Features and Overview

N. Faron Woods is the northern half of Faron Woods, connected to S. Faron Woods by the Forest Temple Path in the Faron Province. A second path to N. Faron Woods can be found once Link restores power to the Dominion Rod. By moving an Owl Statue in a path just off Coro's Store, Link can enter a passageway to an overlook with a blue Treasure Chest.

N. Faron Woods is split into two major areas. The first is located in the east outside the Forest Temple Path, and the second is in the west outside the Forest Temple. The eastern section features a sunken, misty wood with a large Tree at its center. To the west is a locked Gate guarded by Bokoblins and to the northeast there is a small Cave containing two Treasure Chests. One of these Chests contains the Small Key needed to open the Gate leading to the western half of N. Faron Woods.

The western half opens into a large valley where the gigantic Trees composing the Forest Temple sit. Trill's Shop can be found here. If Link defeats the Bokoblin outside Trill's Shop on his first visit, Trill will congratulate him but then prompt him to buy something from the Shop.

Link first comes to N. Faron Woods in search of Talo, who chased a Monkey from Ordon Village. At the entrance to the Forest Temple Path in S. Faron Woods, Link finds Talo's toy Wooden Sword on the ground. Talo and the Monkey are both trapped in a Cage outside the Forest Temple, being held by two Bokoblins. Upon being freed by Link, Talo returns home with him. Along the way, Talo thanks Link and asks him not to tell his father that he went so far into Faron Woods.

Link must later return here as Wolf Link while searching for the Tears of Light to purge the Twilight over the Faron Province. However, the eastern section is now infested with a poisonous Fog, making normal traversal impossible. Instead, Wolf Link must work with Midna's help to leap across points that extend above the Fog.

At the entrance to the western section, a cluster of Shadow Beasts have taken up residence alongside a broken piece of a bridge. By defeating the Shadow Beasts, Link can create a Portal to N. Faron Woods. Near the entrance to the Forest Temple, the Monkey is again trapped by Shadow Insects. Though she cannot see Wolf Link in the Twilight, she takes notice when the Insects are defeated. Afterward, she muses aloud about how Ook, the leader of the Monkeys, has gone insane and that some strange force led the children of Ordon Village through the Faron Woods.

When Link re-enters N. Faron Woods as a Human, the Monkey snatches his Lantern and swings it to repel the poisonous Fog. She beckons Link to follow her through the Fog, guiding him in an indirect path. Midna chides Link for not paying attention, though in order to retrieve the Lantern Link must follow the Monkey. After the Monkey leads Link to the western Gate, the Lantern Oil will be fully depleted. With it having no further use, the Monkey drops it and runs into the western side of N. Faron Woods, leaving for the Forest Temple.

When the Twilight is dispelled from the Faron Province, the White Wolf appears at the bridge entrance to the Forest Temple. Upon approach, the White Wolf attacks Link, causing him to awaken in an ethereal plane. Here, the White Wolf transforms into the Hero's Spirit, a ghostly Stalfos who challenges Link to battle. In spite of Link's efforts, he is easily knocked off his feet by the Spirit who warns him that he lacks the courage needed to succeed in battle. The Hero's Spirit scolds Link for disgracing the symbol of heroism that the Hero's Clothes represents, insisting that only by cultivating his courage can he gather the power needed to save Hyrule. He assures Link that if he does manage to strengthen his courage, he will become worthy of learning from him.

To help Link on his journey, the Hero's Spirit teaches him the Ending Blow, a Hidden Skill that is used to finish Enemies that have been stunned and knocked to the ground. Link is quick to take to the Hidden Skill, which the Hero's Spirit commends before concluding the lesson. The Hero's Spirit informs Link that he has six more Hidden Skills to pass on to him, though these are only to be taught to those of his bloodline and those who carry the spirit of a hero. In order for Link to learn more from him, he must first hone his courage and power, and then seek out the Howling Stones that call to his beastly spirit. The Hero's Spirit repeats his aphorism to Link before bidding him farewell and returning him to N. Faron Woods.

Later, Wolf Link must revisit N. Faron Woods to retrieve the broken bridge piece, which is revealed to be from Kakariko Gorge. When Wolf Link inspects the bridge piece, Midna offers to take it back to Kakariko Gorge, using her Shadow powers to lift it into the air before Warping it away.

Following Princess Zelda's sacrifice to impart her spirit into Midna in order to heal the damage done to her by Lanayru, Zelda instructs Wolf Link to enter N. Faron Woods in search of the Master Sword. The power of the Master Sword is capable of dispelling the curse placed upon Link in the Spring of the Spirit Lanayru that forces him to remain as a Wolf. However, when Wolf Link arrives at N. Faron Woods, he finds the Monkey fleeing from Puppets.

Upon the defeat of the Puppets, the Monkey thanks Wolf Link for saving her and explains that there is a Sacred Grove across the valley beside the entrance to the Forest Temple. She stumbled upon it while exploring, but quickly found herself attacked by the Puppets as she ventured into the Grove. Hearing this, Midna prompts Link to explore and guides him across a series of platforms around the canyon. Beyond this point sit a pair of Wind Bridges that move in the same direction thanks to the strong winds in the canyon, creating an indirect pathway forward. Tightropes extending across a gap lead further to the entrance of the Sacred Grove where a Howling Stone whistling the "Prelude of Light" sits. When Link howls this Song in tune with the Howling Stone, the White Wolf appears to Link in a vision and instructs him to find him at Hyrule Castle Town's Southern Gate in order to learn the Helm Splitter Hidden Skill.

After Link obtains the second Mirror Shard from Snowpeak Ruins, Telma explains to Link that Rusl left to investigate a disturbance in Faron Woods and prompts him to investigate. Rusl can be found beside the entrance to the Forest Temple where he greets Link by discussing how they used to walk through the woods together. Rusl explains that there is a rumored Temple across the valley in the Sacred Grove that contains an ancient power belonging to the ancestors of the Hylians. He suspects that if this power could be retrieved, it could help save Hyrule. To this end, Rusl asks Link to cross into the Sacred Grove in search of this ancient power.

If Link agrees to help Rusl, he whistles to call his partner to help Link cross the gorge. This partner is revealed to be a Golden Cucco, which swiftly reacts to Rusl's call. However, Rusl senses Link's doubt and reassures him that the Golden Cucco will be able to carry him across the valley safely. With this, Rusl releases the Cucco for Link to grab. If Wolf Link speaks to the Golden Cucco, he preens about his golden plumage and states that they have no business. As before, Link must cross the platforms to reach the Sacred Grove. However, the strong winds have settled and one of the Wind Bridges has disappeared, requiring Link to manually activate the remaining Wind Bridge with the Gale Boomerang and glide to it with the Golden Cucco.
