Biography

The Bucket Mouse is the being answering the phone located in Old Man Ulrira's House. When called, the Bucket Mouse introduces themself and hangs up immediately after thanking Link for calling,[1] which leads the narration to express confusion.[2]

Trivia

  • In the French versions of Link's Awakening and Link's Awakening DX, the Bucket Mouse is replaced by Madonna. She answers in French with an English accent.[3] In the German version, the person calling fills out a meal order for a pizzeria, "Da Mario".[4]
  • In every version except for American English and British English of Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch, the Bucket Mouse is replaced by different dialogues.
    • In the Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, Canadian French, European French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin American Spanish, and European Spanish versions, the person behind the phone tells Link that he called the Nintendo Gallery.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] The two French versions and the German version make a further reference where the person asks Link if he has any Pictographs to share with them, similar to Carlov from The Wind Waker.
    • The Korean version refers to the Nintendo gallery simply as "a gallery",[15] and the Russian version replaces dialogues with an incoming call from someone who mistook that they called a pizzeria.[16] The change is likely due to the lack of official names for the Nintendo gallery in the two languages.
    • The Bucket Mouse's dialogue is labeled as belonging to "???", even if Link has called the phone before.[17]

Nomenclature

Bucket Mouse is named after a real fishing shop バケットマウス (Baketto Mausu) located in Neyagawa, Osaka Prefecture, Japan.[18][19] It is likely a mistranslation of "bucketmouth", a common name for the largemouth bass; both names are homophonic in Japanese.
