The Dog Race 500 is a Mini-Game in Majora's Mask.[1]

Location and Rules

The Dog Race 500 is a betting Mini-Game that takes place at the Doggy Racetrack in Romani Ranch from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.[2] To play, Link must speak to Mamamu Yan at the starting line, who instructs him to pick out one of the 14 Dogs from the corral and bring it back to her.[3] She then explains the rules: If the chosen Dog wins first place, Link wins triple his bet; second place wins double his bet; third through fifth place, he breaks even and wins the amount that he bet; any lower placement and Link loses his bet.[4] Link then selects any multiple of 10 Rupees to bet, up to a maximum of 90 Rupees, and the Dog Race 500 begins. The Dogs are shown racing around the track from several dramatic camera angles, without any input from the player. Once they have all crossed the finish line, Mamamu Yan awards Link any winnings. If his winnings total 150 Rupees or more, he will also be awarded a Piece of Heart.[5]

While the outcome of the Dog Race 500 is largely random, Link can tip the odds in his favor by wearing the Mask of Truth while choosing a Dog, allowing him to read the thoughts and mood of any Dog he picks up. Those with the most positive outlooks begin their thoughts with "Ruff!"; these Dogs are most likely to finish in the top five. Dogs with ordinary moods begin their thoughts with "Rrr-ruff!" and will finish around the middle of the pack, while those who feel unwell begin their thoughts with "Hoo-whine." and will finish among the last places. The gold-colored Dog is weighted as more likely to do well, as long as his mood is good, while the blue Dog is more likely place poorly in the race. All other colors appear to have little-to-no effect on a Dog's placement.

Link will not be able to participate in the Dog Race 500 if he is wearing any of the Transformation Masks. Mamamu Yan will warn him that the Dogs would be too afraid of Goron Link,[6] that they would be too attracted to Zora Link,[7] or that they would have less-than-friendly ideas about Deku Link.[8]

Trivia

  • The name is a likely reference to 500-mile automobile races such as the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500. The length of the Doggy Racetrack appears closer to 500 feet.
