The Leviathans are an extinct species in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Characteristics

The Leviathans were a species of large, whale-like creatures that went extinct during a catastrophe of disputed nature. This disaster left several near-complete sets of Leviathan Bones scattered around Hyrule Kingdom.

Their remains are the subject of the Side Quest, "Leviathan Bones", in which the three scientists Akrah, Garshon, and Onya debate the cause of their extinction.

While the Leviathans are treated as a singular species by the scientists, the skeletal structures of the three known specimens vary wildly. The Hebra Great Skeleton has a split lower jaw like those of baleen whales, the Gerudo Great Skeleton has a skull resembling that of the sperm whale, and the Eldin Great Skeleton has an unusual cap-like dome across its skull, resembling no real type of cetacean at all.
