Features and Overview

Breath of the Wild

East Reservoir Lake is located in the Lanayru Great Spring, which is part of the Lanayru Region of Hyrule Kingdom. Its southern end is secured by the Rutala Dam, and it feeds Water into both the Zora River and the Rutala River. Before Divine Beast Vah Ruta is calmed, its Rain will constantly fall over East Reservoir Lake.[3]

Every 10 years, Lanayru faces heavy Rainfall that would previously wash away the Zora of Zora's Domain.[4] During the Era of Prosperity 10,000 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, the Zora and the Hylians joined forces to create East Reservoir Lake in a single year, which would protect Hyrule Kingdom from floods.[5][6] Ever since then, the Zora kings have maintained the promise to manage its Water level, making East Reservoir Lake a symbol of the bond between Zora's Domain and the rest of Hyrule.[7] The Zora have appointed monitors to alert their king if the Water ever exceeds acceptable levels.[8]

When Divine Beast Vah Ruta was reactivated following the second Great Calamity, it took up residence in East Reservoir Lake. Its ability to generate Water caused heavy Rain to fill up the Lake.[3][9] King Dorephan began to fear that it would soon burst, which would put the lives of the Zora and the Hylians downstream of the Lake in danger.[10] As a result, Sidon left Zora's Domain in search of a Hylian to help them.[11]

During the "Divine Beast Vah Ruta" Main Quest, Sidon tells Link to meet him at East Reservoir Lake once he has gathered at least 20 Shock Arrows.[12][13] Once Link arrives, Sidon will ensure that he is prepared before they face Divine Beast Vah Ruta.[14] When Link confirms that he is ready, the pair of them will jump into the Lake to begin their attack on the Divine Beast.[15]

After Link has halted the flow of Water from Divine Beast Vah Ruta, it will remain dormant in East Reservoir Lake until it is reclaimed. Once this has been done, Mipha will pilot the Divine Beast out of the Lake through the Rutala Dam.

The northern dam of East Reservoir Lake has bedroom that is intended for visitors to use.[16] It includes a Bed and Jars. It also houses a Treasure Chest that contains a Knight's Shield.

As part of the "Regulating the Reservoir" Quest, it is revealed that the Zora have been using Divine Beast Vah Ruta to manage the Water levels of East Reservoir Lake.[17] When the Warriors bring provisions to the workers, they are able to finish work on the Reservoir earlier than anticipated, allowing them time to upgrade the Divine Beast.[18]
