Calip is a researcher who lives in a cabin at Fort Hateno. He spends his time researching Ancient Shrines while boasting about his accomplishments in the field of research.[6] He demands that people address him by his professional title, Doctor Calip, claiming that he spent too much effort to simply be called by a standard honorific.[1] He highly values his work to the degree that he refused to tell his family where he conducts his archaeological research.[7]

If Link indulges in his desire to be honored with the title "Doctor," he will change his attitude towards Link and share some of his findings,[8] directly quoting from the worn book on his table, An Ancient Text.[9] This initiates the Shrine Quest "The Cursed Statue" as he dismisses Link to continue his research.[10]

Starting at 6:00 AM, Calip rushes to the site of his fieldwork. He stays there until 5:00 PM, at which point he begins to return home to avoid the monsters that appear at night.[11] If rain strikes as he is out, he will rush home, explaining that his metallic glasses are a conductive hazard for lightning.[12] If a rain shower hits before he leaves for fieldwork, he cancels his trip until the rain passes.[13]

If Link speaks to him while he is out of his cabin, he will allow Link to observe him work provided that he stays out of his way.[14] After completing "The Cursed Statue", Calip will become determined to solve the mystery of Kam Urog Shrine and continues to take trips out to his research site.[15] There, he will comment on the timing of the Shrine's appearance.[16]

Calip is an archaeologist for the Zonai Survey Team who can be found in Kakariko Village.[17]

According to Calip's Journal, at the start of the Upheaval, Calip observed ruins falling from the sky west of his home and was grateful that neither he nor his home were harmed.[18] A member of the Zonai Survey Team visited Calip and told him about the Ring Ruins.[19] He was attracted by the idea of many inquisitive types like Tauro gathering at Kakariko Village to investigate the ruins.[19] He prepared to depart for Kakariko Village, hoping that the members of the Zonai Survey Team will address him as a doctor and a genius.[20] In addition, he left his Journal behind at his home to let any wandering traveler know they may use the supplies he has left behind.[20] Upon joining the Zonai Survey Team, Calip admired Tauro for his dedicated focus and willingness to make discoveries even without credit.[21][22][23] Calip, on the other hand, wishes to receive credit and have landmarks named after him.[23]

Calip guards the Floating Ring Ruin, believing the site to be off-limits by the Order of Princess Zelda.[24][25] If Link attempts to get too close to the Floating Ring Ruin, Calip will stop him.[26] Calip is curious about the contents of the Floating Ring Ruin and desires for Princess Zelda to call him Doctor Calip.[27][28] He does not know why Princess Zelda has forbidden the site, but he speculates it is for villagers' safety.[29]

During the Main Quest "Secret of the Ring Ruins", Link informs Paya and Tauro that the Princess Zelda's order was given by a Phantom Ganon impostor.[30] Paya then gives Link permission to open the Floating Ring Ruin.[31] Using Ascend, Link is able to enter the Floating Ring Ruin and take a Picture of the Ring Ruins Stone Slab inside. When Link shows his Picture to Tauro, he is shocked, calling over Paya and Calip to see it.[32] As they examine the Picture, Tauro is able to decipher the words "Mineru" and "southeast".[33] Calip notes that Mineru could be the name of a Sage.[34]

Although Tauro is excited, he notices that Paya appears to be thinking.[35] She is able to translate more of the Zonai writing, referring to a Dragon land in the southeast.[36] Fearing Paya is upstaging him, Calip points out that the Ring Ruins Stone Slab could be referring to the Zonai Ruins.[37] Tauro praises Calip for this, which he appreciates.[38] Looking back on what they have learned, Tauro determines that they can find out more by visiting the Zonai Ruins.[39] He asks Calip to accompany him, which he agrees to.[40] They plan to established their base camp near the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower.[41] Tauro and Calip then depart for the Faron Grasslands.[42]

At the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower, Link can find Calip near a makeshift Tent.[43] He welcomes Link to his base, revealing that Tauro has already left to see the Zonai Ruins near Dracozu Lake.[44] If it is daytime, Calip expresses his hope to find more clues, though he claims he needs to rest before joining Tauro.[45] At night, Calip is worried that Tauro has yet to return, wondering if he is caught up in his investigation.[46]

Later, when Link drops a Zonai Charge or Large Zonai Charge on the altar inside a Tall Dragon Pillar while wearing the entire Charged Set, the eyes of the Tall Dragon Pillars begin to glow and their horns start to spark. All of them are simultaneously stuck by Lightning. Drawn by the Lightning, Tauro and Calip arrive at the altar.[47] They are shocked to find Link inside, though Calip is relieved that he is unharmed.[48] Tauro asks Link if he knows what happened.[49] He is impressed by Link's findings, though Calip laments that they are unable to visit the Sky Islands themselves.[50] Since he needs to make a report to Purah, Tauro leaves Calip in charge of investigating the Zonai Ruins further.[51] Though Calip is hesitant at first, Tauro's assurances convince him to stay.[52]

Everyone forgets I'm a doctor for some reason...
    — Calip (Breath of the Wild)

  6. HA! Let me guess... You caught wind of the great Dr. Calip's groundbreaking research and just HAD to meet him for yourself. Heh... No? Don't tell me you've never even HEARD of me! After I dedicated my life to researching the ancient shrines?! *sigh* Well, you'd better remember my name, for it's not the last time you'll hear of it! — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  7. And since you asked, I'll inform you that I'm engaged in analyzing ancient texts. I haven't time for idle chitchat. [Ancient texts?] Soon, my long years of research will be revealed...and all the world will hail it as the discovery of the century! To prevent any undue attention, I haven't even told my family about my work. — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  8. You'll understand, I'm sure. [Of course, Dr. Calip.]
    Doctor...
Did I...just hear you call me doctor? As in, not merely Calip, but DOCTOR Calip? It rolled off your tongue so naturally. It was downright salivary! Hrm... This changes things... Very well then! I'm feeling charitable, so I'll let a few things spill. This is just between us, understand.
    — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  9. "When a dark light resides in the cursed statue's eyes, pierce its gaze to purge the seal from the shrine." I'm still in the process of deciphering that one, so I don't suppose there's any harm in sharing it with you. — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  10. That's my life in a nutshell. Days filled with researching shrines and nights spent studying ancient texts. That leaves me no time to converse with passing strangers, so farewell. — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  11. I only do fieldwork at shrines and ruins during the day. Why, you ask? Hmm, could it have something to do with the hordes of monsters roaming at night? What an ignoramus... — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  12. I mustn't be outside right now! My glasses are unfortunately metallic, so I must remain indoors at all costs! [What do you mean?] I don't mind a little rain, but the lightning in Hyrule is alarmingly attracted to anything metallic. No, on days like this, it's best to shut oneself in and wait for the rain to clear. If you must go gallivanting across the countryside, take care you don't get struck, at least. — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  13. Today's research trip is on hold. My glasses are unfortunately metallic... In this weather, my life could be at risk! — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  14. You again? What now? You want to tag along on my fieldwork? Well, I suppose it might do you some good to see an expert at work. Just try to stay out of the way. — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  15. Huh. The mystery deepens... My only response can be to redouble my efforts—now that the shrine is visible—to solve the mystery at last! — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  16. A shrine? Here? But I hadn't completed my inquiry into the mystery of the ancient texts. Hrm... This must be what we in the archaeology profession refer to as a "stroke of luck." Er, not that I believe in any such thing... — Calip (Breath of the Wild)
  17. If it applies to an archaeologist like me, it certainly applies to an amateur like you. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. They're calling it the Upheaval. Apt name for it, I'd say. Strange ruins fell from the sky onto the plains west of here, and there are reports of spindly, mechanical monsters. This sort of thing is happening all over Hyrule, apparently. I'm fortunate that neither I nor my home were harmed, but such an event is sure to have caused major damage elsewhere. The more outlandish rumors suggest that Hyrule Castle has risen into the sky. Rather difficult to credit that one. What could have caused all this? I can feel the desire to find the truth welling up within me. — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. 19.0 19.1 I received a visitor. He was a researcher from some outfit calling themselves the Zonai Survey Team. He claimed to be merely passing through the area, but clearly he had come to draw on my expertise. According to his story, large ruins have fallen on Kakariko Village, northwest of this house. People are calling them the Ring Ruins. A great many inquisitive types like me are gathering in Kakariko Village to investigate them. I see little choice but to join them. Without my intellect, they're bound to leap to all the wrong conclusions. The man history will remember as The Genius Dr. Calip shall solve this mystery faster than I can clean my glasses! — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. 20.0 20.1 My preparations are complete. It's time for me to depart for Kakariko Village. I foresee a day not long off when all the members of this survey team address me with respect and by my proper title. I will not return to this house until I am known by all as a doctor—nay, as a genius. This area has long been plagued by monsters, so I will leave this house in good order as a place of refuge. To you travelers who might read what I have penned here, rest well. You are of course welcome to use any of the things I have left behind.
    -Dr. Calip
    — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. While Tauro and I were taking a break, he asked me, Hey, Calip, what attracted you to join the Zonai Survey Team?" A little flustered, I answered that I heard its research division was led by a brilliant man by the name of Tauro. Because of you, essentially. I meant it sincerely, and in my heart, I longed to continue... "You're not like these other dullards, you know. You immediately grasp the breadth of my vision." Of course, no such thing passed my lips. But I am certain that Tauro, and no one else, is the man who can help the world see my indescribable worth. — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. Our leader Tauro has done nothing but surprise me since I joined the Zonai Survey Team. One day, I arrived at the research site to find him sitting on bare earth as he stared at a stone slab. I wished him a good morning, and to that he turned to me and said... "Ah, Calip. Sorry I didn't notice you. Working overtime today, huh? I thought back to the night before. As I was heading in, I saw Tauro sitting on bare earth, examining a stone slab. It hit me then—he had stayed up all through the night puzzling over the slab, never moving from his perch. I felt a profound envy of his ability to focus so completely that the passing of time escaped his notice. — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  23. 23.0 23.1 It's a researcher's duty to use his wisdom and intuition to bring to light historical truths which the ruins would keep secret. We carry on the work of our forebears and continue our pursuit tirelessly, then pass what we learn to those who come after. Our leader Tauro understands well that this is not a task that can be completed in a single generation. He says this is why he wants to make so many discoveries, even if the credit to whom they belong is lost. That's the sort of man Tauro is. But I, Dr. Calip, won't be so easily satisfied. My discoveries will be noteworthy, to be sure, but it is my name that I want to live on forever. Not just in people's memories, but in books, stone tablets, and—if I might be a trifle immodest—landmarks! Calip Valley, Calip River, the Calip Hills... My dreams recognize no boundaries!
    -Calip
    — Calip's Journal (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. Under Princess Zelda's orders, everyone is strictly forbidden from getting close to that ring. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. Princess Zelda visited Kakariko Village recently. Her orders were clear—of all the Ring Ruins, this site is off-limits. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. Hey! You there! Come here! Haven't you heard? It's strictly forbidden to get near that Ring Ruin, by Princess Zelda's orders. So you'd better be on your way. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. I reeeeally want to get in there and poke around. But I'd be directly opposing Princess Zelda's orders... — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  28. Is this the end of my dream that someday Princess Zelda will call me Doctor Calip? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  29. She left before giving any sort of reason why... Maybe she wanted to keep the villagers safe. Ruins aren't known for being structurally sound, after all. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  30. Wh-what? The Zelda who appeared after the Upheaval was a creation of the Demon King? And the real Princess Zelda still hasn't been found? But... How can this be true? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
It's such an unbelievable tale, and yet... I trust you completely, Master Link. It must be as you say. It is hard to explain, but the princess we saw was somehow unfamiliar... It was as though her very aura was different. — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  31. You are exactly right! There is no longer any reason to prohibit your research. Let's open up the floating Ring Ruin at once, Mr. Tauro! — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  32. [What about this image?] What's this you've got? Huh? Could it... Could it really be... Paya! Calip! Look at this! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. ... Could this be...the interior of the floating Ring Ruin?! Wow! The stone slab is so clearly visible! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
There appear to be Zonai inscriptions on this one as well, just like in the other Ring Ruins. Tauro, if you would? — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
Right! Let me see what I can decipher. Hmm... "...promise...Zelda...solemnly signed... Mineru, Sage of... "...hide the key...southeast... Entrust...future...wish...defeat...Demon King..." That's all I can make out. There's some lettering I can't figure out before "southeast," but "Mineru" seems to be someone's name. — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. Hmm. Look at the context of "Mineru." I do believe this is the first time one of these slabs has put a name to a sage! It also mentions "Zelda" and a "Demon King." How fascinating! — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. Aha! The inscriptions are telling us all sorts of essential information! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
... — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
What's the matter? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. Oh, nothing. It's just... That part before the "southeast" section... I think it says..."dragon land." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. Oh no...I'm being upstaged! Ahem. Where were we? Something about a dragon land to the southeast? Hmm. How familiar are you with southeast Hyrule? There's a site in Faron that has long been known as the Zonai Ruins. It predates the ruins falling from the sky, and is home to many ancient relics. If memory serves, there were dragon designs on those ruins that I haven't seen anywhere else. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. Oho, Calip! Great catch! The Zora Ruins in Faron! There's a good chance that's exactly what this is pointing us at. That's our Calip! Fantastic work! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
I... I... What did you just say? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
That...this inscription is pointing us toward Faron's Zonai Ruins? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
No, not that. The next bit. A certain adjective was used? I believe it started with "fan" and ended with "tastic"? What was it again? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
Ah. "Fantastic work," you mean? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
Hee-hee, yes! Fantastic work! That is what you said! Hm. Yes. "Calip, what fantastic work!" he said. Fantastic... Me! — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. Link, when we put together the script on this stone slab and translate it... We get definite mentions of the Sage Mineru, the Demon King, and someone with the same name as Princess Zelda. Something related to all three of them must be waiting at the Zonai Ruins in southeast Hyrule! We've landed a real catch here! Thank you for your help. Truly. Now we've no time to dawdle. There's research to be done! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. Calip! Will you join me? — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
Oh! Of course! I would be a...*ahem*...fantastic addition to the team. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
Very good! With that settled, let's be off to the Zonai Ruins in Faron! First we head southwest... — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. We'll establish a base in the Popla Foothills, at the Skyview Tower by the ruins. — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. In search of new discoveries... WE MAKE FOR FARON! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  43. Ah, so you're here. Came to learn about the Zonai from an expert, I gather? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  44. I should welcome you to our humble base of operations. Behold! This is where the real investigation starts. It might not seem like much next to that Skyview Tower, I'll concede. Going forward, our research will proceed from here. Tauro has already gone off to the Zonai Ruins. If memory serves, he spoke of starting his investigation around Dracozu Lake. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  45. Go southeast and you should find the Zonai Ruins he volunteered to inspect. I'm curious if the "dragon land" written of at the Ring Ruin will have any more leads on the Demon King or Princess Zelda. Ordinarily, I'd be right there at his side in the field, of course. But I'm worn out from setting up the base. I'll need some time to recuperate before I begin my own survey. Goodness me, is there anyhing at all that slows down Tauro? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  46. I don't know his exact whereabouts, but if you go southeast, you should find the Zonai Ruins he volunteered to inspect. That said...it's night now and he hasn't returned, which is worrying. Did he get swept up in his work at the site? My goodness, the man is absolutely indefatigable. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  47. Calip! Did you see that?! Lightning struck that dragon pillar too! Huh? Is someone in those ruins?! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  48. Oh! It's you again. We think a terrible lightning strike hit here, but I'm glad to see you weren't hurt. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  49. I've never seen lightning strike like that! And even stranger, the dragon statues' eyes seemed to glow just before it. Link, if you know anything about this, fill us in on what happened! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  50. Unbelievable... A mechanism in the ancient ruins got rid of the thunderclouds and revealed some new sky islands? Great catch! Another amazing discovery on the book. In fact, I'd say... It's the haul of the century! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
It's a significant discovery, to be sure. I'd like to go investigate further, but we have no way of getting up there. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  51. Hmm. You're right. That doesn't make it any less exciting, though. We need to report this to Purah right away. Calip, I'm going back to Kakariko Village. I want to write up the recent events around the floating Ring Ruin in a report for Purah. You should stick around here to conduct a thorough investigation. Find out if there are any more discoveries to be made! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  52. Wha— Remain here? You mean...alone? — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
Yes! Even if we can't get up to the sky, there's so much to discover on land! It's our duty to unravel all of it. You can do this, Calip! — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
He wants me to investigate alone? Fieldwork isn't my strongest suit... But this may be my chance to make a historic discovery! Right! Leave this to me, Tauro. I'll begin preparing at once. I'll need to head back to our base of operations for a bit first. — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
