Overview

The Legend of Zelda

Entrance to the Dungeon

In the First Quest, the Dungeon's entrance is located atop the Lost Hills. Link must climb up four consecutive times to reach the Dungeon.

In the Second Quest, the Dungeon's entrance is located within the lake area of central Hyrule. The Raft, which is obtained in Level 4, is required to reach this Dungeon's entrance. This Dungeon's location in the Second Quest is the same as the location of Level 4 in the First Quest.

Themes and Navigation

Similar to Level 3 and Level 7, the Dungeon is primarily colored green. Inside the Dungeon, Link will be introduced to the mummy-like Enemies known as Gibdos. He will need the Stepladder to cross the pits of Lava. The main Item of the Dungeon is the Flute, which can be used to Warp between Dungeon entrances in the Overworld and unveil hidden places. It is also used to weaken this Dungeon's Boss, Digdogger, allowing Link to defeat it. An underground tunnel separates the area with the Flute from the rest of the dungeon. It is guarded by three Dodongos which respawn if Link dies or leaves the dungeon. To reveal the Flute, Link must clear a room of the Blue Darknuts that reside within. After defeating Digdogger, Link will receive a Heart Container and obtain a Triforce Shard in the next room. A hidden room within this Dungeon houses a Bomb capacity upgrade. The Old Man there will offer the ability to hold four more Bombs for 100 Rupees.

In the Second Quest, the Dungeon's walls and floor are yellow, similar to the First Quest's Level 6. Like Level 6, it also contains many Wizzrobes. The main item of the Dungeon is the Bow. The Boss is a three-headed Gleeok.

The most notable difference in Second Quest is the shape of this Dungeon, changing from a lizard to the shape of the letter "Z." The Maps of the first five Dungeons in the Second Quest each symbolize a letter, spelling out an anagram for "ZELDA."

The Dungeon features block puzzles alongside various chasms that must be crossed with the Hookshot. One of these puzzles requires a block on floor one to be pushed into a hole in the ground in order to press a Switch on basement one. Many walls can be blown with Bombs, revealing hidden rooms filled with Treasure Chests containing Rupees. A Thief can also be found selling a Bomb upgrade for 100 Rupees. Once the Hero of Light defeats the Lanmolas, the Dungeon's Bosses, they drop a Heart Container, followed by a Stone Tablet.
