Southern Mine

From Zelda Wiki, the Zelda encyclopedia

The Southern Mine is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][3]

Features and Overview

Breath of the Wild

The Southern Mine is a small quarry that sits along the Mountain Road in western Eldin Canyon. It is denoted by the third Death Mountain Marker.[4] The Mine is staffed by several Gorons, who work in separate day and night shifts.[5] Amenities for when the Gorons are not mining, including metal tents and a lit Cooking Pot, are set up for use between shifts. A number of Ore Deposits can be throughout around the Southern Mine, which can be broken to yield Gems. Since it is part of a Scorching Climate, Link requires at least one level of Flame Guard to traverse the Mine without being set on Fire.

The Southern Mine is an operation by the Goron Group Mining Company.[6] The Gems excavated by the Gorons here are sold throughout Hyrule, thereby fueling Goron City's economy.[7][8][9] Originally, the Goron Group Mining Company used to mine at the Death Mountain Summit, but they relocated to the Southern Mine by Bludo's advisory when the Divine Beast Vah Rudania appeared.[10][11]

During the "Fireproof Lizard Roundup" Side Quest, Kima, a Hylian traveler visiting the Southern Mine, asks Link to help him find 10 Fireproof Lizards he can bring back home as a souvenir.[12] Once Link has the Fireproof Lizards, he can give them to Kima, who gives him Fireproof Armor as a reward.[13]

One of the Goron miners, Greyson, expresses that he is tired of mining and desires a job where he could use his strength to make an actual difference.[14] As part of the "From the Ground Up" Side Quest, he can be invited to move to Tarrey Town in Akkala to help Hudson demolish boulders.[15] Greyson and his younger brother, Pelison, then depart from the Southern Mine.[16]

The Southern Mine is part of the Death Mountain stage. During "Daruk, the Goron Hero" Scenario, a horde of Monsters begin to attack the Southern Mine.[3] This forces the Warriors to split apart and fight the Monsters separately.[17] After the Igneo Talus has been defeated, a group of Fire Moblin will lay siege to the Southern Mine.[18] As a result, some Warriors must stay behind to defend the Mine while others travel up Death Mountain.[19] To aid them, several Goron Captains move to help with the Southern Mine's defense.[20][21]
