Joute
Joute is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]
Biography
Breath of the Wild
Joute is a Hylian who travels with his Horse between Dueling Peaks Stable and Hateno Village. He carries a Wooden Shield and a Traveler's Sword. At both of his stops, he momentarily rests under a Tree before continuing his journey. If it Rains, he will seek shelter near Fort Hateno or the Equestrian Riding Course.
Joute likes Horses more than he does people.[3] In particular, he holds much affection for his Horse, referring to him as his "best horsey."[4] He keeps track of his hunger as they travel together,[5] and he makes remarks about needing to buff his Saddle.[6] During the night, he is happy to be able to see the stars with his Horse.[7] When it is Raining, Joute will inform Link that both he and his Horse dislike such Weather, so he tries to avoid it when he can.[8][9][10]
As he travels, Joute will have many Horse facts to share with Link, even if Link does not care to hear them.[11][12][13][14] He tells Link that the secret to holding on to a Horse is to approach it from behind quietly and hop on quick.[15] He recommends petting the Horse after getting on them "to let them know you care."[16] If Link does catch a wild Horse, Joute to register it at a Stable, as they will give him a Saddle and Bridle.[17] He also claims that Horses like Carrots and suggests buying them at Kakariko Village.[18]
Joute informs Link that Horses vary in the speed and power, so it is important for him to keep their strength in mind.[19] He suggests that Link choose a Horse that suits his own needs.[20] Since Horses will get tired if they run all the time, Joute advises Link to an eye on his Horse to make sure it is alright.[21][22]
Joute has a song to describe the different types of legendary Horses, the lyrics of which encourage the listener to go catch them.[23] Though he describes it at slightly inaccurate, he believes it is a catchy tune.[24] In order to make it work as a musical, he had to make it seems as though there were multiple of each legendary Horse.[25]
In general, Joute cares more about Horses than any local attractions.[26] However, he does tell Link about the Equestrian Riding Course, which is in ruins.[27][28] While it was once an important location, it is now suffering from an infestation of monsters.[29][30]
Joute will share that Horses are not the only Animals that will allow someone to ride them.[31] While he does not think it would be worth it to ride anything else, he believes Link may be interested.[32] He encourages Link to try to ride any Animal that looks mountable.[33]
