"The Broken Slate"

"Clues to the Sky" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

During "The Broken Slate", Jiahto translates the ancient Slate for Link, which reveals that the Sky can be accessed by shooting the "mark of the king" through a "droplet" on the "land of the sky fish".[2] Believing that Dorephan may soon return from his investigation, Jiahto suggests that Link consult with him.[3] Following this statement, "Clues to the Sky" will begin.

When Link enters the Throne Room of Zora's Domain, he will find Tumbo, Keye, and Laruta reenacting what happened to Dorephan through play.[4] According to them, Dorephan was injured while fighting a Sludge Monster, and he went to heal in a secret location.[5] However, they refuse to keep playing when they notice Link nearby, so Tumbo tells him to leave.[6]

By hiding in the Water of the throne, Link is able to eavesdrop on the children's game. At first they attempt to continue playing, but Keye struggles playing both the Monster and Muzu.[7] Laruta then wonders aloud what Dorephan's hiding spot is like.[8] Tumbo recalls asking him about it once, and it was called the "pristine sanctummy."[9] Since it is supposedly pristine, Keye reasons that the Water must be clean there.[10]

Tumbo claims that clean Water flows between Ploymus Mountain and Zora's Domain, and he heard there is a secret entrance behind a Waterfall there.[11] Laruta is impressed by the concept.[12] Keye suddenly remembers that Muzu warned them not to tell anyone, but Tumbo insists that it is fine since no one is listening.[13] He then decides that they should go through their game one more time, but Keye wants to play something else.[14]

Dorephan's introduction

Link can enter the Pristine Sanctum from either Lulu Lake or Mikau Lake. Inside, he will find Muzu caring for Dorephan, who is suffering from the effects of Sludge. Though Muzu is initially hostile toward Link, Dorephan stops him, claiming his is only causing confusion.[15] Dorephan greets Link and asks what has brought him to Zora's Domain, since he last heard that he and Zelda went missing.[16] Despite Dorephan's shock, Muzu still refuses to believe Link, claiming he saw Zelda right after the Upheaval began.[17]

Seeing no betrayal in Link's eyes, Dorephan declares that he is still an ally to them.[18] After Hyrule Castle began to float, Dorephan and Muzu left Zora's Domain to investigate the Sludge, but they were caught off-guard by Zelda appearing from the Sky and ordering a sludge monster to attack them.[19] Although Dorephan was able to defeat the Monster, he was injured, and he hid himself in the Pristine Sanctum to avoid word of Zelda's betrayal spreading.[20] Noting how their story contradicts Link's, Dorephan states that they may find answers in the Sky.[21]

Recalling that Jiahto was meant to be studying the ruins from the Sky, Dorephan wonders if he has found anything yet.[22] When Link relays the writing on the Slate, Dorephan reveals that the "mark of the king" refers to one of his scales, though he does not know anything about the ritual in which it is used.[23] Since Link is in need of it, Dorephan gives him five King's Scales, inviting him to take more if he runs out.[24] Due to recent events, Dorephan considers whether it may be time to pass on his title to Sidon.[25] While this concerns Muzu, Dorephan puts off his decision until after the Sludge crisis has ended.[26] He then asks Link to inform Sidon of both his condition and the King's Scale.[27]

Link can reach Floating Scales Island by Swimming up its Waterfall while wearing the Zora Armor. Once there, he must look to the southwest, from where the floating rocks surrounding the Island appear to form a drop of Water. From this angle, Link can Fuse one of the King's Scale to an Arrow and shoot it through the droplet, which causes it to land in East Reservoir Lake. A green Pillar of Light will then rise up to the Sky, completing "Clues to the Sky".

Objectives

Stage Description
1 "Stand upon the land of the sky fish, and behold its lofty view. Among the floating rocks you see, a droplet waits for you. Through this droplet shoot and arrow with the mark of the king. Do this trask, and you shall reveal a most wondrous thing." You deciphered a clue for finding the watery bridge. Jiahto suggests speaking with King Dorephan about the mark.
2 You overheard from the children in Zora's Domain that King Dorephan is at the Pristine Sanctum. It sounds like there is a secret entrance behind a clean waterfall somewhere between Ploymus Mountain and the domain.

Could it be, as Jiahto says, that King Dorephan knows something about the mark of the king?
3 "Stand upon the land of the sky fish, and behold its lofty view. Among the floating rocks you see, a droplet waits for you. Through this droplet shoot an arrow with the mark of the king. Do this task, and you shall reveal a most wondrous thing." You learned the mark of the king is the Zora king's scale. But what of the land of the sky fish and droplet?
Complete When you shot the mark of the king into the droplet visible from the land of the sky fish, a pillar of light appeared in the reservoir in the eastern part of the domain.

If the writing on the ancient stone slate is correct, this should indicate the hiding place of the watery bridge.

  16. "Hello, Link. It has been some time since we last spoke. I had received word that you went missing along with Princess Zelda. Why have you come here?" — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. "Well, well... To think that such a thing should transpire for the hero of Hyrule and Princess Zelda..." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
"You expect us to believe that Princess Zelda simply disappeared, just like that. Do not sully our ears with your lies! I saw Princess Zelda with my own eyes right after the phenomenon at Hyrule Castle took place!" — Muzu (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. "Calm yourself, Muzu. Link's eyes betray no hint of deception. He remains a trusted friend of the Zora. There must be an explanation." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. "Link. I will now tell you what happened when we last saw Princess Zelda... As well as the reason behind my seclusion here in the Pristine Sanctum. We encountered Princess Zelda just after Hyrule Castle ascended into the sky. Floating islands appeared as if from nowhere...sludge and fragments of ruins began raining down... Muzu and I had left the domain to investigate these strange occurrences. That is when it happened. Princess Zelda descended from the sky accompanied by a sludge monster. What happened next took us by surprise... She then unleashed the beast upon us." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. "King Dorephan valiantly vanquished the threat. However... He was gravely injured by the sludge during the battle... As for Princess Zelda, she vanished without a trace. If word got out that Princess Zelda lost her mind and harmed the Zora king... The resulting turmoil would be devastating. That is why were are temporarily remaining hidden within the Pristine Sanctum." — Muzu (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. "According to your story, Princess Zelda disappeared suddenly in the depths beneath Hyrule Castle. On the other hand, she suddenly appeared near Zora's Domain and unleashed a monster upon us. The waters of truth have become murkier still, but from the Zora perspective, one thing is clear. It all leads back to the sky. This disaster, the sludge, the monster, and even Princess Zelda. It may well be that the answer to these riddles can only be found skyward..." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. "Sidon ordered Jiahto, a historian well acquainted with ruins, to investigate. I wonder if any progress has been made..." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  23. "Ah! So you have already spoken with Jiahto! You say that the mark of the king was mentioned on the stone slate that was restored? Hm... Indeed, I do know of it. The mark of the king refers to a Zora king's scale. One of my scales, in other words. I have heard it called by the name you mentioned in an ancient ritual. However, none remain who know how it was used..." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. "If this particular scale of mine may prove useful to you, by all means, take a few. There is no need for restraint! This is as nothing to me. If you run out, simply return and acquire more. Wah ha ha!" — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. "After all that has transpired, and after much reflection, I have come to a realization. I must truly be getting on in years to have allowed a mere monster to catch me off guard. Perhaps the time is nearing for me to pass the title of king on to Sidon." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. "King Dorephan..." — Muzu (Tears of the Kingdom)
"In any case, that is a matter for another day, after the chaos surrounding the sludge has quieted." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. "Please inform Sidon about my situation and about the king's scale. Tell him there is no need to worry about me. Tell him that he must go forth and do what needs to be done." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
