Location and Uses

Spirit Tracks

Main article: Beedle's Air Shop

Beedle operates his Air Shop out of a Hot-Air Balloon.[2] When Link spots the Balloon while riding the Spirit Train along the Spirit Tracks, he can signal to Beedle with his Train Whistle.[3] This causes Beedle to land his Hot-Air Balloon, allowing Link to access his Shop.

Tears of the Kingdom

Hot-Air Balloons are made by attaching a Balloon to the top of a Basket. Alternatively, they can also be made by connecting a Balloon and a piece of Wood to a platform, such as a Stone Slab or a Lattice.[4] When burning Wood or an active Flame Emitter is placed under the Balloon, the Basket will be lifted upward. The Schema Stone for the Hot-Air Balloon Schematic is given to Link by Josha as a reward for completing the Side Adventure "A Mystery in the Depths".[5] It costs six Zonaite to create a Hot-Air Balloon with Autobuild when neither of the building supplies are present.

A Hot-Air Balloon chained to the ground

Several Hot-Air Balloons can be found throughout Hyrule. These Balloons are often chained to the ground, leaving them unable to be used by Link. Hudson Construction produces Hot-Air Balloons for the Zonai Survey Team at their Workshop.[6] Several of these Balloons can be found in the Kakariko Village Graveyard. During the Side Adventure "Camera Work in the Depths", Link finds Ponnick with his Hot-Air Balloon below the Hyrule Field Chasm, which he used to safely reach the Central Hyrule Depths with Robbie. Afterwards, it can be found chained near the Chasm on the Surface. Later on, while the Side Adventure "Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan" is ongoing, Link can find Ponnick with his Hot-Air Balloon above the Rito Village Chasm. The Yiga also utilize Hot-Air Balloons, as several can be found chained beneath the Yiga Clan Hideout Chasm. In the Voice Memory "Master Kohga's Education, Part ④", Master Kohga creates a Hot-Air Balloon with a Fan instead of a source of Fire, which allows him to return to the Surface.[7]

Impa owns a Hot-Air Balloon given to her by Purah, which she uses to travel throughout Hyrule. However, it was broken when she attempted to investigate the Geoglyph on the North Hyrule Plain.[8] During the Main Quest "Impa and the Geoglyphs", Link is able to repair the Hot-Air Balloon by using Ultrahand, and Impa invites him to view the Geoglyph from the Sky with her.[9] Once "The Dragon's Tears" begins, Impa and Cado take her Hot-Air Balloon with them on their journey to visit the Geoglyphs.

Robbie is also in possession of a Hot-Air Balloon, though it will initially be broken in Lookout Landing.[10] During "A Mystery in the Depths", Josha asks Link to repair it to demonstrate his new Autobuild ability.[11] Once his Hot-Air Balloon is restored, Robbie is able to depart Lookout Landing for the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.[12] From this point on, his Balloon can be found chained outside of the Lab.

During the Side Adventure "Mattison's Independence", Hudson decides to make a unique Hot-Air Balloon for his daughter Mattison, known as the Sun Balloon.[13]

Echoes of Wisdom

Condé's older brother is an adventurer who travels using a Hot-Air Balloon. On his latest journey, he launched his Hot-Air Balloon from the peak of Hebra Mountain with the goal of reaching Holy Mount Lanayru.[14] After taking a break on Holy Mount Lanayru, he launched his Balloon again and continued exploring the world.[15] During the Credits, Condé can be seen celebrating as his brother's Balloon approaches Hebra Mountain.

Other Appearances

Age of Imprisonment

Hot-Air Balloons as they appeared in Tears of the Kingdom are featured in Age of Imprisonment. They can be seen at Camps, both those that the Warriors gather at before departing for a Scenario or Challenge and those that are established during a Scenario.

During the Movie "Into the Depths", which plays at the beginning of the Scenario "Where Ancient Wisdom Sleeps", Zelda, Rauru, Mineru, and a pair of Hylian Soldiers use a Hot-Air Balloon to descend into the Faron Grasslands Depths. Following this, the Hot-Air Balloon can be seen at the beginning of the Tobio's Hollow Stage.

As part of the Quest "To Fly Ever Higher", Lenalia hears of a Hylian Soldier who has become stranded after the Flame Emitter powering his Hot-Air Balloon ran out of power.[16] When she provides him with Flint to make a Fire, he is able to continue his journey up a series of cliffs.[17]

The pictures in that book from the graveyard were very, very clear. These things all attach in different ways to make something else! 8. I noticed this geoglyph from a distance while I was standing on high ground. Examining it up close, I could not make out what it depicted. I thought I might have a better view from up in the sky. I took to the air in the balloon Purah gave me, but then, alas... The wind struck and completely sheared the balloon off the base. — Impa (Tears of the Kingdom)
  9. Oh! You fixed my balloon? Thank you, Link! Will you come with me to look at the geoglyph, then? — Impa (Tears of the Kingdom)

  12. I really appreciate you fixing up my balloon. Ultra thanks! That "Autobuild" thing is pretty darn amazing. Hmm, I should have a good think about all the practical uses of that someday. Oh! That reminds me... Hey, you! Listen up! Now that Josha has solved the mystery of that slate... I can return to the Purah Pad Laboratory in Hateno Village! — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. Oh, it's you. So, you know, I've been doing a lot of thinking... Trying to figure out what I could possibly do for Mattison. And, well, what I came up with is this. Gerudo Town is pretty far from here, and there are plenty of monsters along the way. So, I thought I'd make Mattison her own special air balloon! But...I want to make it really special. Something just for her. I'm just...not sure how to do that. — Hudson (Tears of the Kingdom)

"I'm going on this adventure alone. Dad thinks I'm ready to take over his work this time. "My dear little brother Condé is in good hands with Dad back home. He'll be looked after. "I'm anxious about going out exploring the world by myself, but adventure calls! "I can't wait to bring Condé with me someday. He'll love it. It'll be even more fun. "Now, onward for more exploration!" — Painting (Echoes of Wisdom)
