Description
These male deer are usually found deep in the forest. They're well known for their huge, branching antlers, which they'll swing in self- defense if threatened. Deer are cautious by nature so it can be tricky getting close, but if you can capture one, you may be able to take it for a ride.
Common Locations
Hyrule Field
Lanayru Great Spring
Recoverable Materials
Raw Prime Meat

Mountain Bucks are large male Mountain Deer covered in shaggy brown fur speckled with light spots along the back. They are male counterparts to Mountain Does.[3] They can easily be distinguished from them by the large antlers that adorn their heads, which they will swing in self-defense if provoked.[3] Bucks can be found in deciduous forests throughout Hyrule, usually in the accompaniment of three or four Mountain Does. The Hyrule Compendium notes Hyrule Field and the Lanayru Great Spring as areas where Mountain Bucks are common, but in actuality they are native to most Regions, including Necluda, Faron, and Akkala. Despite their size, Mountain Bucks are skittish Creatures, and they will run away when they spot Link nearby.[3] When idle, Bucks can be seen grazing and may even lie down to rest.

If Link is Stealthy enough, he may be able to mount and ride a Mountain Buck. Though fast, their utility is limited. They cannot be registered at a Stable, as the owner will claim they only offer this for Horses.[4] When they are killed, Mountain Bucks drop Raw Prime Meat.

At the Hateno Pasture in Hateno Village, Dantz operates the Deer Hunting Mini-Game. He tasks Link with hunting as many of the Mountain Bucks in Retsam Forest as he can in one minute, since they are becoming overpopulated.[5] When Link completes this Mini-Game, Dantz will reward him with Rupees.[6][7][8][9]

A Mountain Buck plays an instrumental role in "The Crowned Beast" Shrine Quest on Rabia Plain. There, Kass will sing an "Ancient Song" that describes placing a beast with a "crown of bone" upon its throne.[10] When Link rides a Mountain Buck onto the Pedestal nearby, it will turn blue, causing Mezza Lo Shrine to emerge from the ground nearby.[11]

Trivia

  • The Mountain Buck is one of nine rideable animals in Breath of the Wild, with the other eight being the Horse, the Giant Horse, the White Horse, the Lord of the Mountain, the Mountain Doe, the Stalhorse, the Honeyvore Bear, and the Grizzlemaw Bear.
    • Of these mounts, the Mountain Buck is one of six that cannot be registered at a Stable.
  • The Mountain Buck and the Mountain Doe are the only creatures to have gender-specific entries in the Hyrule Compendium.
  • The Mountain Buck is painted on the main body of the Emblazoned Shield.
  • The Mountain Buck strikingly resembles and is likely based on the male sika deer, a large Japanese forest-dwelling deer with massive antlers and spots.
