The Savage Labyrinth is a mini-Dungeon in The Wind Waker.[1]

Entrance to the Labyrinth

The entrance to the Savage Labyrinth is located on a cliff on the far west side of Outset Island. It can only be accessed by gliding from the island's highest point with the Deku Leaf, or by using the Hookshot from below on a nearby tree. To enter the Labyrinth, Link must have obtained the Power Bracelets in order to lift and destroy the Stone Watcher covering the entrance. If Link attempts to lift the Stone Watcher before obtaining the Power Bracelets, the King of Red Lions will speak to him through the Pirate's Charm and inform him that while he cannot move the stone, something that will grant him the power to do so can be found on the Great Sea.[2]

Themes and Navigation

The Savage Labyrinth is a Secret Cave consisting of fifty-one floors filled with various Enemies. When all Enemies on a floor are defeated, the Flame Wall blocking the hole to the next floor will disappear. As Link progresses further down into the Labyrinth, the Enemies become more difficult and the rooms become more perilous. Enemies in the Savage Labyrinth do not drop Items of any kind when defeated, but Link can steal Hearts, Rupees, Arrows, Bombs, Magic Jars and Spoils by using the Grappling Hook on them.

Each set of ten floors has a different appearance and selection of Enemies to defeat, roughly based on the five main Dungeons, in order: Dragon Roost Cavern, the Forbidden Woods, the Tower of the Gods, the Earth Temple, and the Wind Temple. Every tenth floor is a resting room with Vases containing recovery Items and an optional exit from the Labyrinth.

Link must enter the Savage Labyrinth during the course of his adventure to obtain a Triforce Chart, which is found on the thirtieth floor. In The Wind Waker HD, this Chart is replaced with an actual Triforce Shard. Continuing past this floor is completely optional, though Link must possess the Mirror Shield, which is required to defeat certain Enemies in the later floors. At the very end of the Labyrinth is a Treasure Chest containing a Piece of Heart; or, in The Wind Waker HD, the Hero's Charm (with the Piece of Heart being relocated to the treasure found with Treasure Chart #46).

Trivia

  • In the Japanese version of The Wind Waker, the Treasure Chest at the bottom of the Labyrinth contains a mere Yellow Rupee (worth 10 Rupees), while the Chest hidden under Link's House contains a Piece of Heart. These prizes were swapped for the international releases, with the Yellow Rupee also being upgraded to an Orange Rupee (worth 100).
  • Several Mothulas appear in the Earth Temple floors, despite the fact that they do not appear in the Earth Temple itself.
