By pledging his allegiance to the Dark Lord Ganondorf, Zant is granted access to an Evil Magic. He uses this power to transform the Twili into Shadow Beasts, Midna into an imp, Link into Wolf Link, and to engulf most of Hyrule in Twilight.

Shadow Crystals are created with Zant's Evil Magic.
