The First Encounter is an event in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

The First Encounter was the first Gibdo attack on Gerudo Town following the start of the Upheaval. After the Sand Shroud began, the Gerudo Soldiers dispatched patrols to discern its cause, at which point they were attacked by Gibdos.[2] The Soldiers were outmatched by the Gibdos, and the residents of Gerudo Town were forced to retreat underground to the Gerudo Shelter.[3][4] Using her Power of Lightning, Riju was able to defeat many of the Gibdos, though she was unable to aim toward them accurately.[5][6]

By the time of Link's arrival to the Gerudo Shelter, many of those who fought the Gibdos are still recovering.[7] As a result of this, Liana began training the Sword Troops, who will wield both swords and Shields in order to better protect themselves.[8]

  6. Things grow more and more dire across Hyrule, and now the danger has come here as well.

A sand shroud, the worst sandstorm in recent memory, has covered the area. People are taking shelter underground.

We traveled out to see if we could discern the cause of it, but we were ambushed by new monsters called Gibdos.

To make matters worse, I wasn't able to accurately hit them with the lightning I can call down...

We're inundated with those seeking safety from the sand shroud or the Gibdos, and we still don't know what has caused this.

As the chief of Gerudo Town, I am to blame for these failures...

  8. [What's the new unit?] Well, the Gibdos did a serious number on us before. It was so bad that some of the guards who fought in the first encounter are still recovering from their wounds. I believe that partly has to do with how hard it is to protect yourself while using a spear. Both hands are full, you see. So I've established a new unit that will use a sword and shield instead. They can better guard themselves that way. — Liana (Tears of the Kingdom)
