In Breath of the Wild, Essences include Heart Containers and Stamina Vessels. Link can obtain either by spending four Spirit Orbs at a Goddess Statue.[3] Heart Containers can also be obtained by defeating Waterblight Ganon, Fireblight Ganon, Windblight Ganon, and Thunderblight Ganon. Excluding Link's intial Heart Containers and Stamina Vessels, a total of 34 Essences can be acquired in Breath of the Wild. In The Champions' Ballad Downloadable Content pack, one additional Essence is available from completing the four Ancient Shrines added to the Great Plateau and obtaining their Spirit Orbs. Link can have a maximum of 30 Heart Containers and 15 Stamina Vessels in Breath of the Wild, though he cannot normally have both at the same time.
Link can speak with the Horned Statue at Hateno Village to sell each of his Essences for 100 Rupees each. He may then buy his Essences back at 120 Rupees apiece, allowing him to exchange a Heart Container for a Stamina Vessel or vice versa for 20 Rupees. The initial trade that takes place as part of the Side Quest "The Statue's Bargain" does not cost any Rupees. The Horned Statue cannot reduce Link's Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels below their minimums, nor can he increase them beyond their respective maximums.[4][5][6][7]

In Tears of the Kingdom, Essences are nearly identical to their appearance in Breath of the Wild. At the start of Tears of the Kingdom, Link has 30 Hearts and three Stamina Wheels. However, they are destroyed by Ganondorf's Gloom and reduced to their minimums during the events of "The Awakening", requiring him to obtain Lights of Blessing and defeat Bosses to regain his Heart Containers and Stamina Vessels. Link can spend four Lights of Blessing at any Goddess Statue to acquire either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.[8] During the Main Quest "Find Princess Zelda", Link is required to obtain a fourth Heart Container in order to open the Challenge Door in the Temple of Time. In Tears of the Kingdom, the total Essences that Link can acquire has been increased to 45, and Link's maximum Heart Containers have been increased to 40.
Link can again speak with the Horned Statue, now located in the Royal Hidden Passage, to sell and buy back his Essences for 100 Rupees and 120 Rupees respectively. The trade made during "A Deal With the Statue" does not cost any Rupees. The Horned Statue cannot reduce Link's Essence below their minimum values, nor can he increase them beyond their maximum values.[9][10][11][12]
Trivia
- Through the use of several glitches in Breath of the Wild, Essences stored with the Horned Statue can be transferred across saves. This allows Link to reach the maximum possibles amount of Heart Containers and Stamina Vessels at the same time, which is not possible via normal gameplay.
