Wooden Shield

From Zelda Wiki, the Zelda encyclopedia

Wooden Shields, also known as Strange Boards, are recurring Items in The Legend of Zelda series. These Shields are usually unable to protect against Fire and magical attacks, and may even be burnt by them. The Wooden Shield is usually superseded by a stronger, metallic Shield.

Location and Uses

Oracle of Seasons

In Oracle of Seasons, the Wooden Shield is the first Shield that Link can obtain. It can be upgraded to the Iron Shield and later the Mirror Shield through a Linked Game. Wooden Shields can be bought for 30 Rupees from the Horon Village Shop.

Oracle of Ages

In Oracle of Ages, the Wooden Shield is the first Shield that Link can get. Wooden Shields can be bought for 30 Rupees in the Lynna Item Shop, or from Business Scrubs for varying amounts of Rupees.[citation needed] In a Linked Game, Impa gives Link a Wooden Shield at the start of the adventure instead of the Wooden Sword, which he already has.

Twilight Princess

In Twilight Princess, Wooden Shields can be bought at Malo Mart in Kakariko Village or the Hot Spring Shop on Death Mountain. They serve as replacements to the one-of-a-kind and flammable Ordon Shield, the first Shield Link obtains. Wooden Shields are larger than the Ordon Shield and have metal trims, but are functionally identical and may also catch on fire. If it catches fire, the Wooden Shield can be saved by putting it away. Like the Ordon Shield, the Wooden Shield is able to block and subsequently catch Arrows, a feature that Hylian Shields are incapable of.

Phantom Hourglass

In Phantom Hourglass, the Wooden Shield is the only Shield available. In order to improve his defense, Link must use Neri's powers to improve the Shield's capabilities, such as blocking more projectiles and stunning enemies that run into the Shield. The Shield also appears in Spirit Tracks, known as the Shield of Antiquity, where it cannot be eaten by Like Likes.

Skyward Sword

In Skyward Sword, the Wooden Shield can be obtained from Owlan by talking to him after obtaining the Goddess Sword.[6] It can also be bought from the Gear Shop at the Skyloft Bazaar for 50 Rupees. It is the most basic Shield in the game. It is weak to fire and will burn up if Link falls into lava.[7] However, it is immune to electric attacks, making it useful in the Lanayru Desert. The Shield's special property is that it will not only block enemy Arrows, but also enable Link to collect any of them that are lodged into it; however, while a well-timed Shield Bash will protect it from most fire-based attacks, a flaming Arrow will make it start to burn. By trading Gondo some Rupees and Treasure, Link can upgrade the Wooden Shield at the Scrap Shop. Despite their increased durability, they still retain their weakness to fire.

Wooden Shields are simple Shields in Breath of the Wild. They have low defensive power, but they are known to be ideal for less-experienced fighters.[4] They are able to withstand lighter attacks, but it is not recommended to block stronger blows with them.[4] They are found either abandoned or wielded by low-tier Enemies in Hyrule Field and East Necluda.

Russ sells a Wooden Shield on Trilby Plain for 30 Rupees.[8] When Link buys it, Russ will encourage him to try Shield Surfing with it.[9] While renting a Sand Seal, Frelly will give Link a Wooden Shield if he pays 50 Rupees.[10] Selmie will also reward Link with a Wooden Shield if he completes the Advanced Course of the Shield-Surfing Mini-Game in over 3:30.[11]

Being made of wood, Wooden Shields will burn if they are exposed to Fire or equipped in a Scorching Climate. They also float if they are dropped in Water, and they will not attract Lightning during Thunderstorms or conduct Electricity. Finally, they are unable to be picked up with the Magnesis Rune.
