Currently, nine Sage positions are known to exist, divided in a group of seven and a group of two. The original and presently most featured group consists of the first seven, hence their common designation as the "Seven Sages." The leader of them, the seventh Sage, is commonly an incarnation of Princess Zelda (or possibly the best suited member of the Royal Family of Hyrule of that time). The seventh Sage is not a core member and the other Sages have just as often been seen working as a group of only six, appropriately referred to then as "The Six Sages." TWW brought two more Sages to the roster, seemingly functioning independently from the seven Sages. This group's total number is not specified and due to their current one-time appearance, it is also unclear if their responsibilities outrange solely taking care of the Master Sword's Power to Repel Evil.
There are currently 10 types of Sages known to exist. Sages of Fire, Water, and Spirit appear in OoT, TP, and TotK. Sages of Light, Forest, and Shadow appear in - and -. Sages of Wind appear in TWW and -. Sages of Earth are only known to appear in -, and Sages of Lightning and Time are only known to appear in -. Princess Zelda, who is the Sage of Time in -, has no known elemental crest associated with her in -.

- introduces seven Sages, which includes their leader, Princess Zelda. Six Sages, with the same symbols on their clothing as those associated with six of -'s Sages, appear in -. Two sages appear in -, whose function is to take care of the Master Sword's Power to Repel Evil. - features six Sages led by King Rauru, a Zonai and not a Sage himself. Zelda is one of the Sages. Their functions do not involve the Sacred Realm, but they do attempt to protect Hyrule. King Rauru declares the six of them as sages, though Rauru, who uses powers of light, is not himself described as a sage in the story. Rauru and the sages face Ganondorf but are unable to overcome his immense power over darkness, and Mineru is fatally wounded as a result. Finally, Rauru chooses to sacrifice himself, sealing both himself and Ganondorf away for centuries, until Link will be able to defeat him with the Master Sword.

After Rauru's sacrifice, Zelda pays a visit to each of the four sages from the Hyrulean races, asking that they pledge their descendants' support of Link in the future when Ganondorf returns. The sages wholeheartedly agree to her request, hiding their Secret Stones within temples until their descendants can find them. Assisting and awakening each of these four descendants becomes part of Link's quest as he seeks to defeat the Demon King.

Zelda
The descendant of the Zonai King Rauru and the Hylian Queen Sonia, Zelda uniquely possesses a combination of their powers over light and time; this power over light allowed her to play a vital role in defeating Calamity Ganon during the events of BotW. Some time after these events, she and Link find the risen body of Ganondorf beneath Hyrule Castle, at which point Zelda accidentally activates her power over time through use of a Secret Stone, sending herself back centuries to the founding of Hyrule and Ganondorf's original rise. She is taken in by her ancestors and provided training in how to use her powers, eventually joining Rauru and the sages as the Sage of Time after Sonia's death. After Rauru's sacrifice, Zelda receives the damaged Master Sword from across time and realizes that she can use her own sacred light power to restore it if she grants herself immortality by consuming her Secret Stone, at the cost of her humanity. Before she enacts this ritual, she makes plans with Mineru and visits each of the four sages from the Hyrulean races, securing their support in Link's eventual quest to defeat Ganondorf. She then consumes her Secret Stone, transforming into a Light Dragon and embedding the Master Sword in her forehead, where it remains for the next several centuries, regaining its power through her sacred light.

After the defeat of Ganondorf, Zelda is returned to human form, despite that being thought impossible by Mineru, by Rauru and Sonia's spirits channeling their power through Link. As Mineru's spirit fades away, Zelda vows to lead Hyrule to the peace that Rauru and Sonia dreamed of, supported by Link and the four new sages, tearfully bidding her ancestors farewell and expressing gratitude for what they have taught her.

As the Sage of Time, Zelda is able to send things back in time, moving objects to locations they were previously and sending herself and the Master Sword all the way back to the founding of Hyrule, though her understanding of her abilities are too limited for her to know how to undo this. The power to move objects through their own past is granted to Link as the Recall function of Rauru's arm.

Mineru
Mineru is the older sister of Rauru and another one of the Zonai. Her unique power over spirits is enhanced by her Secret Stone, allowing her to separate her spirit from her body. As a researcher, she is fascinated and deeply knowledgeable about the Zonai's history and technology, and seeks to create constructs as new bodies to store her spirit in should her original body pass away. It is Mineru who informs Zelda of the forbidden process of draconification, the consumption of a Secret Stone to obtain immortality at the cost of one's own humanity, but she cautions Zelda against utilizing the ritual.

Mineru fights alongside Rauru's other sages against Ganondorf, but is mortally wounded in the process. An ill and weakened Mineru is later visited by Zelda, who reveals her intention to achieve draconification in order to restore the Master Sword; unable to dissuade her, Mineru vows her support in Zelda's task. To this end, she successfully builds one of her dreamt-of constructs, which she will be able to use as a body to assist Link in the future, hides her Secret Stone away in the Spirit Temple, and transfers her spirit from her body into Zelda's Purah Pad before her body can succumb to the Gloom-Borne Illness. Zelda hands the Purah Pad off to a Steward Construct to give to Link in the future, with the intention that Mineru will immediately lead Link to her construct body and Secret Stone before catching him up on what occurred. However, due to interference from Ganondorf, Mineru's planned construct body is seized by Gloom and Mineru is unable to get in contact with him until he finds a new construct's head on Dragonhead Island, far above the Faron region. Once he does, she guides him in building her a new construct, traversing to the Spirit Temple, and eventually defeating her original construct body in combat. With her Secret Stone recovered, Mineru is able to address Link face-to-face and explain Zelda's actions. Using her construct, she supports him for the rest of his quest, including facing off against the Seized Construct once again to prevent it from intervening in Link's face-off with Ganondorf.

After Ganondorf's death, Mineru's spirit provides Zelda, Link, Purah, and the four new sages a tour of the Great Sky Island. Mineru briefly speculates on how Zelda was restored to her regular form before realizing that her own time has come as her spirit fades away. Zelda, distraught over the loss of her friend, assures Mineru that she will achieve Rauru and Sonia's dream of peace for Hyrule, and the other sages vow to support her in this task. Confident in their ability to keep this promise, Mineru fades away, assuring Zelda that she will tell Rauru and Sonia of her plans and her great affection for them.

As the Sage of Spirit, Mineru is able to control the giant construct Link built for her as a new body. This construct can attach different objects to its arms and back to augment its combat or movement abilities, and Link is able to ride on its back to traverse dangerous terrain or use it in battle.

Original Sages
The original group of sages consisted of Mineru as the Sage of Spirit, Zelda as the Sage of Time, and four unnamed representatives of the Zora, Goron, Rito, and Gerudo as the Sages of Water, Fire, Wind, and Lightning, respectively. These sages fought wear masks resembling the four Divine Beasts and fought alongside Rauru against Ganondorf once he awakened as the Demon King. After Rauru's sacrifice, the Water, Fire, Wind, and Lightning Sages vowed to have their descendant support Link in his campaign against Ganondorf, hiding away their Secret Stones in temples.

When Ganondorf returns, he creates monsters specifically to prevent the sages' descendants from awakening to their powers as sages, sending the four regions into chaos. The original sages speak to Link and their descendants from the afterlife to guide them to the temples and the monsters causing the havoc to occur. Once these monsters have been defeated, the sages appear to Link and their descendant, explaining to the descendant what occurred in the original battle against Ganondorf and what their destiny is as a sage in the present day.

Tulin
Tulin, son of Teba, is a descendant of the original Sage of Wind. As a result, he possesses power over the wind which is unparalleled by other Rito; this power has made him quite confident in his own abilities to the point that he cockily sets out to face monsters on his own, to the frustration of his father and other Rito. When a permanent blizzard sets in over Rito Village, Tulin desperately wishes to figure out the source himself, but is forbidden from doing so by Teba as the new chief of the Rito. It is only once Tulin realizes the limits of his own powers and the benefit of working as a team by fighting alongside Link that Teba grants Tulin permission to travel to the center of the storm, as only Tulin's control over wind is strong enough to get inside. At the eye of the blizzard, Tulin and Link find the Wind Temple, where Colgera has been producing the endless snow. By working together, Link and Tulin are able to solve the puzzles of the temple and defeat Colgera, ending the blizzard.

Once Colgera is dealt with, the Sage of Wind's Secret Stone appears. Tulin touches it, allowing the original Sage of Wind to appear to him and Link. The sage compliments Tulin on his skills and explains to him the history of the sages and how Tulin is destined to fight alongside Link as the new Sage of Wind himself. Tulin eagerly accepts this task, thrilled to fight alongside his hero and fulfill an important rule in the oncoming battle, and the Secret Stone binds itself to him as an anklet. With the Secret Stone's augmentation, Tulin is able to create a spiritual representation of himself that he binds to Link, allowing Link to make use of his abilities while he remains in Rito Village. Tulin later rejoins Link physically to face off in the final battle against Ganondorf, battling Colgera once more to prevent it from interfering in Link and Ganondorf's duel.

After the defeat of Ganondorf, Tulin joins the other sages in visiting the Great Sky Island with Mineru. As Mineru begins to fade away, Tulin cues the other sages to express their commitment to Princess Zelda and the future peace of Hyrule. Though they stumble over their rehearsed speech, their vow is enough to assure Mineru that Hyrule is in good hands.

As the Sage of Wind, Tulin is able to create gusts of wind by flapping his wings. Link can use these gusts to gain a speed boost or further horizontal movement in midair, or to push lightweight objects or activate fans.

Yunobo
Yunobo is a Goron and the descendant of both the Champion Daruk and the original Sage of Fire. Having originally supported Link in his campaign against Calamity Ganon, Yunobo founded YunoboCo shortly thereafter in order to establish a greater connection between Goron City and the other peoples of Hyrule. Yunobo is visited by Princess Zelda, actually Phantom Ganon in disguise, shortly after the Upheaval begins. This false Zelda gifts Yunobo a mysterious mask that seizes his mind, causing him to act uncharacteristically cruel and haughty, and guides him into bringing Marbled Rock Roast to the other Gorons, seizing their minds as well. Eventually, the phantom commands Yunobo to face Link directly in combat, but Link is able to destroy his mask in this fight, returning him to his regular, meek self. Distraught over his role in Goron City's suffering, Yunobo joins Link in pursuing the fake princess to the center of Death Mountain, where they find the Fire Temple, where Marbled Gohma has been producing the Marbled Rock Roast.

With Marbled Gohma's defeat, Yunobo is able to access the Sage of Fire's Secret Stone and receives a vision from his ancestor, who explains the history of the sages and how Yunobo is destined to fight alongside Link as the new Sage of Fire. Despite his lack of self-confidence, Yunobo accepts the task, and the Secret Stone binds itself to him as a belt. Yunobo uses the powers of the Secret Stone to create a spiritual representation of himself that he binds to Link, allowing Link to make use of his abilities while he remains in Goron City. Yunobo later rejoins Link physically to face off in the final battle against Ganondorf, battling Marbled Gohma once more to prevent it from interfering in Link and Ganondorf's duel.

After the defeat of Ganondorf, Yunobo joins the other sages in visiting the Great Sky Island with Mineru. As Mineru begins to fade away, Yunobo joins the other sages in expressing their commitment to Princess Zelda and the future peace of Hyrule. Though they stumble over their rehearsed speech, their vow is enough to assure Mineru that Hyrule is in good hands.

As the Sage of Fire, Yunobo is able to grant himself an explosive power as he uses the typical Goron rolling ability. Link can guide Yunobo's charges as a combat tool or to break through rocks or cracked walls.

Sidon
Sidon is the prince of the Zora, the brother of the Champion Mipha and the descendant of the original Sage of Water. Sidon forged a strong bond with Link in the original battle against Calamity Ganon and has since committed himself to the wellbeing of Zora's Domain. Because of Ganondorf's interference, sludge has been raining down on the domain and surrounding areas from above. Though there is little he can do to stop all of the pollution, Sidon remains in the mountains above the domain, using his control over water to purify the water that enters the domain itself and provide the other Zoras with at least the one safe haven. Fearing losing another loved one the same way he lost Mipha, Sidon has completely isolated himself from his friends and family, including his fiancée, Yona. Through the support of Link and Yona, Sidon is eventually able to regain his confidence, enstrusting the safety of the domain to Yona while joining Link in pursuing the source of the sludge. This leads them to the Water Temple above the domain, where they work together to activate a mechanism that dumps purifying water on the place where the sludge is coming from, revealing Mucktorok, the creature that has been creating it.

Sidon and Link are able to destroy Mucktorok, revealing the Sage of Water's Secret Stone, which grants them a vision of Sidon's ancestor. The original sage recounts to Sidon the history of the sages and how Sidon is destined to fight alongside Link as the new Sage of Water. Sidon accepts this task, and the Secret Stone binds itself to him as a glove. This new power allows Sidon to create a spiritual representation of himself that he binds to Link, allowing Link to make use of his abilities while he remains in Zora's Domain, where he is crowned king and marries Yona. Sidon later rejoins Link physically to face off in the final battle against Ganondorf, battling Mucktorok once more to prevent it from interfering in Link and Ganondorf's duel.

After the defeat of Ganondorf, Sidon joins the other sages in visiting the Great Sky Island with Mineru. As Mineru begins to fade away, Sidon joins the other sages in expressing their commitment to Princess Zelda and the future peace of Hyrule. Though they stumble over their rehearsed speech, their vow is enough to assure Mineru that Hyrule is in good hands.

As the Sage of Water, Sidon can form water into shapes or damaging blasts. Link can use Sidon's abilities to create a protective shield around himself that he can then launch at enemies by swinging his weapon, with the shape of the blast changing depending on the weapon and type of attack used.

Riju
Riju is the young chief of the Gerudo, the descendant of the Champion Urbosa and the original Sage of Lightning. Riju ascended to the throne at a very young age after her mother's sudden death, quickly showing her levelheaded leadership abilities as she supported Link in the original battle against Calamity Ganon. In the years since, she has developed control over lightning similar to that of her ancestors, but still lacks the skills necessary to properly aim it and use it in combat. After the Upheaval, a shroud of sand settled over Gerudo Town and mysterious, nigh-invulnerable monsters dubbed Gibdos began attacking; Riju has dedicated herself to honing her lightning abilities in hopes of using them to defeat the monsters, but is unable to master them until Link comes to support her, guiding her strikes with arrows. Riju and Link lead the Gerudo soldiers in combat against the Gibdos, which prove weak to Riju's lightning, and eventually uncover the Lightning Temple, where the Gibdo Queen has made her nest.

With the Gibdo Queen's defeat, the sand shroud disappears and the Gibdos become much less common throughout the desert. Riju sees the Sage of Lightning's Secret Stone and touches it, seeing a vision of her ancestor, who tells Riju the history of the sages and how Riju is destined to fight alongside Link as the new Sage of Lightning. Riju is excited by the challenge of fulfilling a centuries-long destiny and participating in a high-stakes battle, and so gladly accepts the task. The Secret Stone binds itself to her as an earring, which grants her the ability to create a spiritual representation of herself that she binds to Link, allowing Link to make use of her abilities while she remains in Gerudo Town. Riju later rejoins Link physically to face off in the final battle against Ganondorf, battling the Gibdo Queen once more to prevent her from interfering in Link and Ganondorf's duel.

After the defeat of Ganondorf, Riju joins the other sages in visiting the Great Sky Island with Mineru. As Mineru begins to fade away, Riju joins the other sages in expressing their commitment to Princess Zelda and the future peace of Hyrule, and brings the sages back together when they stumble over their rehearsed speech. Despite the hiccups, their vow is enough to assure Mineru that Hyrule is in good hands.

As the Sage of Lightning, Riju is able to summon lightning, though she can only aim it with Link's support. When activated, she creates a field of lightning around herself that slowly expands the longer Link waits, extending her range, and will strike any spot within the field that Link hits with an arrow.
