Prior to the Great Calamity, which occurred 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, the Gerudo Chief was Urbosa. Due to her unique skills, she was chosen to be a Champion and pilot Divine Beast Vah Naboris against Calamity Ganon.[7] Initially, the Gerudo were hesitant to risk their Chief's life, but Urbosa felt it was necessary in order to protect the world. She also disliked Ganon's association with the Gerudo.[8] However, Urbosa was separated from her Divine Beast when the Great Calamity struck. This allowed Thunderblight Ganon to overtake the Divine Beast and kill her.[9] Since then, her Spirit has been trapped within Vah Naboris.[10]

The previous Gerudo Chief was Riju's mother. She told Riju stories about the Champions and Divine Beasts. One legend was about Divine Beast Vah Naboris being a guardian Deity to the Gerudo.[11] Another claimed that Princess Zelda placed Link in a Slumber of Restoration when he was injured during the Great Calamity.[12] She also gave Riju a pet Sand Seal, Patricia, as a gift.[13] However, Riju's mother recently passed away, resulting in her daughter succeeding her as the Gerudo Chief.[14] Following her inheritance of the title, Riju noticed that many of the Gerudo have been kinder toward her, though she also sees that they are concerned. She has been worried that she will never be as great of a Gerudo Chief as her mother was.[15]

Soon after Riju became the Gerudo Chief, Divine Beast Vah Naboris reactivated and began rampaging in the Gerudo Desert.[11] During the confusion caused by this, the Yiga broke into Gerudo Town and stole Riju's family heirloom, the Thunder Helm.[16] As part of the Main Quest "Divine Beast Vah Naboris", Link approaches Riju to offer his assistance in appeasing Vah Naboris.[17] Upon realizing that Link is a Champion, Riju and the captain of the Gerudo Soldiers, Buliara, decide to test his skills by having him retrieve the Thunder Helm.[18] Once she has the Thunder Helm, Riju is able to call on her royal ancestors to activate its power, with which she protects herself and Link from Vah Naboris's Lightning.[19] Afterwards, Riju and Link Sand-Seal Surf to Vah Naboris together, with Riju protecting Link while he attacks its feet.[20]

Inside Divine Beast Vah Naboris, Link hears the voice of Urbosa, who guides him through reclaiming the Divine Beast.[21][22][23] By defeating Thunderblight Ganon, Link frees Urbosa's Spirit.[24] She is then able to pilot Vah Naboris on top of Spectacle Rock and take aim at Hyrule Castle. When Link finally faces Calamity Ganon, Urbosa and any other Champions whose Divine Beasts Link has freed will unleash an attack on him.[25]

Age of Imprisonment

Main articles: Ganondorf and Ardi

In Age of Imprisonment, Ganondorf is initially the Gerudo Chief, having received his title as a result of being the only male Gerudo born in the past century.[3][29] After the Scenario "Terror of the Sands" has been completed, the Gerudo choose Ardi as their new Chief, claiming she would have received the title if Ganondorf had not come to power.[30][31] Ultimately, Ardi decides to accept this position.[32] She proposes an alliance with Rauru, the King of Hyrule, wherein the Gerudo join him in the war against Demon King Ganondorf.[33] Rauru accepts her offer,[34] and he grants her an Envoy Mask as a symbol of the newfound friendship between the Gerudo and the rest of Hyrule.[35][36]

They tell me such a dangerous task is not fitting for the chief. I understand their fear. However, I intend to accept this task. Calamity Ganon's resurrection does not only threaten Hyrule, but the whole world. I refuse to sit idly by. Ganon is also closely associated with the Gerudo...an association I deeply resent. I have to find out more... — Chief's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  12. Hmm... Buliara, a memory just jumped into my head—something my mother spoke of. When the Calamity happened, the princess of Hyrule placed a fallen swordsman into a deep sleep. That swordsman, much like our new friend here, was named Link...though it always seemed more legend than fact. — Riju (Breath of the Wild)

  14. Buliara told me today that Mother has passed on and gone to a better place... She said that my mother's death means I am now the chief of the Gerudo people. I wish she'd stayed here, though. I don't see how it can be a better place with us apart... — Chief's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  15. Ever since I became the chief, the people in town have been a lot nicer to me. But if I look carefully, I can still see the worry in their eyes. It seems more common than when Mother was chief... Mother... Will I ever be as great a chief as you were? — Chief's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  16. Ever since I went to investigate the Divine Beast, Buliara has made a point of never leaving my side. Even now, with such a valuable heirloom stolen by thieves, she refuses to tear herself away from me even for a moment. She takes all the blame for the theft, however. Nothing can change her mind about being responsible. Meanwhile, I can't help but feel that the theft happened because I am not yet ready to be chief... The soldiers search tirelessly, trying to recover the heirloom. No one says a word about my leadership... But they must be thinking about how powerless their chief has proven to be. — Chief's Diary (Breath of the Wild)
  17. [I can calm Naboris.] You think you have what it takes to subdue something so powerful as a Divine Beast? The only ones who could ever control them were Champions like Lady Urbosa. And all the Champions died in the Calamity 100 years ago. — Buliara (Breath of the Wild)
  18. Lady Riju! I don't see how you can trust a complete stranger with something as important as this task. Perhaps if this person were first to prove his worth by recovering your stolen Thunder Helm... — Buliara (Breath of the Wild)
Ah, yes... An interesting suggestion. You see, there is only one thing in all of Hyrule that can withstand the lightning from Naboris. The Thunder Helm, a family heirloom and relic of the Gerudo. But as Buliara says, it was stolen from us. — Riju (Breath of the Wild)
You needn't worry, Lady Riju. If he truly is a Champion, this should be an easy task for him. — Buliara (Breath of the Wild)
  19. My name is Riju, descendant of the royal line and leader of the Gerudo people! With the power of the heirloom passed down in my family, I shall calm the Divine Beast Vah Naboris. Ancestors of the Gerudo! Answer my call! Aid me in this task! — Riju (Breath of the Wild)
  20. First, we'll use the sand seals to get in really close to that thing. I'll take the lead. I'm counting on you to shoot at its feet with bomb arrows. Naboris draws energy from the ground to keep moving. If you damage the feet, I think you can stop it. — Riju (Breath of the Wild)
  21. Well, well, well... You sure do know how to keep a woman waiting. I can't wait to see you take Naboris back from Ganon! One thing at a time. You'll need a map to find your way around. Head over to that Guidance Stone over there. Sounds easy, right? — Urbosa (Breath of the Wild)
  22. Good work getting the map of the Divine Beast! The terminals that control Naboris are noted by a series of glowing points on your map. Take Naboris back by activating all of the terminals. You're ready for this. — Urbosa (Breath of the Wild)
  23. Well done! That was the last of the terminals. Now...you'll need to start up the main control unit! Take a good look at your map. Head for the glowing mark you see there. You're doing well... but overconfidence can be a deadly foe. — Urbosa (Breath of the Wild)
  24. I knew you wouldn't let us down, Link. Thanks to your valor and skill, my soul is free and Naboris is ours once again. — Urbosa (Breath of the Wild)
  25. A hundred years in the making... Hold on, Princess. Our moment has arrived! — Urbosa (Breath of the Wild)
  26. Long, long ago...when the kingdom of Hyrule was still young... A great evil, the Demon King, emerged. He attacked the innocent and sought the destruction of Hyrule. He was our chief...before he changed. His obsession with power transformed him into a monster. — Ardi (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. Have you seen our town's pride and joy, the palace? It's the huge building just north of here! Our chief, Seera, holds assemblies for all of us Gerudo there. — Gerudo (Echoes of Wisdom)
