Disguises are recurring mechanics in The Legend of Zelda series.(BotWBreath of the Wild | TotKTears of the Kingdom)[1][2]

Overview

Disguises are used by Link to avoid detection among Enemies or hide his identity, allowing him to avoid combat or enter areas that he would not be allowed in otherwise.

Breath of the Wild

In Breath of the Wild, Link can wear a variety of Armors to Disguise himself. By wearing the full Gerudo Outfit, he can enter Gerudo Town without being thrown out. Once he obtains the Thunder Helm, the Sand Boots, or the Snow Boots, he can wear them in place of the Gerudo Veil and Gerudo Sirwal while maintaining the effects of the Disguise.

Link can also wear Armor with a Disguise Added Effect or Set Bonus to remain hidden among different types of Enemies, preventing them from attacking him unless he attacks them first. Enemies affected by Link's Disguise will follow him around and study him, making it difficult to perform Sneakstrikes on them. If an Enemy that is not affected by Link's Disguise begins to attack him, Enemies that were fooled by the Disguise will see through it and attack him as well. While using certain Disguise Effects, Link adopts a new idle pose to mimic the Enemy he is disguised as.

Tears of the Kingdom

Much like in Breath of the Wild, Link can wear different Armors to disguise himself. The Gerudo Outfit is no longer available, but Link can now obtain and wear the Yiga Clan Attire to infiltrate the Yiga Clan Hideout and other strongholds of the Yiga Clan. Once he obtains the Lightning Helm, Link can use it in place of the Yiga Mask without revealing his identity. Many friendly characters will chide Link's poor taste if he wears the Yiga Mask around them, and wearing it within Gerudo Town will result in Link being locked up in the local Jail until he takes it off.[5][6] Yiga Footsoldiers and Yiga Blademasters will not immediately attack Link while he is wearing this Disguise, but Master Kohga is not fooled by it.[7][8][9][10]

Link can wear Armor with a Disguise Added Effect or Set Bonus to prevent certain types of Enemies from attacking him. Disguise Effects will end early if Link attacks an Enemy, or if an Enemy not fooled by the Disguise starts to attack Link. In addition to the special idle poses available in Breath of the Wild, Link has a new idle pose while wearing the Horriblin Mask.
