Guay

From Zelda Wiki, the Zelda encyclopedia

Guays are recurring Enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.(OoTOcarina of Time | MMMajora's Mask | TPTwilight Princess | SSSkyward Sword | EoWEchoes of Wisdom)[1][2][name references needed] They are crow-like enemies that will often attempt to fly into the player.

Characteristics

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Guays have small, black bodies and wings with purple highlights, a large head, and no apparent legs. They have a big, orange, pointed beak with a pair of black eyes surrounded by a red ring, and two, spade-like tail feathers connected to each other. In Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D, their body color is changed to dark purple with magenta highlights.

Guays appear in various locations in Ocarina of Time, some examples including Lake Hylia, Desert Colossus, and, at nighttime, Lon Lon Ranch. Upon coming into close enough proximity, Guays will begin to pursue Link and attempt to fly into him. They can be defeated using the Sword or a ranged weapon such as the Fairy Bow, though they will continually respawn. Defeating ten Guays will result in a larger individual spawning. When defeated, Guays will often drop Rupees, with larger individuals dropping ones of higher value. Using a Deku Nut to stun them will make them retreat instead of temporarily stunning them.

Majora's Mask

It's a Guay. You don't know about this one? Just attack it before it swoops down on you. That's all there is to it.

Guays reappear in Majora's Mask, retaining their behavior and the larger Guays from the previous game. They are more common in Termina, with some locations where they can be found including Termina Field, Zora Cape, and the Stone Tower Temple.

A lone Guay can be seen flying around the exterior of Clock Town. Link can play one of the four Temple songs so the Guay will begin dropping progressively more valuable Rupees.[3]

Twilight Princess

In Twilight Princess, Guays retain a similar body shape as prior games, but are colored black with scruffy feathering on their wings and tails. They additionally have a dull yellow-orange, more rounded beak with a horn-like protrusion on their lower jaw, solid cyan eyes, a pair of orange legs, and only one set of tail feathers.

Guays are typically found in large flocks throughout Hyrule Field and in the Kakariko Village Graveyard, though some can be found solitary. Some flocks can be found a;ready in flight while others roost in trees and will take flight when disturbed. Members of the flock will fly in circles out of Link's range, occasionally swooping down at him. Most weapons, including the Sword and the Hero's Bow, can defeat them in one hit. Link can also use the Gale Boomerang to stun and draw in one or more individuals. If all the Guays in a flock are defeated, a large number of Rupees will fall from the sky.

Skyward Sword

Target lock: Guay

This bird seemingly jettisons its droppings upon people's heads on purpose. It is unclear if this is due to a carefree attitude or pure malice.

Should its droppings land on you, I calculate the probability of your intense aggravation at 100%.

In Skyward Sword, Guays are given a rounder physique and have a yellow hooked beak with black, squinting eyes, a pair of feathers atop their head, dark purple coloring, grey, scaly legs, and four tail feathers.

While Guays retain their divebomb attack, they are additionally able to defecate on Link's head in Skyward Sword. While Link has a Guay's droppings on his head, his Stamina gradually drains until it is removed by rolling or performing a Spin Attack. Rupee Guays can also be found carrying Rupees in the Sky, which can be snatched by charging into them with the Crimson Loftwing.

Echoes of Wisdom

Guays are Bird-like Monsters found soaring above Hyrule Field. They have purple feathers, and a yellow beak and feet. They dive at their targets to attack.[2]

When copied as an Echo, they have an Echo cost of three. As Echoes, they can be held to glide through the air.

Trivia

  • The Guays in Ocarina of Time, and by extension Majora's Mask, were designed by Satomi Asakawa.[4]
