The Bound Chest is a recurring Object in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Location and Uses

The Minish Cap

According to legend, when Monsters overran the kingdom of Hyrule,[3] the Minish granted the Picori Blade and the Light Force to the Hero of Men,[4] who used them to drive off the monsters.[5] It is later revealed that the Hero actually sealed the evil monsters within the Bound Chest, locking it with the Picori Blade itself.[6] A secret part of the legend, known only to the Royal Family of Hyrule, explains that the Light Force was sealed within the royal line of Princesses.[7]

In celebration of the victory, the kingdom holds a yearly Festival,[8] which includes a Sword-fighting tournament. The winner of the tournament is allowed to touch the Picori Blade still resting inside the Bound Chest.[9] Vaati is declared the winner of the tournament and is presented with the Bound Chest. Because the commonly known portion of the legend did not specify where the Light Force was hidden, Vaati believes that the relic is found within the Bound Chest and shatters the Picori Blade in order to open it. However, the Bound Chest only contained the once-sealed evil, which escapes to plague the world again.[10]

Other Appearances

The Minish Cap (Himekawa)

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

The Bound Chest holds a similar role to its The Minish Cap counterpart. In the past, evil Monsters appeared to menace Hyrule, and were sealed inside of the Bound Chest by the Picori Blade, bestowed upon the Hero of Men by the Minish.[11][12] This led to the creation of the Picori Festival.[13] Following his victory in the Sword-Fighting Tournament, Vaati opens the Bound Chest, believing it to contain the Light Force.[2]

Trivia

  • The Bound Chest may be based upon Pandora's box, which was used at the beginning of humanity, in Greek mythology, to seal all the evils of the world until it was opened and they were released.
