Added Effects,(BotWBreath of the Wild | TotKTears of the Kingdom)[1][2] also known as Effects,(TotKTears of the Kingdom)[3] are a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.[name references needed]

Overview

Added Effects are a type of buff that Link can acquire by consuming Meals and Elixirs, or by equipping various pieces of Armor. They can buff Link in a variety of ways, from increasing his movement speed, to augmenting his combat prowess.[3][4] Most Added Effects obtained through Meals or Elixirs will have a limited duration, determined by the Ingredients of the dish, while Added Effects obtained via Armor will be available for as long as the Armor piece is equipped. Some Added Effects can have different levels of potency, increasing their effectiveness. Certain Added Effects can stack to up to three total levels of potency, while others cap at one or two levels.

When active, most Added Effects will be shown in the Inventory to the left of Link's model. The current level of potency, the max possible level, and the Added Effect's name and icon will all be displayed. Outside of the Inventory, active Meal or Elixir buffs will be shown below Link's Life Gauge, provided that the Pro HUD option is disabled. Some Added Effects are not shown directly in the Inventory when active, but their existence may be indicated by an Item's description.

Link can only have one type of duration-based Added Effect from Meals or Elixirs active at a time. However, Added Effects can stack between Meals or Elixirs and Armor. This means that Link can have up to four different active buffs shown in the Inventory at a time, or if he has two pieces of Attack Up Armor equipped, he can consume a Meal or Elixir that grants a level one Attack Up Effect for a total of three levels.

Set Bonuses

Main article: Set Bonus

Set Bonuses are a rarer type of Added Effect obtained exclusively through certain Armor Sets.

Breath of the Wild

In Breath of the Wild, there are 18 Added Effects that are visible in the Inventory when active and 13 that are hidden, totaling to 31 different Added Effects.

In the Memory "Silent Princess", Zelda finds a Hot-Footed Frog and tells Link about its special properties,[5][6] referencing the Speed Up Effect that an Elixir made with a Hot-Footed Frog can provide.

Tears of the Kingdom

Of the 31 Added Effects available in Breath of the Wild, 28 of them return in Tears of the Kingdom. With the addition of new Armor pieces and Ingredients, there are 17 new Added Effects, eight of which are hidden. The glowing effect of the Radiant Set also received the name NightGlow. The Effects "Guardian Resist Up", "AncientPowUp", and "See Enemy HP" are no longer available within Tears of the Kingdom. With 27 visible Effects and 19 hidden Effects available, there are 46 different Added Effects present in Tears of the Kingdom. Several Added Effects were renamed or received small changes, such as the new mobility options for the Swim Up Waterfalls Effect.

In Tears of the Kingdom, Link can find several Wells containing Notes on Tables written by Aurie Taamu. The Note on the Table in the Outskirt Hill Well describes the chef's experience eating a Meal made with Fire Fruit. The dish caused his strength to "light up like a flambé", enabling him to defeat monsters with ease, but did not protect him against the desert heat.[7] This effect is known as Hot Weather Attack, which amplifies Link's attacks with Fire when in unbearably hot climates.

In the Side Quest "Gloom-Borne Illness", Lasli's grandmother Nanna has fallen ill from Gloom sickness. If Link speaks to Lasli, she will explain to him that she has been trying to cook a Veggie Porridge to help cure the effects of the Gloom, but that she cannot find an Ingredient that works.[8] If Link cooks a Sunny Veggie Porridge and speaks to Lasli, he can give it to her so that she can use its Gloom Recovery Effect to cure her grandmother.[9][10]

  4. Some results are warming. Others may replenish stamina. What effect you gain will depend on the ingredients. The restless crickets hopping around here restore vigor when used in elixirs. This is one example. There are many others. The name often expresses the nature. — Culinary Construct (Tears of the Kingdom)

  7. Is the desert a harsh environment with extreme temperature differences? Sure. But a place of death? No! The desert's the place where life truly comes alive! A sandy sea of energy where you can draw out all of your power. After all, it was under that hot desert sun where I first dined on a dish made with fire fruit. I felt my strength light up like a flambé. Monsters I struggled against before fell before me like flies! I'd never felt such joy, such strength! Then the desert heat overwhelmed me, and I collapsed in a heap. The moral is although fire fruit increases your strength, it doesn't offer any protection from the heat. Power and protection—such a fine pairing that it's hard to choose one to give up. I am the man who eats his way through Hyrule's harshest environments.

  8. Are you a traveler? I guess it doesn't really matter who you are, so long as you're willing to listen. You see, it's my grandmother... She got too close to that nasty gloom stuff, and now she's sick and bedridden. Porridge is about the only thing she can keep down right now too. I've been trying to mix in ingredients that could help with gloom sickness... But none of them have had any effect. I need to cook a porridge that will make my grandmother better, and I need to do it soon. — Lasli (Tears of the Kingdom)
  9. Wh-what did you say this was, again? A sunny veggie porridge?
I've never made anything "sunny" before. Maybe this will help my grandmother!
    — Lasli (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. Oh, Claree. I'm so sorry I worried you.
But this nice young man made me a wonderful sunny veggie porridge, so I'm feeling much better now.
