Zaganaga is the Boss of the Desert Palace in A Link Between Worlds.[1] It appears as a monstrous, plant-like creature with a spiny, cactaceous body.

Characteristics

The battle against Zaganaga takes place in a large, enclosed pit of Quicksand residing in Misery Mire, which is accessed by a Fissure placed just outside the final room of the Desert Palace in Hyrule. The enclosure features eleven scattered columns which act as platforms Link can stand atop, using his Sand Rod to create bridges between them.

At the start of the battle, Zaganaga will burrow into the Quicksand and toward one of the platforms at random, emerging on top of it. Link must make his way toward it using the Sand Rod and strike it with his Sword or other weapons. While Link traverses the Quicksand pit, Zaganaga will begin to spew Peahats that will flutter around the arena, attempting to knock Link into the Quicksand, but which can be dispatched with a single hit from the Sword. Zaganaga will burrow back into the Quicksand after several seconds or after being hit several times, then move toward a different platform.

After taking enough damage, Zaganaga will flare its petals, revealing eyes attached to its inner petals. Its movement speed and its rate of spawning Peahats will increase, and it gains a new attack of firing a steady blast of sand toward Link. Zaganaga will attempt to keep this blast aimed at Link, but its slow rotation speed allows Link to outrun the attack by using the Sand Rod wisely. Several more hits with the Sword will defeat the monster. Afterward, a sand-filled hutch at the arena's north edge will open, spilling all of its sand into the pit and revealing a Heart Container and the Painting of Irene buried inside.
