Golow River

From Zelda Wiki, the Zelda encyclopedia

Golow River is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Features and Overview

Breath of the Wild

Golow River is a river delta of lava that flows south of Darunia Lake, located in Eldin Canyon. The River connects to the narrower Goronbi River further south, which ultimately flows into Goronbi Lake. The River is bordered by a mountain range on its western side. Directly to the east of the River is Goron City.

Tears of the Kingdom

With the cooling of Lava throughout the Eldin Canyon, Golow River has become a Hot Spring river.

Nomenclature

Golow River is named after Golo, a Goron from Skyward Sword. The neighboring Gortram Cliff and Gorko Lake/Gorko Tunnel are also named for Gorons in that game, Gortram and Gorko respectively.

In Japanese, although the other two are more clear, the connection with this location's name is much more obscure, using different kanji readings. In Skyward Sword, Golo is called ケンブン (Kenbun). This is derived from the on'yomi reading of 検分 meaning 'inspection' or 'survey' due to his role as an archaeologist. Kenbun is also the on'yomi reading of the related word 見聞, meaning 'observe' or 'experience'. However this also has the kun'yomi reading of mikiki (more commonly spelled with an okurigana as 見聞き), which when rendered in katakana yields the Japanese name of Golow River, ミキキ川 (Mikiki-gawa).
