The "Songs of Restoration",[1] also known as Lokomo Songs,[2] are songs in Spirit Tracks.

Overview

Carben and Link playing the Song of Restoration

Songs of Restoration are duets that Link plays with the Sages of the Lokomo tribe.[2] Throughout his journey, Link must visit five Lokomo Sages in their respective Sanctuaries and perform a Song of Restoration with each.[3] By the power of the Lokomos' sacred instruments and the Spirit Flute used by Link, the Songs will energize the Spirit Tracks, restoring a section of the tracks leading to the Temple of the realm in which they reside.[4]

The Songs are played in a call-and-response manner where the Lokomo plays a melody on their instrument for one bar, then Link follows by playing a melody shown on-screen for the next bar. In the background of the song, a metronome creates beeps that aid in keeping the rhythm. While the Lokomo's melody my change with each bar, Link's notes remain the same. The Song of Restoration will be successful once Link plays his melody three times in a row, while meeting a certain threshold of accuracy in his timing and notes played; minor mistakes will be ignored. A cutscene then shows Link and the Lokomo playing the Song of Restoration in its entirety, along with additional instrumentation. If Link does not play accurately enough, the two will need to start over.[citation needed] Link is given the option to practice his own melody indefinitely before the real performance begins.[citation needed]

Unlike the other songs learned on the Spirit Flute, the Songs of Restoration are not recorded in Link's Collection Screen and are only played once with their respective Lokomos.

A sixth and final duet takes place in the Dark Realm during the battle against Malladus. After concentrating her power,[5] Princess Zelda calls upon Link to use the Spirit Flute, their powers combined being able to weaken the beast.[6] Zelda leads this duet with her voice, and Link must play his melody four times. The cutscene that follows invokes the images of the five Lokomo Sages adding their sacred instruments to the song, and causes Malladus to be susceptible to the Bow of Light.

List of Songs

The first Song of Restoration that Link plays is in the Forest Sanctuary. Link, along with Gage and his cello, play the duet to restore the tracks leading to the Forest Temple.

Steem Duet

Steem, using his pipa, plays the second duet with Link in the Snow Sanctuary, revealing the Spirit Tracks to the Snow Temple.

Carben Duet

In the Ocean Sanctuary, Link must play a duet with Carben and his flute to open the path to the Ocean Temple.

Embrose Duet

The fourth Song of Restoration is performed with Embrose, who plays the timpani in the Fire Sanctuary located behind the Goron Village. It reveals the tracks that lead to the Fire Temple.

Rael Duet

The fifth Song of Restoration is with Rael of the Sand Sanctuary. He plays the oboe along with Link's Spirit Flute to reveal the tracks to the Sand Temple, though Link must endure the Three Trials to make his way there.

Zelda Duet

In the final battle against Malladus, Princess Zelda sings a duet with Link to combine their powers. All five Lokomo Sages appear to join in with their respective instruments to form a full, orchestral version of the piece. This song reveals a weak spot on Malladus's back.
