His mysterious dungeon-simulation game is very popular in Hyrule. It gives players the illusion of fighting real monsters in real dungeons.
Simon is a resident of Hyrule Town, where he runs Simon's Simulations[3]. He has a daughter, Leila, who attends Funday School. He also has an interest in pickles, as after refusing to play his game he offers Link some of his homemade pickles.[4]
Trivia
- In the Japanese version of The Minish Cap, Simon speaks the Kyoto dialect.[5]
- When Link refuses to play Simon's Simulations, Simon offers him a "ぶぶ漬け (bubuzuke)",[6] a local name for chazuke used in Kyoto.
- "Offering a bubuzuke" is known as a Kyoto-style gesture used by the resident of the house to incite the guest to leave,[7] as it implies the guest must be hungry because their visit is too long.
- The pickles Simon offers in the American English and the European English versions could be a mistranslation of bubuzuke, whose suffix -zuke can be translated as "pickled".[4][8]
- When Link refuses to play Simon's Simulations, Simon offers him a "ぶぶ漬け (bubuzuke)",[6] a local name for chazuke used in Kyoto.
- Simon seems to be based on the director of The Minish Cap, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, who was born in Kyoto.[9]
Nomenclature
Simon is a male given name from the Hebrew שִׁמְעוֹן (shim'ón). Simon's Japanese name, シマロ (Shimaro), may be a contraction of "Fujibayashi" and "Hidemaro".

Hidemaro Fujibayashi
Born on October 1, 1972. From Kyoto. Worked on "Magical Tetris Challenge" (PS, '99) and other games as a planner and director. His debut in TLoZ series were "Oracle of Seasons" and "Oracle of Ages". After that, he contributed to the development of "Four Swords" in "A Link to the Past & Four Swords" and "The Minish Cap". His first appearance in the Nintendo Dream interview was in volume 124 ('04). He was a Capcom employee at the time and quit the company to join Nintendo.
