Rutala Dam is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Features and Overview

Breath of the Wild

Rutala Dam is the larger of two dams containing the East Reservoir Lake in the Lanayru Great Spring. It is located on the southern side of of the Reservoir, and it bears a large Dock that extends into the Lake itself. Rutala Dam is the origin point of Rutala River. Rain will constantly fall onto the Dam before Divine Beast Vah Ruta has been calmed.[3]

During the Era of Prosperity 10,000 years before Breath of the Wild, Rutala Dam was constructed through a joint effort between the Hylians and the Zora in an effort to stem the floods that plagued Lanayru every 10 years.[4][5] Prior to Link awakening from his Slumber of Restoration, Divine Beast Vah Ruta became active again and situated itself in the East Reservoir Lake, where it began spouting an endless amount of Rain.[3][6] As a result, the Water level in the Reservoir grew, and the Zora became fearful that Rutala Dam could burst, endangering the lives of those both in Zora's Domain and in Hylian settlements downstream.[3][7] Since they would need the help of a Hylian to stop the Divine Beast, Sidon left Zora's Domain in search of a one.[8]

After Link frees Vah Ruta during the "Divine Beast Vah Ruta" Main Quest, Mipha will pilot the Divine Beast out of the East Reservoir Lake by passing under Rutala Dam.

  5. Once every 10 years, the Lanayru region experiences unusually heavy rainfall. The Zora River flooded every time. The tides damages not only our domain but our people, washing away poor souls and causing great suffering and disarray. The Zora king of that time, after seeking aid from the king of Hyrule, rode out to see what could be done. By joining the architectural genius of the Zora and Hyrule's technological prowess, East Reservoir Lake was swiftly built. Thanks to this fruitful partnership, Hyrule was no longer plagued by these devastating floods. — History of the Zora, Part Two (Breath of the Wild)

  7. Sadly, the rains have filled the easten reservoir nearly to the point of flooding. If the reservoir bursts, as it soon will, I fear immense damage will befall not only Zora's Domain... but also the area downstream from us.
