Red links

I'm not totally sure how this template works, but it seems as though when a character who doesn't have an article is quoted, the page sometimes tries link to that article anyway even though no redlink appears. Because of this, we have article titles like "A Baby Goron," "Red Goron at Goron Dance Hall," and "The Goron Elder" (that last one could become a redirect, but even still) on the Special:Wantedpages list which are being linked to from the Goron article. Those titles are all names of characters quoted on the article, yet there are no redlinks in the References section. I also find it interesting that not every character quoted without an article shows as a wanted page: "Boy" is quoted a number of times on the Poe Collector article, and "A Kokiri girl" on the Kokiri article, but neither of them are being linked to.

So, what's up, and can it be fixed? Jimbo Jambo 00:10, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It is not this template doing it. But I know what the problem is. It is a coding error in the ParserFunctions extension. Sadly, its developers don't care enough to bother to even try to fix it even though they have been informed of it many times. There is no way to fix the extension but there is a work-around.Emma (Talk) 00:45, January 26, 2009 (UTC)
Oh? What would that be? Jimbo Jambo 20:20, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes Matt, please elaborate! ;P Seriously though, this needs to be fixed one way or another. The Wanted Pages is littered with red links from this template, and I don't see any viable way to prevent this other than manually adding each name or description to the template's code. That's so impractical that, if that's the only option, we should just disable the name linking function altogether and require the user to manually construct the link (piped if necessary) in full using square brackets. This has been fixed by removing the automatic linking function for character names. Adam [ talk ] 09:47, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Link checking

As a result of the change above, many/most/all of the character names previously formatted as links by this template have now reverted to plain text. The following pages' References sections should be checked, and links manually added if required:

Feature Request: Flag to mark citations for coloring

Various guidelines indicate that Template:Color should be used when citing in-game text. This creates a dilemma for those who are able to add a certain citation but unable to get the colors for it – in this case one's options are to add the citation without color or not add the citation at all.

To resolve this dilemma, the template should at least have an optional parameter that marks the citation as "needing coloring" and adds the page to a subcategory of Category:Pages Needing Attention. That way those who have the ability to add colorless references can do that - those who can colorize references have a to-do list to work of off.
