The Octoball Derby is a location and Mini-Game in A Link Between Worlds.[1]

Overview

The Octoball Derby is located in a forest clearing to the southwest of Lorule Castle, in Lorule's equivalent of the Haunted Grove. There, a Mini-Game of the same name is run by the Derby Boy, the Derby Girl, and a friendly Octorok named Octo. It costs 50 Rupees to play.

The Mini-Game takes place on a baseball diamond with Octo acting as the pitcher. Behind him are two rows of Jars on the ground, and a third row of Jars on top of the Trees surrounding the diamond. Octo will pitch 30 balls that Link must try to hit into Jars to smash them. Hitting a red Jar will score one Rupee, while hitting a rare gold Jar will score five Rupees. Upon hitting three consecutive Jars, a Crow will appear and fly across the screen, which awards 20 Rupees if hit.[2] Failing to hit a target will interrupt the streak. Hitting one of the Sand Crabs scuttling in the infield will reset all of the destroyed Jars.[3]

Link can aim his hits by adjusting his timing and his stance. Pushing the Circle Pad up or down makes Link lean forward or backward, causing the ball to fly closer to the ground or higher in the air, respectively.[4] Swinging with perfect timing will hit the ball straight ahead; swinging earlier will hit it further to the right, while swinging later will hit it further to the left. Hitting Octo with the ball will cause him to pitch his next ball instantly, leaving little reaction time.

After 30 pitches, the game is over and Link will be awarded the amount of Rupees he scored. The first time he scores 100 Rupees or more, a Piece of Heart will also be awarded.[5]

Trivia

  • If Link has a Rod equipped to his first item slot, he will use it instead of the stick.
  • Despite Octoball Derby taking place in Lorule, the Enemy species appearing in the game are more common in Hyrule.

Nomenclature

The Octoball Derby's English name is an allusion to a Home run derby. The Mini-Game's Spanish and French names in the North American version of the game appear to imply their location being a sports stadium.
