Magic Hags' Potion Shop

The Magic Hags' Potion Shop is a location in Majora's Mask.[1]

Features and Overview

Owned by the sorceress sisters Koume and Kotake, it is located in the Southern Swamp. At first, Kotake will only have the Red and Green Potions for sale, but if Link brings her a Mushroom, she will be able to make and start selling the Blue Potion.[2] Kotake will buy any additional Magic Mushrooms for 20 Rupees each.[3]

The shop itself is shaped like a giant kettle, painted red and suspended on a high platform above a small lake. Kotake generally serves customers in the shop while Koume gathers ingredients, such as Mushrooms, in other areas of the swamp.[4] During the three days that Link repeats in Termina, Koume is attacked by the Skull Kid and is immobilized in the Woods of Mystery.[5] If Link encounters her, he can report her status to Kotake in return for a Red Potion,[6] which he then can use to revitalize Koume. However, if Link does not rescue the hag before dawn of the Second Day, Kotake will enter the woods on her broomstick in order to locate her missing sister.[7] Link will be unable to purchase Potions from the shop until receiving the Red Potion from her.[8]

  1. Blue Potion is always shown on the counter but is not purchasable until Link brings Kotake a Magic Mushroom, then exits and re-enters the shop.

Trivia

  • A cardboard box with the illustration of a Mandarin orange and the Japanese texts "信州みかんShinshu Mikan (Shinshu Mandarin Orange)" and "信州農協Shinshu Nōkyō (Shinshu Agricultural Cooperatives)"[note 1] written on it, which Kotake uses as a makeshift stool when she is in the shop, can be found behind the counter. It is intended as an Easter egg and is difficult to see in normal gameplay due to the limited camera angle.[9]
    • The Easter egg was made by field designer Taeko Sugawara. She states it was "a small joke once I considered removing it, but ultimately I left it secretly".[9]
    • The Japanese official X account of the series posted the Easter egg as a promotion for Majora's Mask 3D, presumably with the camera angle controlled by the extra Circle Pad.[10]
  • Unused Door text suggests the Shop used to be closed at night during some point in development.[11]
