The Sage of Lightning is a title belonging to multiple characters in Tears of the Kingdom.[2]

Biography

In the ancient past, the Sage of Lightning was a leader of the Gerudo.[3] After the chief of the Gerudo, Ganondorf, transformed into the Demon King, she allied herself with the first King of Hyrule, Rauru, to oppose him.[4] In the Forgotten Temple, Rauru entrusted the remaining Secret Stones to the Sage of Lightning, Sage of Fire, Sage of Water, and Sage of Wind, strengthening them before the battle against Demon King Ganondorf.[2][5] As one of the Six Sages, she swore a vow of loyalty to Rauru.[6]

The Sage of Lightning during the Imprisoning War

The Sage of Lightning fought in the Imprisoning War alongside Rauru and her fellow Sages. She wielded the Arms of the Seven, which consist of Daybreaker and the Scimitar of the Seven. During "The Imprisoning War" Memory, she appears weakened by Demon King Ganondorf's Gloom. To distract the Demon King, she throws her Scimitar of the Seven towards him, which Zelda sends backwards using Recall. The Sage of Lightning was then a witness to Rauru sacrificing himself to seal Demon King Ganondorf.[7]

Following the Imprisoning War, Zelda came to visit the Sage of Lightning at the Lightning Temple.[8] She revealed that Demon King Ganondorf would one day break from his seal, and she asked the Sage of Lightning to ensure the Gerudo will help Link defeat him.[9] Feeling guilty that the Gerudo brought Ganondorf into the world, the Sage of Lightning promised that her successor would awaken to fight with Link.[10] In the "Tears of the Dragon" Memory, the Sage of Lightning and the remaining Sages can be seen watching as the Light Dragon flies into the Sky.

During the "Riju of Gerudo Town" Main Quest, Riju and Link repeatedly hear a voice calling to them from somewhere in the Gerudo Desert.[11] This reminds Riju of the Mural in the Underground Shelter, which states that the owner of the voice is awaiting them.[12][13] Inside the Lightning Temple, they again hear the Sage of Lightning's voice, who directs them to activate the Temple's four Batteries to reach the Lightning Temple 7F.[14]

The Sage of Lightning

After defeating Queen Gibdo, Link and Riju will be able to access the Secret Stone on the Lightning Temple 7F. When Riju touches the Secret Stone, the two will be engulfed in Light, and the Sage of Lightning will appear before them. She reveals that she is Riju's distant ancestor, using her Lightning to serve the King of Hyrule.[1] She expresses her pride in Riju's Power of Lightning, and she claims that Queen Gibdo was summoned by Demon King Ganondorf to prevent Riju from finding her Secret Stone.[15] Riju reacts with confusion, which prompts the Sage of Lightning to recount the Imprisoning War and her promise to Zelda.[16]

Following her story, the Sage of Lightning states that Demon King Ganondorf is still a threat, and she asks Riju to face him alongside Link.[17] When the Sage of Lightning disappears, Riju states that fighting the Demon King sounds fun, and she accepts the Secret Stone and her new role as a Sage.[18] As the new Sage of Lightning, she makes the Vow of Riju, Sage of Lightning to Link, wherein she promises to stand by his side.[19] This allows Link to call on Riju's Sage Avatar and her Power of Lightning whenever he needs.[20]

As the Sage of Lightning, Riju and the other Sages appear at Gloom's Origin to fight Demon King Ganondorf.[21] They are temporarily separated when another Queen Gibdo appears to battle Riju, with Link moving forward to face the Demon King.[22] She returns during their fight to help Link,[23] but the Sages are soon after incapacitated by Gloom.

In the secret post-Credits scene, Riju and her fellow Sages visit the Temple of Time with Link, Zelda, and Purah. Together, the Sages recite a similar vow to the one their ancestors made to Rauru, this time swearing to support Zelda and protect Hyrule.[24]
