Overview
Phantom Hourglass
Link performing a Spin Attack to hit four Shock Switches simultaneously
Considered to be one of Link's signature moves, the Spin Attack sees the young hero hold his Sword in a fighting stance, then rotating in a full circle as he slashes with it, striking everything around him in a range of 360 degrees or more. The attack typically deals greater damage than an ordinary Sword strike, and is useful for quickly disposing of whole groups of Enemies with a single move. In addition to being a strong offensive technique, the Spin Attack is sometimes used for solving puzzles within Dungeons; for instance, when several Shock Switches need to be activated simultaneously. It can also hasten the process of cutting Grass or Pots, and collecting any Items that they drop.
In most of its appearances, the Spin Attack must be "charged" by briefly holding the Sword button. While the blade is readied, Link can continue to move around, though at a reduced speed and always facing in the same direction. Additionally, in many of the games in which the Spin Attack appears, Link is able to upgrade the maneuver in some fashion during his quest.
A Link to the Past
The Spin Attack in A Link to the Past is a secret Sword technique used by the Knights of Hyrule, taught to Link by his Uncle when the young hero finds him injured in Hyrule Castle during the game's early scenes.[20] It is performed by holding the B button for approximately one second until the shine of the blade reaches its tip, then releasing the button. Link reaches back before swinging the blade forward, striking any Enemies behind him.
Link's Awakening
In Link's Awakening, the Spin Attack technique is available to Link as soon as he retrieves his Sword on Toronbo Shores. The knowledge of how to perform it has been inherited through the family of the hero through several generations.[17] It is performed by holding the button which the Sword is assigned to for approximately one second until the Sword flashes, then releasing the button.
Link's Awakening is the only game in which Link performs a backhanded Spin Attack by default, turning counterclockwise in this case. Link can use the Roc's Feather to jump while his Sword charges, allowing him to perform a Spin Attack midair.
Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, the Spin Attack can be performed as soon as Link receives his first Sword, though the attack's range is fairly limited with the Kokiri Sword he wields as a child.
One way to perform the attack is to hold the B button for a moment and then release it; after the initial slash, Link readies his Sword by holding it behind him. If he holds the Sword for at least two full seconds, then he will perform an elongated Spin Attack with two spins. The other way to perform the attack is to make a quick, full circle with the Control Stick in either direction, then press B at the end.
After Link visits the Great Fairy of Power and receives a Magic Meter, he gains the ability to power up the Spin Attack by charging it. This causes the attack to emit a magic whirl that extends its reach, at the expense of some of his Magic Meter. Charging the attack for two or more seconds creates an even larger whirl, but consumes more of his Magic Meter. Link will still be able to perform a non-magical Spin Attack by releasing the B button immediately as charging begins. Performing the Spin Attack by rotating the Control Stick will add the magical property without consuming any of his Magic Meter.
Majora's Mask
Majora's Mask 3D
Deku Link performing a Spin Attack
The Spin Attack in Majora's Mask behaves nearly identically to Ocarina of Time, with two minor differences. Link does not gain the magical Spin Attack ability upon receiving the Magic Meter during the first three-day cycle; this comes only after meeting the Great Fairy of Power by rescuing the 15 Stray Fairies from Snowhead Temple.[21][note 1] In addition, if Link performs the Spin Attack three times consecutively by rotating the Control Stick, the third Spin Attack will have a double rotation.
Deku Link can perform a version of the Spin Attack by simply pressing the A button.[22] He will stand on one foot and twirl 720 degrees, striking with the tip of his hat, which briefly hardens into a root. This Spin Attack can stun Enemies and break Objects such as Grass and Pots, but is rarely powerful enough to defeat at Enemy. If performed while running, Deku Link's movement speed will temporarily increase. In the original Majora's Mask, his hat does not transform during the attack, though he can use it to instantly reach top movement speed from standing still.
Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages
In Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, the Spin Attack is performed by holding the button which the Sword is assigned to for approximately one second until the Sword flashes, then releasing the button. Several of the Magic Rings in these games alter characteristics of the Spin Attack; the Charge Ring enables Link to charge up the Spin Attack in half of the time it normally takes,[23] while the Spin Ring causes Link to spin twice instead of once.[24] The Energy Ring causes Link to automatically shoot a Sword Beam instead of readying a Spin Attack once the Sword button has been held.[25] Link can use the Roc's Feather or the Roc's Cape to jump while his Sword charges, allowing him to perform a Spin Attack midair.
In Oracle of Seasons, the Spin Attack can be used as a "show of courage" to open the Maku Tree Gate.[26]
During the ending credits of a non-Linked Game of Oracle of Ages, Link is shown sword-training with Ralph, and attempts to teach him the Spin Attack. Ralph winds up losing control and inadvertently pulling off a Hurricane Spin.

The Wind Waker
In The Wind Waker, Link can once again use the Spin Attack from the time he receives the Hero's Sword from Orca, having learned the technique during Sword Training.[7] One way to perform the Spin Attack is to hold the B button for a moment as Link readies the Sword behind his back, then release the button. The other method is to rotate the Control Stick in a full circle in either direction, then press B at the end. In addition, when performing the Thrust attack four times in sequence, the fourth strike will be a Spin Attack.
Holding the B button until the Sword glows, then releasing it.
Quickly rotating the Control Stick in a full circle then pressing the B button.
Pressing the B button during or immediately after Rolling.
Pressing the B button four times quickly while holding the Control Stick in any direction.
While the Links are in the Cross Formation, they can perform a special Spin Attack where the four heroes all spin around the center of the Formation, making it extremely effective when surrounded by Enemies.[27] Once their Swords are filled with the Power to Repel Evil, executing a Spin Attack will also fire a Sword Beam.
In Twilight Princess, the Spin Attack can be performed as soon as Link receives the Wooden Sword from Rusl. The children of Ordon Village ask Link for a demonstration of his Sword skills, and will casually mentioning the controls for each maneuver, including the Spin Attack.[33]
In the Nintendo GameCube version, as well as Twilight Princess HD, Link can perform the Spin Attack either by pressing and holding the B button for a moment and then releasing it, or by quickly spinning the Control Stick in a full circle and pressing B at the end. For the first time in the series, the direction of the Spin Attack will match the direction that the Control Stick is spun.
Due to the Wii version utilizing motion controls for Sword strikes, it is not possible to charge a Spin Attack. Instead, it is performed instantly by shaking the Nunchuk from side to side, with the direction of the Spin Attack again matching its movement. After performing the attack in the Wii version, Link will have to wait approximately two seconds until his Sword shimmers before he can do it again.
Executing the Control Stick or Nunchuk motion while Link is performing a Jump Slash or a Backflip will allow him to unleash a Spin Attack immediately upon landing. The Spin Attack can also be performed while Link is riding on Epona, though he merely whirls the Sword above his head instead of fully spinning. When Link is in his Wolf form, the Spin Attack is changed to a quick, full-body spin that strikes with his outstretched tail. In the Wii version, Wolf Link's tail will shimmer after two seconds, as though it were a Sword.
One of the Hidden Skills Link can acquire is the Great Spin, which enhances the power and radius of the Spin Attack when he is at full health.
Phantom Hourglass
In Phantom Hourglass, the Spin Attack is taught by Oshus during Sword Training, and is performed by quickly drawing a circle around Link with the Stylus. Link will spin in the same direction as the circle. If the maneuver is performed four times in a row without resting, he will become dizzy and unable to move for several seconds.
In Spirit Tracks, the Spin Attack is taught by Russell during Sword Training, though he doesn't explain the controls unless Link asks him.[12] It is once again performed by quickly drawing a circle around Link with the Stylus.[35] Link will spin in the same direction as the circle. If the maneuver is performed four times in a row without resting, he will become dizzy and unable to move for several seconds.
The Spin Attack in Skyward Sword is taught by Eagus in the Sparring Hall,[13] and is performed by swinging both the left and right Joy-Cons at the same time.[37][note 2] Using the maneuver depletes a larger portion of Link's Stamina Wheel than ordinary Sword strikes. Link will spin in the direction the controllers are swung, which is crucial to the game's mechanics, as many Enemies have vulnerabilities or defenses against attacks from certain directions. Skyward Sword also introduces a vertical Spin Attack which sees Link quickly flip on the spot with his Sword outstretched, performed by swinging the controllers upward or downward.
Once Link gains the ability to perform Skyward Strikes, the charged gained from holding the Sword aloft can be used to amplify the Spin Attack, increasing its strength and radius.
A Link Between Worlds
The Spin Attack in A Link Between Worlds is performed by holding the B button for approximately one second until the shine of the blade reaches the Sword's hilt, then releasing it. As soon as the charging is complete, a faint circle appears to whirl around Link, indicating the range of the attack.
If Link manages to return all 100 of the Lost Maiamais to Mother Maiamai, she will reward the young hero by upgrading his Spin Attack to the Great Spin.
Tri Force Heroes
The Spin Attack in Tri Force Heroes is performed by holding the B button for approximately one second until the shine of the blade reaches the Sword's hilt, then releasing it. As soon as the charging is complete, a faint circle appears to whirl around Link, indicating the range of the attack. Once the Links have gathered, a Spin Attack can be performed by whichever one sits at the top of a Totem. This allows the Totem-carrier to move around while the attack is taking place, effectively increasing its range. If a Link is thrown by the one underneath him while he is holding a Spin Attack charged, then he will automatically perform the maneuver midair.
Several of the available Outfits can affect the Spin Attack in different ways. The Sword Suit, Sword Master Suit, and Fierce Deity Armor all double the strength of Link's Sword; the Sword Master Suit also increases its length and range, while the Fierce Deity Armor allows Link to shoot four Sword Beams in a cross formation whenever a Spin Attack is performed. The Spin Attack Attire increases the strength, range, and duration of the attack, similar to the Great Spin from A Link Between Worlds, and also renders Link invincible during the maneuver. Finally, the Dapper Spinner allows Link to perform a Spin Attack by quickly pressing the B button three times, hastening its execution.
Breath of the Wild
In Breath of the Wild, the Spin Attack can be performed with a One-Handed or Two-Handed Weapon by holding the attack button, but its execution changes depending on the Weapon used. With a One-Handed Weapon, the Spin Attack is identical to previous incarnations, being a single, powerful circular attack with a wide range. It can be charged longer for more power and range at the cost of more Stamina. With Two-Handed Weapons, Link does not charge the Spin Attack but instead begins spinning continuously shortly after the attack button is held. Link continues to spin until the attack button is released or until Link runs out of Stamina, at which point he finishes the attack with a powerful downward strike that can knock foes away. If Urbosa's Fury is unlocked and activated, Link will do his regular Spin Attack like normal, but he will summon a wide arc of Lightning around him to electrocute enemies nearby, similar to the Electrical attack used by Electric Lizalfos.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Spin Attack is Link, Young Link, and Toon Link's Up Special Move. It proves to be a powerful attack when used on the ground, and when used in the air, it serves as Link's third jump and thus help him recover from off-stage. It is not until its appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl that the Spin Attack can be charged while on the ground. Young Link and Toon Link's version of the Spin Attack is weaker than its adult Link counterpart; however, the younger Links' attack traps enemies in a cyclone of slashes and can draw in foes if they are relatively close to the Spin Attack's radius.

In SoulCalibur II, Link uses two variations of the Spin Attack. The first version acts much like the Hurricane Spin: Link can charge his sword to spin around several times, although this will not leave him dizzy like in other Zelda games. By completely charging the sword with the Spin Attack, a more powerful attack will be unleashed, demonstrated by the fire that surrounds Link's sword in the process. The second version, called the Cyclone Attack, causes Link to jump into the air while executing a Spin Attack. Like the previous variation, this attack can also be charged by the young hero, which will cause for Link to jump higher. The Spin Attack, when fully charged, causes 74 HP worth of damage while the Cyclone Attack deals 71 HP.

The Spin Attack serves as Link's Special Attack for the Hylian Sword and Master Sword Weapons in Hyrule Warriors. He raises his Sword to charge energy, much like when charging a Skyward Strike, then unleashes a powerful Spin Attack that spans a wide range. A shorter and less far-reaching Spin Attack can be used by pressing the Strong Attack button, where he does a single spin if using the Hylian Sword, or two spins when using the Master Sword. The button can be held down for a couple of seconds first for increased range and damage. His fourth combo also involves a Spin Attack which takes him into the air, and a Spin Attack similar to the Cyclone Attack can be used if the Strong Attack button is held down after any of his combos. He can move around while charging this attack, and although it is weaker and has less range than his other Spin Attacks, it is useful for causing extra damage to Captains, Warriors and Giant Bosses, depleting their Weak Point Gauge faster.
Toon Link can perform the Hurricane Spin as some of his combos and Special Attack for his Light Sword Weapon. The Special Attack variant causes him to briefly become dizzy, a reference to when he used the technique in The Wind Waker.

Spin Attacks in Cadence of Hyrule can be performed by Link. They damage any Enemies within the eight tiles around him and knock them away.[16] When used, one fourth of Link's Stamina Gauge will be depleted.[16]
