Gloom Spawn
Gloom Spawn are Enemies in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]
Characteristics
Gloom Spawn consist of a group of long, corpse-like arms, resembling the arms of the mummified Demon King Ganondorf. Each hand has an eye on its palm, and the group is surrounded by a moving patch of Gloom. Gloom Spawn appear in fixed locations across Hyrule's Surface and Depths, remaining hidden until Link approaches their spawn location. Once Link is nearby, they will appear and begin to patrol the area.[2] If they spot Link or are struck, they will shriek and begin pursuing him. The moving Gloom patch drains Link's maximum Hearts on contact, and if he is grabbed by a hand, it will continue to drain his life until he is able to escape its grasp.[3] Unlike the attacks from Gloom-Wreathed Enemies, damage from Gloom Spawn can be blocked with the Gloom Resistance Added Effect.
Gloom Spawn will pursue and surround Link quickly, making escape difficult. Gloom Spawn cannot climb up sheer walls, making Climbing out of their reach an effective escape strategy. The hands will be temporarily stunned if set on fire, including from explosions. Bomb Flowers and other explosives are effective tools against them, particularly from high vantage points, as each hand can be damaged by the area of effect. They can also be frozen, shocked, or stunned with Dazzlefruits. The hands will temporarily go limp if struck in the eyes by an Arrow. Gloom Spawn do not hear any noise Link makes, which means that sprinting and whistling will not catch their attention. They are not affected by Majora's Mask's Disguise.
If Link does not defeat all the hands quickly enough, the defeated hands will re-emerge from the Gloom at half of their maximum health until every hand is defeated. Once defeated, Gloom Spawn will coalesce and transform into a Phantom Ganon. Unlike Phantom Ganon, Gloom Spawn do not drop any Items and do not appear in the Hyrule Compendium. However, they can be detected by the Sensor + if it is set to track Phantom Ganon. The Master Sword does not awaken in the presence of Gloom Spawn.
When Gloom Spawn or Phantom Ganon appear, all other Enemies in the vicinity will vanish until they either dissipate or Phantom Ganon is defeated. If they cannot reach Link for a certain amount of time, most Gloom Spawn will dissipate into several Dark Clumps without transforming into Phantom Ganon. However, some Gloom Spawn, such as the one found at the bottom of the Deku Tree Chasm, will never wither away on their own. If a Gloom Spawn dissipates, it will not appear again until the next Blood Moon. Some instances of Gloom Spawn are set only to appear if a "random" flag is set, which is randomized when their spawn point is loaded in.[4] Some of these "random" Gloom Spawn are grouped within a general area, such as three at the Great Cliffs or two at Seres Scablands, allowing one of them to spawn at any given time.
Trivia
- If Link is on the Surface when attacked by Gloom Spawn, the sky will turn red similar to when the Blood Moon rises, making the world seem as if it is nighttime. This results in related oddities or behavior, such as making Luminous Stone glow even if it is daytime.
Nomenclature
The English translation uses the word "gloom", meaning to be dispirited or dark, in reference to the after effect of the Gloom Spawn's ability to drain life from its victims. The original Japanese translation refers to it as a "Miasma Demon". A miasma is a foul or unpleasant stench, in reference to the decaying of Ganondorf's body after he was sealed during the Imprisoning War.
