Related Quests

Yona is a member of a royal Zora family that resides in a domain outside of Hyrule. During her childhood, she visited Zora's Domain in the Lanayru Great Spring, where she became friends with Sidon.[5] As an adult, she has become Sidon's fiancée, which was arranged by Dorephan.[8]

When Yona would visit Zora's Domain as a child, Sidon was initially scared of her due to his fear of strangers, but Yona was more mature and treated him as a younger brother.[9] One day, while Yona and Sidon were playing with the other Zora children, a sudden Rain came and swept them all down the Zora River.[10] Yona was able to pull Sidon to shore, and she comforted him as the River continued to rise toward them.[11] Eventually, the pair were rescued by Sidon's older sister, Mipha, who Yona came to admire.[12]

Nomenclature

Following the pattern of Zora characters in Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Tears of the Kingdom being named after musical concepts, Yona's name is derived from the yo-na-nuki Japanese pentatonic scale. Prior to the western solfège being taught in Japan, the seven-note scale was taught in the Meiji era using Japanese numeral names, as hi fu mi yo i mu na.[13] Thus, yo-na-nuki onkai (ヨナ抜き音階) means "scale omitting the fourth and seventh tones" (in the do-re-mi solfège, fa and ti). The Japanese names of Yona's attendants, Chroma and Khira, also reference this way of counting notes: Chroma is named ヒフミ (Hifumi) (also a female given name, 一二三), and Khira is named イム (Imu). Additionally, Yona's musical theme uses this scale in the same way that Mipha's Theme and Sidon's Theme use the notes they are respectively named after, mi-fa and ti-do.

Yona is also unique in that her name above dialogue boxes displays as "???" until she formally introduces herself. Most characters display their names as soon as Link speaks to them, even if they have not yet introduced themselves.
