Tri
Tri is a character in Echoes of Wisdom.[4]
Biography
Tri is a Fairy who accompanies Princess Zelda on her adventure through Hyrule. They and their fellow Tris, who they refer to as their friends, were created by the Golden Goddesses with the purpose of mending Rifts.[5] In addition to this, Tri is able to pass through solid matter. Aside from Zelda, most other characters are unable to see Tri unless they have had contact with a Rift in the past.[6] Using Tri's Power, Zelda is able to make use of several abilities, such as creating Echoes or using Bind.
Prior to the beginning of Echoes of Wisdom, Tri was captured by Ganon like Zelda was. After being freed upon Ganon's defeat, Tri began watching over Zelda.[7] They initially appear as a ball of Light, directing Zelda to Link's abandoned hood after she breaks free from Ganon's Crystal. As the Rift in the Suthorn Ruins expands, Tri guides Zelda to safety. Although they are not seen after Zelda exits the Ruins, Tri ends up following her to Hyrule Castle.[8]
After Zelda's imprisonment, Tri witnesses the false King of Hyrule? making plans for Zelda's execution, and so they seek out to Zelda's prison cell in the Hyrule Castle Underground to warn her.[9] Upon finding Zelda, Tri reveals their true form to her, and they are surprised that she can see them.[10] Tri introduces themself to her and explains their story to Zelda.[7] After learning Zelda's name, Tri tells her about the King's plans.[9] Tri remarks that the versions of the King of Hyrule, Minister Lefte, and General Wright that came out of the Rift behaved strangely.[11] When Zelda accuses them of being impostors, Tri seems unfamiliar with the word.[12]
In order to clear Zelda's name, Tri suggests that they save the King, Minister Lefte, and General Wright.[13] Tri passes through the cell's bars to begin Zelda's escape.[14] However, they are confused when Zelda does not follow them, realizing that she is unable to move through them.[15] To help Zelda, Tri creates the Tri Rod and lends it to her.[16][17][18] The Rod allows Zelda to make use of Tri's ability to create Echoes, and they instruct Zelda how to use it.[19][20][21][22] Once Zelda is able to leave her cell, Tri states that she should continue her escape.[23]
After the pair sneak past the patrolling Soldiers, they encounter Impa. Zelda informs her of the help she received from Tri, and Tri adds that Zelda is able to use the Rod's power.[24] Impa then looks around and asks where Tri is.[25] Tri floats in front of Impa's face, confirming that she is unable to see them.[26] When the group is interrupted by Soldiers, both Zelda and Tri are shocked to see Impa fight them off with ease. Impa then gives Zelda the Log, which contains a Map with a marked House for her to visit.[27][28] While Zelda and Tri continue their escape, Impa stays behind to fight off more Soldiers.[29] In the Royal-Family Shortcut, the two are shocked by the sudden expansion of a nearby Rift. Tri explains that they have the power to mend Rifts, but since they are unable to fix such a large one on their own, they suggest leaving it alone.[30] However, the Rift begins growing again, and Zelda is swept up in the Shortcut's waterways as she tries to avoid it.
In a Cave on Suthorn Beach, Tri repeatedly nudges Zelda awake and tells her to keep going.[31] Once they leave the Cave, Tri wonders where they are, and they recommend that Zelda consult her Map.[32] Tri is shocked when they encounter a Zol, and when it notices Zelda, Tri asks if she knows how to fight.[33][34] After Zelda defeats it, Tri informs her that she can Learn the Echoes of Monsters by using the Tri Rod on the Shimmers they leave upon their defeat.[35] On Suthorn Prairie, Tri notices a Waypoint, and once it has been activated, they explain that they are able to Warp between Waypoints.[36][37] In Suthorn Forest, Tri warns Zelda of Monsters in the area, though they remind her that they are close to the location marked by Impa.[38] Eventually, the two reach Lueburry's House, only to find that it has been partially consumed by a Rift.[39] Tri is concerned that the other Tris have not yet mended such a large Rift.[40] They ask for Zelda's help investigating what happened, since finding their friends means they will be able to mend the Rift.[41] Looking around, they decide to head east to look for a way to enter the Rift.[42]
When Tri and Zelda reach the eastern end of the Rift, Tri can sense that their friends are trapped somewhere inside.[43] Tri decides that they must work with Zelda to help save them.[44] They then approach the Rift, to which they are able to create an entrance.[45][46] When they enter the Stilled Suthorn Forest, Tri explains the mechanics of the Still World to Zelda, including the fact that Tris are responsible for restoring anything that falls into Rifts.[47] Tri can tell that their friends are deeper in the Still World, and they urge Zelda to continue.[48] They come upon a resident of Suthorn Village who has become petrified in the Still World, and Tri states that, although people who fall in usually break apart if they remain that way, such a thing will not happen to Zelda.[49] They also find a petrified Minister Lefte, and Tri assures Zelda that she will be restored once they mend the Rift.[50]
Trivia
- During development of Echoes of Wisdom, it was intended for Link to talk instead of Princess Zelda. As the developers struggled to answer the question "What would Link say?", they came up with with a setting where Link would be mute. Since it was standard for the protagonist of every The Legend of Zelda game to not talk, it was decided for Princess Zelda to not speak as well. This led to the creation of Tri, who would do most of the talking in order to advance the story.[51]

Master Tri. I find it interesting that I can see you now, where I was not able to before... Ah, and I know that the princess has been safe because she's had you as her guide. So now that I can see you, I can say this to your face: thank you for everything.

Tri

And so we brought forth the Tris to dissipate the rifts, thus keeping the balance.

You can see me too? That's strange. Zelda's always been able to. But now both of you can as well?
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom)You're telling me we're the only ones who can see you? That's odd...
— Lueburry (Echoes of Wisdom)Indeed! Such a fascinating, and might I add—adorable, creature.
— Minister Lefte (Echoes of Wisdom)>br/>Yeah, yeah, sure. But back to the matter at hand: What is it that you and I have in common? We've both ended up in rifts and lived to tell the tale. It seems the rifts change people somehow...

My name's Tri. That blue monster? He caught me too. I've been watching you since then.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I followed you here, to this castle.

Oh, yeah. I should ask. What's your name? Zelda. Got it. Zelda, your life is in danger if you stay here. The person who put you here is the king, right? He told someone to hurry and prepare for your execution. Once I heard that, I figured I'd better tell you.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
You can see me?
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
The king and the other two got pulled into that rift. The three that came out seemed weird.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Oh, you noticed they seemed weird too! You think they're...impostors? What an odd word.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Anyway, it's too dangerous for you to stay here. I think if we could save the people who've been taken into rifts, we could reveal the truth. But none of those people will be able to get out on their own. We have to save them together, Zelda.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
But first, let's save you. Let's get you out of here.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
You can't get through the bars? Huh, that's interesting.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Let me help.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Zelda, I've made something to help you.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
You borrowed the Tri Rod! It's a mysterious rod the same color as Tri. It's warm to the touch.
— Game Screen (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I can create echoes of things in this world. I'm not sure what will be most useful to you, but I'm sure this will come in handy. Go up to something that's shimmering, then press [ZR]Icon .
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Good job. That's how you learn things. Anything you've learned can be echoed with [Y]Icon .
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Look at that. Perfect job. What you created is called an echo. Press [ZR]Icon when you're near an echo to erase it. If you want to erase all of your echoes, hold [ZR]Icon .
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Zelda, you can see echoes you've learned by holding down [Directional Button Right]Icon . From there, you can select one with [R Stick]Icon , and then release [Directional Button Right]Icon to swap out the selection.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Now we can escape. Let's go.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
What?! The king, general, and minister are all impostors? And your friend Tri made you a...Tri Rod, was it? I see...
— Impa (Echoes of Wisdom)Zelda can make use of the rod's power.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Where might Tri be now? You're here all on your own?
— Impa (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I think you're the only one who can see me, Zelda...
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Here, Princess. Take this with you.
— Impa (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Make your way to the house marked with [Marker]Icon . Tell them Impa sent you—they'll surely help you.
— Impa (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Ahead you'll find a shortcut that leads out of the castle. Use it to make your escape! Hurry now, Princess. We will see each other later!
— Impa (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Another rift... Rifts have appeared occasionally for a very long time. Mending them was our job. Except...my power alone isn't enough to take care of a large rift like this one. Let's get away from it for now.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
You're awake. Good. Let's go.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Where are we? Maybe that map thingy that person gave you can help us figure it out.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Oh! A monster!
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
It noticed you... Zelda, can you fight monsters?
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Did you learn to echo that monster? Defeating new monsters leave a shimmer, which allows you to learn about them like you just did.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Hey, Zelda. Have a look at this.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
All right! It lit up! These are waypoints. We use these a lot. Rifts can appear all over the place, so we use these to travel quickly around the world. Once you interact with one, you can travel to it at any time. I'm sure they'll be helpful. Waypoints can be found in lots of different places. If you spot any, make sure to check them out.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I'm sensing lots of creatures in this area. I think the place marked with [Marker]Icon is up ahead.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Hm? Was this where we were supposed to go? Looks like the rift is blocking the door...
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Zelda. My role is to mend rifts. I have lots of friends who do the same. We all work together, fixing up rifts. Normally, my friends fix them quickly. So it's... weird that this is still here. I wonder if something happened to them.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Zelda, will you investigate with me? I'm guessing my friends are in the rift. And if we find them, we can mend this rift easily.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Let's head this way. We'll need to find an entry point.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I knew it. I can sense my friends in there. But...they can't move. It seems like they're trapped. If that's the case, they won't be able to mend the rift at all.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I think we'll have to go in there and help them. Then we can deal with this rift properly. We can save them if we work together, Zelda. So? What do you say?
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Hm...
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
All right. We can get in there now. Let's go save my friends!
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
This is the Still World. Everything you see floating around in here was sucked in through a rift. Anything that ends up here will begin to break apart and eventually vanish completely. Me and my friends have the ability to restore things that have ended up in rifts though.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Speaking of, I sense my friends deeper in here. Let's go, Zelda.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
When people get pulled into rifts, they kind of... petrify and can't move anymore. And if they stay that way? They'll eventually fade away. But that won't happen to you, Zelda. You're special.
— Tri (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Hey. I remember this one from the castle. I can restore her back to normal if we mend this rift.
