Lightscale Tridents are a variant of the Zora Spear. They belong to the Zora Gear equipment archetype, which is a group of Weapons created by the Zora.[5]

Mipha with a Lightscale Trident

A Lightscale Trident was given to the Zora princess Mipha on the day she was born.[6] Even though Mipha preferred to use her healing abilities, it is said that she was talented with this Spear as well.[1] When she came of age, Seggin was the one who taught her to fight with her Trident. King Dorephan later had the story of the Lightscale Trident written on the History of the Zora, Part Four, one of the Stone Monuments found throughout the Lanayru Great Spring.[7]

When Mipha did not return after the Great Calamity, the people of Zora's Domain mourned her. They tried to send the Lightscale Trident down Zora River in an attempt to put her Spirit to rest. However, the Trident began to glow, and Mipha's voice was heard. She told the Zora that she was one with the Lightscale Trident, and they should forget their grief and focus on remembering her. As a result, the Zora celebrate the Champion Festival and honor the Lightscale Trident on the anniversary of the Great Calamity.[7] However, if Link speaks with Trello while the Shrine Quest "The Ceremonial Song" is active, he will admit that the Champion Festival uses a replica of the Lightscale Trident instead of the real one.[8] This replica, the Ceremonial Trident, is nearly identical to the Lightscale Trident, but it is not as strong or durable.[9]

Link can obtain Mipha's Lightscale Trident after taming Divine Beast Vah Ruta and saving Zora's Domain from flooding. King Dorephan will gift the Trident to him as a reward and symbol of their friendship.[10] After the cutscene, Link can collect the Lightscale Trident from inside a Stone Chest in the Throne Room. If the Lightscale Trident breaks, Dento will remake it if Link approaches him at the Hammerhead.[11] To do so, he requires a Zora Spear, a Diamond, and five pieces of Flint.[12] If the Lightscale Trident is not in Link's possession but still exists elsewhere, Dento will be aware of its presence and instead recommend that Link locates it.[13]

The Lightscale Trident is made of metal, and therefore it can conduct Electricity and attract Lightning if it is equipped during Thunderstorms. It will also sink if it is dropped in Water, but it can be picked up using the Magnesis Rune on the Sheikah Slate. Finally, it will not burn if it is exposed to a Fire or a Scorching Climate.

Sidon with a Lightscale Trident

Lightscale Tridents as they appear in Breath of the Wild return in Tears of the Kingdom. Dento describes them as formidable Weapons that have been passed down by generations of Zora.[14] Unlike other Weapons, they have not Decayed as a result of the Upheaval.

Sidon now wields a Lightscale Trident, which he uses in battle. He wields his Trident throughout the Main Quest "Sidon of the Zora" as he and Link fight the Sludge Like, explore Wellspring Island, and clear the Water Temple. Sidon's Sage Avatar carries a projection of a Lightscale Trident, which stills counts as one for the Hyrule Compendium if a Picture is taken of it. During the War in the Depths of Hyrule, Sidon will appear to fight beside Link if he has been awakened as a Sage, and he will use his Lightscale Trident to fight both the Demon King's Army and Demon King Ganondorf himself.

As part of the Side Quest "Glory of the Zora", Dento offers to make a Lightscale Trident for Link to thank him for saving Zora's Domain once again.[15] He requires one Zora Spear, three Diamonds, and five pieces of Flint. He is willing to accepted either a Decayed Zora Spear or an Intact Zora Spear✨.[14] However, he cannot use a Spear that has a Material or Object Fused to it.[16][17] Once Link brings him the necessary supplies, Dento will proceed to make him a Trident.[18][19] Should Link ever break or lose his Lightscale Trident, Dento will be able to make him a new one.[20][21]

Qia, the ancient Sage of Water, can be seen utilizing a Lightscale Trident in flashbacks to the Era of Foundation's Imprisoning War.

Other Appearances

The following section is not part of the Zelda canon and should not be taken as such.

Lightscale Tridents make an appearance in Age of Calamity, where they are Weapons used by Mipha. She can use one when she is chosen as a Warrior for Scenarios and Challenges. Her Lightscale Trident also appears in Movies in Narrations. For example, she wields her Trident when she protects Sidon from a Lynel in "Ray of Hope", when the Yiga ambush the part in "Assassination!", during a Monster attack in "A Song from the Past", and against Waterblight Ganon during "Rescue Across Time: Water and Fire".

Age of Imprisonment

In Age of Imprisonment, Qia wields a Lightscale Trident.[4]

    The Lightscale Trident
    As told by King Dorephan

The queen and I were blessed with a daughter as lovely as a jewel. We named our princess...Mipha.

To celebrate her birth, the smithy Dento presented Mipha with a gift: a mighty spear called the Lightscale Trident.

Mipha grew into a bright girl and soon reached the age of receiving lessons from the royal family's order of knights.

The whole of the royal guard adored her, especially Sergeant Seggin, who loved her as if she were his own kin.

Under Seggin's instruction, Mipha honed her skills, and her radiance grew along with her skill with the Lightscale Trident.

As a Champion, Mipha made her people proud. However, once the Great Calamity stuck, she was never to return.

All of Zora's Domain fell into misery. The merest thought of the princess was enough to overcome anyone with tears.

As a way of offering her soul repose, they tried to send the Lightscale Trident drifting down the Zora River.

But when they did, the trident began to glow, and Mipha's voice rang loud and clear for all Zora to hear:

"The Lightscale Trident and I are one... Abandon your grief and know joy once again. Do not cry...just remember."

And so, keeping to her request, on the day of the Great Calamity...the day that Mipha passed from this world...

the Zora venerate the Lightscale Trident and remember their brave princess.

Such is the origin of the Champion Festival.

  10. Link! I must reward your efforts! Now then! I implore you to collect the treasure inside that chest over there. It was cherished by Mipha. A memento of sorts. I would like you to have it as a token of our friendship. — King Dorephan (Breath of the Wild)
  11. The Lightscale Trident... I somehow felt it had disappeared from this world. Shall I remake it for you?... — Dento (Breath of the Wild)
  12. In that case, I will need a Zora spear, one diamond, and five pieces of flint. — Dento (Breath of the Wild)
  13. You do not have it in your possession, but I can sense the Lightscale Trident is still in this world. If a monster were to take hold of it, that would be extremely dangerous. If you have entrusted it to someone, that is one thing...but if not, I must strongly suggest you locate it. — Dento (Breath of the Wild)
  14. 14.0 14.1 Link. If you intend to go up against the various phenomena plaguing this world, you need a weapon that is up to the task. The Lightscale Trident has been passed down through generations of the Zora since ancient times. It will not fail you. Bring me the necessary materials and I will craft one for you with all due haste. You must acquire a Zora spear, three diamonds, and five pieces of flint. Even a Zora spear that is decayed will suffice. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. Link. Once again, you have done Zora's Domain a great service. Thanks to the efforts of you and our young King Sidon, the domain has been saved. You must allow me to thank you. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. You acquired the necessary materials. However... That Zora spear...has been altered in some way. I cannot craft the Lightscale Trident using an impure Zora spear. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. If it were decayed, that would be no matter. However, I require a Zora spear that has not been altered in any way. You can remove the addition yourself, of course. However, know that it would not survive the process. I hear there is someone in Tarrey Town, up in Akkala to the north, who can remove items used to alter weapons. You should perhaps pay them a visit...and have them remove the item haphazardly attached to your spear. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. You have acquired all of the materials! This will not take long... — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. The Lightscale Trident... I am entrusting it to you. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. If it becomes broken or lost, or if it has otherwise disappeared from this world, I will remake it for you. — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. So, Link... You have returned. Since you are here at my forge, it can only mean one thing. You desire to possess the Lightscale Trident. Correct? — Dento (Tears of the Kingdom)
