The Lord of the Mountain is a Spirit that appears alongside several Blupees on Satori Mountain on nights that it glows green.[2][5] On these nights, many Creatures will migrate to the Mountain, which is said to be due to the Lord calling out to them.[6][7] According to legends, it is the reincarnation of a sage that protects the lands where it died, watching over the Animals in the forest.[3] The Lord of the Mountain is also referred to as a guardian Spirit.[2][3]

Due to its skittish nature, the Lord of the Mountain does not appear before people, and it will flee if it notices them.[2][3] Using Stealth, Link can approach the Lord of the Mountain and ride it. However, if he tries to take it to a Stable, the owner will refuse to register it, believing it that they will be cursed if he does so.[8] If Link dismounts the Lord of the Mountain, it will disappear shortly after.

A Hylian traveler, Quince, had an encounter with the Lord of the Mountain in the past. After hearing about the large number of Creatures that gather on Satori Mountain, Quince went there to hunt them and sell their Meat.[9] During this visit, the Lord of the Mountain appeared and attempted to trample him.[10] However, a Hylian Retriever, Satty, jumped in to defend Quince, which startled the Lord.[11] Quince took the opportunity to run away with Satty, the pair leaving Satori Mountain together.[12]

The Lord of the Mountain can only be found under certain conditions on Satori Mountain. Its appearance is actually dependent on the phase of the Moon, only appearing under the sixth phase, the waxing crescent. Link also must not be in the vicinity of Satori Mountain. If these conditions are met, the game selects a random hour between midnight and 10:00 PM for the Lord of the Mountain to appear, which is evidenced by the mountain being covered in a blue-green glow. The mountain will remain in this state with the Lord of the Mountain present until either 24 in-game hours have elapsed or a new day is reached twice. This state also does not persist if Link enters a Shrine or Divine Beast, or if a save is reloaded. (Merely warping across the overworld will not get rid of the Lord of the Mountain.)[13]

While Satori Mountain is glowing as a result of the Lord of the Mountain's appearance, the area around the mountain and Rutile Lake will be inhabited by not only Blupees, but many fauna that only appear at this time, including birds, woodland creatures, and insects. The fat tree surrounded by mushrooms on the south side (east of Rutile Lake) will be covered with rare beetles at night. Additionally, enemies (most notably the mountain's Stalnox) will not appear.

Tears of the Kingdom

The guardian spirit reappears in Tears of the Kingdom, where it is only known as Satori; the title "Lord of the Mountain" is not used. Additionally, it is sometimes referred to in the plural[14] or as "a Satori,"[15][16] indicating there may be more than one– it is unclear if this is actually the case, or they are merely sightings of the same individual. Basel still refers to it as a unique being, including calling it "that creature known as Satori."[17]

At Cherry-Blossom Trees, Link may find a bowl at the base of the tree. If he offers a fruit item in the bowl, Satori will appear and create glowing pillars of light to illuminate the locations of caves with Bubbulfrogs yet to be found, before disappearing again. Konora is often found at these trees and will remark that Satori is said to be seen at them.[15] If Link speaks to her after offering fruit to Satori, she will note that she felt an unusual sensation in the air, but seems not to have actually seen the spirit. [18]

Kilton's brother Koltin has a fascination with the creature, seeking to turn himself into "a Satori,"[16] which he believes he will achieve by consuming Bubbul Gems, claiming he read this in an "ancient text".[19] Among the items he will trade for Bubbul Gems are the Mystic Set and Koltin's Fabric, which are based after the appearance of Satori.[20]

Trivia

Nomenclature

wikipedia:Satori (literally 'knowing' or 'understanding') is a term used in Japanese and Zen Buddhism to refer to "enlightenment". It has also been speculated that the Lord of the Mountain may be an homage to Satoru Iwata, the late president and CEO of Nintendo who passed away during development of Breath of the Wild, though this has not been confirmed. (Iwata's given name 聡 (Satoru) and the Buddhist term for enlightenment 悟り (Satori) are both derived from the verb さとる (Satoru), meaning "to know" or "to understand".) Further evidence for this theory lies in the fact that information about Satori Mountain and its guardian spirit is told by Botrick, a Hylian NPC who bears a resemblance to Iwata.[21]

In Tears of the Kingdom, the meaning of Satori as "enlightenment" is contrasted by the Japanese name for Bubbulfrogs, マヨイ (Mayoi). This is the Katakana form of the word 迷い (Mayoi), which is also used in Buddhism to refer to "delusion", or the inability to achieve enlightenment.
