Koume
Ganondorf's surrogate mother. Sorceress of Flame. She seems vulnerable to low temperatures.

Koume, along with her sister, Kotake, are twin Gerudo witches who possess Fire and Ice powers, respectively. Koume and Kotake collectively have the power to combine to form Twinrova, a witch with both Fire and Ice powers. Because of her fire-based powers, Koume is weak to Kotake's ice powers, a property that is transferred to Twinrova upon their fusion.[1]

Together, Koume and Kotake acted as surrogate mothers for Ganondorf,[2] raising him to be evil in the hopes of fostering his role as the Demon King, Ganon.[9] Koume and Kotake operated in secret, using the Spirit Temple as a hideout.[10] Nabooru learned of this and attempted to enter the Spirit Temple to steal their treasure and potentially thwart their plans.[10] Because of the small passages in the Spirit Temple, Nabooru is unable to navigate it and so enlists Link's aid to steal the Silver Gauntlets from within.[10] However, as Link retrieves the Gauntlets, Koume and Kotake discover Nabooru and capture her with the intent of brainwashing her with their evil Magic.[11][12]

When Link reenters the Spirit Temple seven years later, he is greeted by Koume and Kotake, who force him to battle an Iron Knuckle as punishment for intruding upon their hideout.[13] After defeating the Iron Knuckle, it is revealed that Koume and Kotake outfitted Nabooru with Iron Knuckle armor and forced her to defend the Spirit Temple against her will.[14] After Nabooru comes to her senses, Koume and Kotake decide to brainwash her once more and magically transport her elsewhere.[15] They then retreat deeper into the Spirit Temple, waiting for Link to follow them.

Koume and Kotake mock Link as he enters the Spirit Temple's boss chamber, claiming that he is there to offer himself as a sacrifice for Ganondorf.[16] Prior to their fight with Link, Koume swears to burn Link to the bone.[17] After Link deals enough damage to the duo, Koume tells her sister that it is time to get serious,[18] prompting them to launch their Double Dynamite Attack, fusing into Twinrova.[19]

When Link defeats Twinrova, Koume and Kotake separate, resolving to come at Link more seriously.[20] However, Kotake notices a halo floating above Koume's head,[21] leading to an argument between the two as they both float toward the sky.[21] Before they disappear completely, Koume and Kotake threaten to return and haunt Link from beyond the grave.[22]

Koume is the Terminan counterpart of the Koume from Hyrule in Majora's Mask. Koume resides in the Southern Swamp with her sister, Kotake. At some point prior to Link's arrival, Koume was attacked by the Skull Kid while she was picking Mushrooms in the Woods of Mystery. She was left there, injured and unable to return home.[23][24] Upon seeing Link inside the Woods, she will ask him to give her something to restore her energy.[25][26] However, if Link tries to speak to Koume in the Woods of Mystery as a Deku, Goron, or Zora, Koume will instead pretend to be dead.[27][28]

If Link does not have a Bottle with a Red Potion in it, she will begrudge the fact that he is of no help to her.[29] Link can return to Kotake with news of her sister's whereabouts to obtain a Bottle containing a Red Potion, intended to be given to Koume.[30] Upon giving her a Red Potion, Koume recognizes it as Kotake's work and hastily drinks it.[31] After drinking the Potion, Koume's energy will return to her and she will offer Link a free ride in the Boat Cruise as thanks for saving her.[32]

At the Swamp Tourist Center, Koume reiterates her offer for a free Boat Cruise ride and, if Link does not have a Pictograph Box, gifts one to him as part of a promotion put on by the Tourist Center.[33] Prior to taking Link out on the Boat Cruise, Koume also informs Link that he can take a Pictograph taken with his Pictograph Box to the Swamp Tourist Center Guide for a prize.[34] In Majora's Mask 3D, Koume will warn Link that the Boat will be ramming into the Big Octo blocking the Boat's path.[35] Koume "accompanies" Link throughout the Boat Cruise and offers departures at the Deku Palace.[36] If Link completes the Boat Cruise, Koume will welcome him back to the Swamp Tourist Center and invite him to return if he wants to ride again.[37] Link can purchase Tickets from Koume for 50 Rupees for adults and 10 Rupees for children.[38] Koume will not sell Tickets to anyone other than Humans.[39]

After Link clears the Swamp of its poison, Koume can be spoken to again the Swamp Tourist Center, where she will offer Link a chance to play Koume's Target Shooting.[40]

Oracle of Seasons

Alongside Kotake, Koume plots to revive Ganon from within the Room of Rites. They order Onox to kidnap the Oracle of Seasons, Din, in order to offset the balance of the Seasons. As a result, the land of Holodrum is thrown into a destructive chaos, creating the conditions for Twinrova to light the Flame of Destruction.[41]

With the help of Holodrum's Maku Tree, Link is able to amass the Essences of Nature and defeat Onox, who has since transformed into the Dark Dragon. In his final moments, he laughs at Link's futility, noting that the Flame of Destruction has already been lit, heralding Holodrum's doom.[42] Koume and Kotake watch on through the Flame of Destruction from the Room of Rites, laughing that their wish will be granted thanks to Onox's efforts.[43]

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

After Onox is defeated in a Linked Game, Din speaks to Link, explaining that Koume and Kotake summoned Onox and Veran to disrupt the balance of the Seasons and Time in order to light the Flames of Destruction and Sorrow.[44] Furthermore, she warns Link that they have also kidnapped Princess Zelda to light the Flame of Despair from the people of Hyrule.[44] She urges Link to go to Zelda's side and save her from the twin witches.[44]

As Koume and Kotake light the Flame of Despair over Princess Zelda's unconscious body,[45] Din and Nayru transport Link to the Room of Rites. When Link arrives to the altar where Zelda is being kept, Twinrova teleport Link away to a separate room to do battle with him.[46] During the battle, Koume and Kotake fuse together to form Twinrova as a singular body with Fire and Ice powers,[47] vowing to sacrifice Link to Ganon.[48] However, when they lose to Link in their fused form before they can complete their ritual to sacrifice Princess Zelda, they decide to offer their own body as a vessel for Ganon's return.[49]

Oracle of Ages

A sprite of Koume from The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages.

After Onox falls to Link's hand at the end of Oracle of Seasons, Koume and Kotake call to him and assure him his actions were successful in lighting the Flame of Destruction necessary for their rite to resurrect Ganon.[50] To further their plan, they summon Veran to possess the body of the Oracle of Ages, Nayru. With control over Nayru's body, Veran is sent to wreak havok through time to ignite the Flame of Sorrow, the second flame in the Room of Rites.

After Link obtains the Echoing Howl from the Moonlit Grotto, Princess Zelda comes to visit Lynna City.[51] However, before she can be received, she is kidnapped by Vire, a servant of Onox.[51] Vire takes Zelda to the Black Tower, where Link rescues her. Zelda explains that she came to Labrynna because she had a premonition of sorrow and despair filling the world.[52] She pleads to Link for him to stop Veran before fleeing with Impa to Nayru's House.[52]

When the Maku Tree of Labrynna grants Link the Huge Maku Seed, they are interrupted by Koume and Kotake, who gloat that Link's actions are in vain as Veran continues to disrupt Time.[53][54] Later, as Link approaches Veran in the Black Tower, Twinrova are able to light the Flame of Sorrow thanks to Veran's deeds.[55][56]

While Link is able to defeat Veran atop the Black Tower and undo the temporal damage she caused, Koume and Kotake kidnap Princess Zelda as she is helping the citizens of Labrynna.[57][58] They do this in order to fill the hearts of the people with despair to ignite the eponymous Flame of Despair.[59][60] The two return to the Room of Rites and place Zelda's unconscious body upon an altar as the Flame of Despair begins to burn.[61] They then begin their Dark Rites to call forth Ganon, using Zelda's body as a vessel.[61]

Nayru and Din join forces to aid Link in reaching the Room of Rites.[62] However, before Link can retrieve Zelda's body from the altar, Koume and Kotake transport him to another room to battle him and stall for time.[63] Koume and Kotake are forced to fuse together into Twinrova in an attempt to stop Link,[64] leading to them resolving to sacrifice Link to Ganon.[65]

Link is able to defeat their merged form and thwart their attempt to sacrifice Zelda. In their desperation, Twinrova decide to sacrifice themselves as a host for Ganon's resurrection.[66] Despite their efforts, their body is an unsuitable vessel for Ganon, and so his resurrection is imperfect.[67] As a result, Ganon is only resurrected in body, without a competent mind in control.[67]

Tears of the Kingdom

Koume appears in the Memory "The Gerudo Assault" where she flanks Ganondorf alongside Kotake. She wears a gold Mask that hides her face and an identical outfit to Kotake's, though her collar displays her own name and she bears red accents in contrast to Kotake's teal. A red jewel sits on the Mask's forehead. Like Ganondorf, she and Kotake have green-colored skin. Her hair is braided to form the Crest of the Gerudo, a symbol of a cobra.

Koume joins Ganondorf and Kotake in the Memory "A Show of Fealty", where Ganondorf falsely swears his loyalty to Rauru in the Ancient Hyrule Castle's Audience Chamber. She is not seen again after this.

Other Appearances

Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

Koume appears alongside her sister, Kotake, in Ganon's Castle in "Shadow Guide: Sheik". Following Ingo's failure at Lon Lon Ranch, Koume and Kotake brainwash him into doing Ganondorf's bidding.[68] Koume commands Ingo to betray the Hero of Time.[69] At Lon Lon Ranch, Sheik explains to Link that Ingo has been brainwashed by the Twinrova, twins who raised Ganondorf and specialize in brainwashing people.[70] When Link frees Ingo of his brainwashing, Koume and Kotake command a group of Gerudo Soldiers to capture Link, though Link is able to escape with Malon and Ingo atop Epona's back[71]

In "The Haunted Wasteland", Koume and Kotake disguise themselves as soothsayers who instruct Link to visit the Spirit Temple to find his destiny.[72][73]

One Link leaves, Koume tells Sheik to prove his fealty to Ganondorf by following and capturing Link.[74] She also tasks Nabooru with spying on Sheik to discover whether he is a traitor.[75] With the help of a Gerudo troop, Sheik manages to capture Link. However, this is a ploy on his part to help Link free Nabooru from Koume and Kotake's mind control and to attack the twin witches. Though Nabooru is freed, Koume and Kotake escape and Sheik is gravely wounded in the process.[76]

In "A Fated Reunion", Link continues toward the Spirit Temple with the injured Sheik. There, Sheik reveals himself to be Princess Zelda in disguise. Before Link and Zelda can discuss her deception, they are attacked by Koume and Kotake, who were spying on them from outside the Temple.[77] As Link and Zelda attempt to flee their Fire and Ice attacks, Nabooru appears to give Link the Mirror Shield to reflect their Magic back at them and killing them in the process.[78]

With the exception of errors, Koume is usually distinguished from Kotake by her wart on the right side of her nose while Kotake's is on the left side of her nose.

Oracle of Seasons (Himekawa)

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

In the Oracle of Seasons manga by Akira Himekawa, Koume and Kotake ambush Link, Maple and Ricky as they are heading to Northern Peak. The duo do this by tricking Link after disguising Kotake as an elderly woman in need of assistance atop a gorge.[79] Out of kindness, Link resolves to help her reach her destination.[80] As Link grabs her hand, he questions how the old woman was capable of reaching their position unaided.[81] When he is distracted, Kotake drags him down the side of the gorge into a pit infested with Moldorms. Koume and Kotake reveal themselves to Link's group after they have been cornered, criticizing them for being too kind.[82][83] With the help of the recently-awakened Moosh, Link and his friends escape to fight Onox. During the decisive battle with Onox, Koume and Kotake use their magical powers to summon Onox's true form from the Dark Realm.[84]

Oracle of Ages (Himekawa)

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

After their failed plan to destroy Holodrum, Koume and Kotake resume their work by following Link to Labrynna in the Oracle of Ages manga by Akira Himekawa. In "Oracle of Ages: Nayru", she watches over Link's victory in the fighting contest in Lynna City from the Room of Rites, sardonically congratulating him while resolving to defeat him.[85][86] They send Veran to enact their plan of destroying Link, though they warn her that he has the power to repel evil magic.[87][88] Veran initiates this plan by possessing Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, and tricking Queen Ambi into constructing the Black Tower. In doing so, Queen Ambi unwittingly spreads misery among her people, which Koume and Kotake intend to use to ignite the Flame of Sorrow.

Koume and Kotake reappear in "Veran's True Form" after Link and Sir Raven defeat Veran, having traveled to the past to continue their dark designs. In her dying breath, Veran offers her own sorrows to Koume and Kotake.[89] Upon receiving the collective sorrow from Veran, Koume and Kotake appear before Link, who recognizes them from his journey in Holodrum.[90][91] Koume and Kotake reintroduce themselves as Twinrova and explain that the Flames of Destruction and Flames of Sorrow have both been ignited.[92][93] Sacrificing themselves as the final catalyst, they manage to resurrect Ganon. However, Princess Zelda calls to Link from across time to inform him that Ganon's resurrection wasn't totally complete, as Twinrova only managed to return the mindless body, filled with rage.[94]

As in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Koume appears alongside her sister as stage hazards in the Gerudo Valley stage. Koume will attack the left side of the stage with a Fire attack after she appears.

Koume also appears as a Primary Spirit as Koume & Kotake. This Spirit can be summoned with Charlotte Aulin's core, Freezie's core, Fire Flower's core, and 800 SP. After the Spirit has been summoned once, it will appear as a Spirit Battle on the Spirit Board and can be purchased from the Vault Shop for 1000G. At Lv. 99 they can be Enhanced into the Twinrova Primary Spirit.

The cores required to summon the Koume & Kotake Primary Spirit contain several references. The Freezie and Fire Flower reflect Kotake and Koume, respectively, while Charlotte Aulin is a nod to her profession as a witch who defeated the elemental twin vampires Loretta and Stella Lecarde in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. In the associated Spirit Battle, Fighters are pitted against two Bayonettas, Umbran Witches from the eponymous Bayonetta. One Bayonetta is equipped with a Freezie and the other is equipped with a Fire Flower, furthering the reference to the twin witches.

Koume and Kotake greet the heroes as they enter their chamber, announcing that their reward is an honorable death.[96] During the battle with Synthrova, Koume will appear on her side of the machine's screens and telegraph her attacks. To attack, she will summon horizontal or vertical rows of Fire that damage anything that comes into contact with them.
