The Helm Splitter is a recurring ability in The Legend of Zelda series.[3] It goes unnamed in The Wind Waker.

Overview

The Helm Splitter is a sword ability which sees Link jump high above an opponent's head and perform a forward flip with his Sword outstretched, striking the foe in the head, then landing behind them. The skill is most effective against Enemies with helmets or other protective headgear, such as Darknuts.

The Wind Waker

The Helm Splitter is one of two common Parry Attacks in The Wind Waker; the other being the Back Slice. Pressing the A button just before a Targeted Enemy attempts a horizontal strike, Link will perform the entire motion of the Helm Splitter, dealing twice the damage of a regular Sword strike. Though the Helm Splitter typically knocks down an Enemy hit by it, performing the move on a Darknut will destroy its helmet, leaving the foe momentarily confused and vulnerable to further attacks to its head.

Twilight Princess

The Helm Splitter is the fourth of the Hidden Skills taught by the Hero's Spirit. Link can learn this Hidden Skill by first finding a Howling Stone outside of the Sacred Grove.[4] After awakening the White Wolf and howling with him, the White Wolf instructs Link to find him while in human form, marks the location of where he can be found on Link's Map.[5] Once Link returns to human form, he can find the White Wolf waiting at the southern edge of Hyrule Castle Town, westEast on the Wii Version of the stairs. Approaching the White Wolf will return Link to the clouded area where the Hero's Spirit can teach him the Helm Splitter.

The move is initiated by a Shield Attack to stun the Enemy, then attacking again by pressing the A button.[6] After performing the Helm Splitter, Link will land behind his opponent, giving him a chance to continue attacking the foe from behind. This skill proves useful when the Enemy is too fast to successfully land a Back Slice on.[2]
