Gloom Spawn are Enemies in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Characteristics

Gloom Spawn consists of a group of long, corpse-like arms, resembling the arms of the mummified Demon King Ganondorf. Each hand has an eye on its palm. They appear in fixed locations and are hidden until Link gets close enough. If Link is nearby, they suddenly appear from a patch of Gloom after a few seconds and begin to search the area.[2] If they spot Link or are struck, they will shriek and begin pursuing him. The moving Gloom patch drains Link's maximum Hearts on contact, and when a hand grabs Link, it will continually drain him until he is able to escape its grasp.[3]

Gloom Spawn will pursue and surround Link quickly, making escape difficult. Climbing out of the hands' reach is an effective strategy as Gloom Spawn cannot climb up walls. The hands will be temporarily stunned if set on fire, including from explosions. This makes Bomb Flowers and other explosives effective tools against them, particularly from high vantage points. They can also be frozen, shocked, or stunned with Dazzlefruits. The hands will temporarily go limp if struck in the eyes. Gloom Spawn do not hear any noise Link makes, which means that sprinting and whistling will not catch their attention. They are immune to the effects of Majora's Mask.

If Link does not defeat all the hands quickly enough, they will re-emerge from the Gloom with half of their health restored until every hand is defeated. Upon defeat, the Gloom will coalesce and transform into a Phantom Ganon. Unlike Phantom Ganon, Gloom Spawn do not drop any Items and do not appear in the Hyrule Compendium. However, tracking Phantom Ganon on the Sheikah Sensor will be able to track Gloom Spawn. The Master Sword does not awaken in the presence of Gloom Spawn.

When Gloom Spawn or Phantom Ganon appear, all other Enemies in the vicinity will vanish until they either dissipate or Phantom Ganon is defeated. If they cannot reach Link for a certain amount of time, the Gloom Spawn will dissipate into several Dark Clumps without transforming into Phantom Ganon. However, not every instance of the Gloom Spawn does this, like the one found at the bottom of the Deku Tree Chasm. If they dissipate, it counts as a kill as they no longer reappear until the next Blood Moon. Some instances of Gloom Spawn are set only to appear if a "random" flag is set, which is randomized when their spawn point is loaded in.[4] Some of these "random" Gloom Spawn are in slightly different positions in the same general location, such as three at the Great Cliffs or two at Seres Scablands.

Trivia

  • If Link is on the Surface when attacked by Gloom Spawn, the sky will turn red similar to when the Blood Moon rises, making the world seem as if it is nighttime. This results in related oddities or behavior, such as making Luminous Stone glow even if it is daytime.
  • The sound sound effects used by Gloom Spawn consist of high-pitched shrieks and laughter.

Nomenclature

The English translation uses the word "gloom", meaning to be dispirited or dark, in reference to the after effect of the Gloom Spawn's ability to drain life from its victims. The original Japanese translation refers to it as a "Miasma Demon". A miasma is a foul or unpleasant stench, in reference to the decaying of Ganondorf's body after he was sealed during the Imprisoning War.
