the lowest part of the Ice Ruins, on a hexagonal, Ice-covered platform with a hole in the center. It exhibits many similarities with Kholdstare from A Link to the Past, like encasing itself in Ice for protection. However, it is capable of movement, and will float a short distance above the ground.

Dharkstare will attack by trying to ram into Link, and shooting out three orbs of Ice, which will form a triangle around Link; after a few seconds, anything inside the triangle will be frozen and damaged. In this form, its only weakness is the Fire Rod. After three hits, the Ice barrier will melt, and Dharkstare will fall to the ground and flail around wildly, attempting to flee from Link. Link must then attack it with the Fire Rod or his Sword. After a few hits, it will disappear into the shadows and reappear in the middle of the arena, where it create a new barrier of Ice.

After taking enough damage, Dharkstare's eye will become red, its tentacles will become purple, and it will increase in speed and begin to utilize two sets of Ice orbs, meaning that it can create two freezing triangles at the same time. It is fought in the same manner.

Once Dharkstare is defeated, Link will receive a Heart Container and a beam will lower from above, allowing Link to reach the Painting of Rosso on a platform to the north.

Nomenclature

Dharkstare is a portmanteau of the words "dark" and "stare", with a stylized spelling like the name of Kholdstare. Similarly, its original Japanese name is the same as Kholdstare's, シュアイズ (Shuaizu), but with the added prefix ブラック (Burakku) or "Black".
