"Questioning the Local Cats" is a Side Quest in Echoes of Wisdom.[1]

Overview

If Princess Zelda visits Kakariko Village after completing the Main Quest "Still Missing", she will find an old Hylian man awaiting someone's return.[2][3] When Zelda approaches him, the old man explains that his pet Cat is missing.[4] She typically spends time with the other Cats in town, and he wishes that he had Cat Clothes so he could ask them about her.[5] If Zelda asks about the Clothing, he reveals that they are magical outfits that allow those who wear them to speak to Cats.[6] Previously, the Clothes were available at the Kakariko Village Shop, but they were purchased by a local woman before he could do so.[7] He feels as though it would be rude to ask to borrow Clothing she just purchased, so he does not know what to do.[8] After this conversation, "Questioning the Local Cats" will begin.

When Zelda speaks to the woman outside of the Kakariko Village Shop, she confirms that she bought the Cat Clothes.[9] However, she plans to put them in storage, since she forgot that she was allergic to Cats.[10] Upon hearing that Zelda wants the Cat Clothes, she offers to give them to her in exchange for a favor.[11] She points out a Cat sleeping under the northeastern windmill, and she explains it is sleeping right over an Item that she previously buried.[12][13] The woman asks Zelda to retrieve the Item for her, as she is unable to approach the Cat.[14] She suggests luring the Cat away with something that it likes.[15]

In order to move the Cat, Zelda must summon the Echo of a Grilled Fish for it. Doing this causes the Cat to wake up and eat the fish, after which it moves from its previous spot.[16][17][18] By summoning the Echo of a Holmill, Zelda can dig up the Wallet.[19] The woman then arrives, and before she gives Zelda the Cat Clothes, she explains that she buried her Rupees so she would stop impulsively making purchases.[20][21][note 1]

When Zelda returns to the old man, he is shocked to find that she has acquired Cat Clothes for herself.[24][25] However, the man feels that he is too old to search Kakariko Village for every Cat, so he asks Zelda to talk to them about his missing Cat on his behalf.[26] When asked, most of the Cats in Kakariko Village do not have information about the old man's Cat.[27][28][29] If Zelda asks the Cat on top of the northwestern windmill, it reveals that the Cat she is looking for took a nap in a Tree near the entrance to Kakariko Village.[30]

East of Kakariko Village, Princess Zelda can find the missing Cat sleeping on top of a Tree. She is initially confused when she wakes up.[31] Zelda informs her that the old man is looking for her, and realizing that she has been asleep for a long time and is hungry, she decides to return home.[32] When Zelda returns to the old man, he is relieved that his Cat has come back.[33][34] As a reward for helping him, he gives Zelda 10 bunches of Refreshing Grapes.[35] He then comments on how fickle Cats are, stating that this is why they are so beloved.[36] Afterwards, "Questioning the Local Cats" will be completed.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 An elderly man in Kakariko Village is looking for his cat. You might be able to find her if you get clothes that translate cat speech from the woman in front of the shop.
2 The woman by the shop will gibe you her cat clothes if you dig up an important item she buried. It's right under where a cat is sitting.
3 The buried item was a stash of rupees, which you exchanged for the cat clothes that can translate cat speech. You should update the elderly man.
4 An elderly man in Kakariko Village asked you to use clothes that let you understand cats' speech to find his missing pet. The village cats may know where his furry friend is.
5 The elderly man's cat friend was in Hyrule Field when you found her. She was hungry, so she went home. Head back to Kakariko Village to check in on her.
Complete It turns out the missing cat had missed meal time because she overslept. Her companion was relieved to have his beloved cat at home.
