Proposal

Status: Not started

I propose that we adopt both classification for Icon and Sprite for files, filenames, and categories in the same game(s). The distinction between Sprites and Icons has largely been based on whether they originate from a 2D or a 3D game. Both are textures displayed on a screen and serve the same broad purposes under our current definitions.

Dating back as early as A Link to the Past, there exist both overworld sprites and inventory sprites for the same subjects. With our current process, we need to prioritize one over the other. This proposal seeks to address previous confusion about the technical definition of "icon", redefining its use to refer to sprites that represent other things. For 2D games, this would make inventory sprites "icons" of the overworld sprites, allowing us to use both where appropriate.

Filenames for 3D games would largely remain unaffected, as sprites are already used as icons of things that exist as models and the like. Categorization for these files would need to be updated to account for the new filetype.

What does this affect?
Guidelines:Files This would introduce a new type of file, splitting the existing Icon subset into its own category.

Questions

Additional information

Cadence of Hyrule technically has two sprites for things that appear in the inventory. Overworld sprites are larger, and inventory sprites are smaller have a black drop shadow. We presently do not have any of the inventory sprites on the wiki, though some may be found in file histories.
